“Woes and Judgments,” lll, Isaiah 5:24) Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust:  because they have Cast Away The Law Of The Lord Of Hosts, and Despised The Word Of The Holy One of Israel.  2 kings 17:14.  25) Therefore Is The Anger Of The Lord kindled against His people, and He Hath Stretched Forth His Hand Against Them, and Hath Smitten them:  and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets.  For all this His Anger Is Not Turned Away, But His Hand Is Stretched Out Still.  26) And He Will Lift An Ensign (Banner) to the nations from far; and will Hiss unto them from the end of the earth:  and, Behold, they shall come with speed swiftly:  27) None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:  28) Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:  29) Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions, yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.  30) And in That Day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea:  and if one look unto the land, Behold darkness and sorrow, and the Light is darkened in the Heavens thereof.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v24, As the vineyard yielding only sour grapes is finally Judged, so the wicked will finally be cutoff without hope.  v25, The hills that seemed permanent trembled, even as the sea “fled” Before The Anger Of The Lord.  The Lord’s Anger Is Not Turned Away even after The Horrible Judgments of vv. 24, 25.  His Hand Is Stretched Out To Punish His People.  v26, The Assyrian army literally “trampled down” (v. 5) the pleasant land of Israel.  Whistle (Hiss):  The Lord Would Control This Army Of Judgment, For He Would Give Their Signal To Invade (see 7:18).  v27-29, The preparations of the Assyrian army were complete; the soldiers were thoroughly ready for war (see 40:30, 31).  v30, The Clouds Symbolize Judgment.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v24-30, Let not any expect to live easily who live wickedly.  Sin weakens the strength, the root of a people; it defaces the beauty, the blossoms of a people.  When God’s Word Is Despised, His Law Cast Away, what can men expect but that God Should Utterly Abandon Them?  When God Comes Forth In Wrath, the hills tremble, fear seizes even great men.  When God Designs The Ruin Of A Provoking People, He Can Find Instruments To Be Employed In It, As He Sent For The Chaldeans (Assyrians), and afterwards The Romans, To Destroy The Jews.  Those who would not Hear The Voice Of God Speaking By His Prophets, shall hear the voice of their enemies roaring against them.  Let the distressed look which way they will, all appears dismal.  If God Frowns Upon Us, how can any creature smile?  Let Us Diligently Seek The Well-Grounded Assurance, that when all earthly helps and comforts shall fail, God Himself Will Be The Strength Of Our Hearts, And Our Portion For Ever.  Amen.

“Woes and Judgments,” cont’d, Isaiah 5:15) And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:  16) But The Lord Of Hosts Shall Be Exalted In Judgment, And God That Is Holy Shall Be Sanctified In Righteousness.  17) Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.  18) Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:  19) That say, let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it, And Let The Counsel Of The Holy One of Israel Draw Nigh And Come, that we may know it!  Jeremiah 17:5; 2 Peter 3:3.  20) Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  21) Woe unto them that are Wise in their own eyes, and Prudent in their own sight!  22) Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:  23) Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away The Righteousness of The Righteous from him (the innocent)!

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v15, 16, the eyes of the lofty:  Proud people get little respect from God (Psalm 147:6).  v17, What were formerly mansions surrounded with lush vineyards would become waste places, where lambs and fat ones, those prepared for sacrifice, feed.  v18, 19, Those who mocked Isaiah’s Proclamation of The Day Of The Lord were not simply “falling,” into sin; rather, they labored to draw iniquity along, as on a cart.  v20, call evil good:  Those who pervert God’s Evaluation Of What Is Good by calling evil good is heading down a Path To Judgment.  v21, At the root of the moral, social, and theological corruption denounced in This Prophecy is being wise in one’s own eyes—an insensitive, arrogant egotism.  v22, mighty at drinking wine:  The intoxicating drink was probably beer (and wine).  v23, bribe:  The perversion of Justice By Bribery is a serious evil that undermines society.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-23, Here is a Woe to those who set their hearts on the wealth of the world.  Not that it is sinful for those who have a house and a field to purchase another; but the fault is that they never know when they have enough.  Covetousness is idolatry; and while many envy the prosperous, wretched man, The Lord Denounces Awful Woes Upon Him.  How applicable to many among us!  God Has Many Ways To Empty The Most Populace Cities.  Those who set their hearts upon the world, Will Justly Be Disappointed.  Here is Woe to those who dote upon the pleasures and the delights of sense (sensations).  The use of music is lawful; but when it draws away the heart from God, then it becomes a sin to us.  God’s Judgments have seized them, but they will not disturb themselves in their pleasures. The Judgments Are Declared.  Let a man be ever so high, death will bring him low; ever so mean, death will bring him lower.  The Fruit Of These Judgments, Shall Be, That God Will Be Glorified As A God Of Power.  Also, As A God That Is Holy; He Shall Be Owned And Declared To Be So, In The Righteous Punishment of proud men.  Those are in a woeful condition that set up sin, and who exert themselves to gratify their base lusts.  It is in scorn that they call God The Holy One of Israel.  They confound and overthrow distinctions between good and evil.  They prefer their own reasoning’s to Divine Revelations; their own devices To The Councils and Commands Of God.  They deem it prudent and politic to continue profitable sins, and to neglect self-denying duties.  Also, how light men make of drunkenness, It Is A Sin Which Lays Open To The Wrath And Curse Of God.  Their judges perverted Justice.  Every sin needs some other to conceal it.

