“Glory To The Lamb,” Geoffrey Golden

“THE SUFFERING AND THE GLORY OF THE SERVANT,” Isaiah 52:13) BEHOLD, MY SERVANT SHALL DEAL PRUDENTLY, HE SHALL BE EXALTED AND EXTOLLED, AND BE VERY HIGH.  14) AS MANY WERE ASTONIED AT THEE; HIS VISAGE WAS SO MARRED MORE THAN ANY MAN, AND HIS FORM MORE THAN THE SONS OF MEN:  15) SO SHALL HE SPRINKLE MANY NATIONS; THE KINGS SHALL SHUT THEIR MOUTHS AT HIM:  FOR THAT WHICH HAD NOT BEEN TOLD THEM SHALL THEY SEE; AND THAT WHICH THEY HAD NOT HEARD SHALL THEY CONSIDER.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v13,  Exalted and Extolled And Be Very High may refer to three successive events, Describing The Servant’s Resurrection, Ascension And Glorification.  v14, So His Visage Was Marred … More Than The Sons Of Men:  He Would Be So Disfigured That He Would No Longer Look Human.  v15, The nations are represented by their kings.  Shut their mouths is a token of stunned respect.  For what had not been told … they shall consider:  Romans 15:21  refers to this passage.

Quest Study Bible – v13, “Servant,”  See article:  “Who Was The Servant?”  (42:1).  v14, “How Did God’s Servant Become So Disfigured?”  It would make sense that the violence described in 50:6 caused this.  If The Servant is Israel, this disfigurement could be understood as the displacement, scattering and captivity of the nation.  It would be amazing that Israel, after being ravaged by the Assyrians and Babylonians, would still exist—especially back in their homeland.  Christians, of course, see that This Also Refers To The Crucifixion Of Jesus.  v15, “What does it mean to sprinkle nations?”   In The Old Testament Rituals, people and items were sometimes ceremonially cleansed by sprinkling with blood or oil (Leviticus 4:6; 8:11).  Thus this sprinkling would somehow make the nations—that is, Gentiles—Righteous.  This was always part of Israel’s Mission (Genesis 12;3) And It Was Perfectly Fulfilled In Jesus Christ (Luke 2:30-32; Ephesians 2:13).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v13-15, Here Begins That Wonderful, Minute, And Faithful Description Of The Office, Character, And Glory Of The Messiah, Which Has Struck Conviction To Many Of The Most Hardened Unbelievers.  Christ Is Wisdom Itself; In The Work Of Our Redemption There Appeared The Wisdom Of God In A Mystery.  Those That Saw Him, Said, Surely Never Man Looked So Miserable:  Never Was Sorrow Like Unto His Sorrow.  But God Highly Exalted Him.  That Shall Be Discovered By The Gospel Of Christ.  AND CHRIST HAVING ONCE SHED HIS BLOOD FOR SINNERS, ITS POWER STILL CONTINUES.  May All Opposers See The Wisdom Of Ceasing From Their Opposition, And Be Made Partakers Of The (Sprinkling Of The) Blood, And The Baptism Of The Holy Ghost; Obeying Him, And Praising His Salvation.  Amen.