“Woes and Judgments,” Isaiah 5:8) Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!  Micah 2:2.  9) In Mine Ears Said The Lord Of Hosts, Of a Truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.  10) Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an ephah.  11) Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink, that continue until night, till wine inflame them!  Proverbs 23:29, 30.  12) And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts:  but they Regard Not The Work Of The Lord, Neither Consider The Operation Of His Hands.  Amos 6:5.  13) Therefore My people are gone into captivity, because they have no Knowledge:  and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.  Hosea 4:6; Romans 1:28.  14) Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure:  and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v8, Till … land:  The greedy land barons aimed to control all the choice land of Israel.  God Gave The Fields, which “Should Not Be Sold Permanently, For The Land Is Mine” (Leviticus 25:23) as a patrimony (inherited from the father) to all His people (Numbers 27:7-11).  Deprived of these ancestral lands, Israel’s citizens had become day laborers or slaves on what had formerly been their family inheritance.  v9, 10, While invaders could destroy the houses, Only God Could Bring The Drought.  Yet Both Were Judgments From His Hand.  One bath is about six gallons.  A homer is about six bushels.  One ephah is one-tenth of an homer.  The produce of the land would be meager In The Time Of Divine Judgment.  v11, This verse is a strong condemnation of the abuse of intoxicating drink (beer) and wine (v.22).   v12, The harp and the strings:  Music was played in ancient Israel both in The Worship Of The Lord and in times of feasting.  Here their feasts mean “their drinking parties.”  do not regard … consider:  The people were oblivious to the reality of The Work Of The Lord in their midst.  v13 have gone into captivity:  Although the verb is in the past tense, here it refers to future captivity.  Knowledge refers to a personal involvement with someone or something.  thirst:  The Judgment matches the crime of indulging in alcoholic beverages.  v14, Sheol is the word for “grave,” which is compared to a gaping jaw that devours the elite rich and the common masses alike.

“The Song of the Vineyard,” Isaiah 5:1) Now Will I Sing To My Wellbeloved a song of My beloved touching his vineyard, My Wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:  Psalm 80:8.  2) And He Fenced it, And Gathered Out The Stones Thereof, and Planted it With The Choicest Vine,  and Built A Tower In The Midst of it, and Also Made A Winepress  Therein:  and He Looked That it Should Bring Forth Grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.  3) And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, Judge, I pray you, Betwixt Me and My vineyard.  Romans 3:4.  4) What could have been done more to My vineyard, that I Have Not Done In it?  wherefore, When I Looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?  5) And now go to; I Will Tell you what I Will Do to My vineyard”  I Will Take Away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:  6) And I Will lay it waste:  it shall not be pruned, nor digged;  but there shall come up briers and thorns:  I Will Also Command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.  7) For the vineyard of The Lord Of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah His pleasant plant:  and He Looked For Judgment, but Behold Oppression; for Righteousness, but Behold a cry.

Quest Study Bible – “Why the sudden shift to a love song?” v1, Isaiah was moving from a hope of a future time (4:2-6) to the painful reality of the moment.  In this poetic shift, The Emotions Of God—Especially His Feelings of Pain And Longing—are dramatically highlighted.  Also see “Why the dramatic change of tone?” (2:6).

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1-3, Judah is like a vineyard that has every advantage.  Its failure to produce Justifies God’s Judgment (1:2, 3).  Well-Beloved … My beloved: Isaiah speaks Of The Lord in Endearing Terms.  The term wild grapes means “stinking things” (v. 4).  My vineyard:  The pronoun indicates God’s Love And Pride Over His Possession—the nation of Israel.  v4, What more could have been done:  When it comes to the failed relationship between God and His people, the blame falls solely on the people.  The Lord Did Everything He Could–From Instructing His People to giving them The Promised Land.  v5, Please Let Me Tell you may be translated more forcefully as “Now I Will tell you.”  God Was Warning His people.  v6, Briers and thorns symbolize the anarchy that will overtake the land during the Exile.  clouds:  God Would Command the clouds to withhold the rain because the people were rebellious.  v7, Justice … Oppression:  These words have similar sounds in Hebrew.  Choosing similar sounding words is a technique of Hebrew poetry.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – Christ Is God’s Beloved Son, And Our Beloved Saviour.  The Care Of The Lord Over The Church of Israel, is described as The Management of a Vineyard.  The advantages of our situation will be brought into the account of Another Day.  He Planted It With The Choicest Vines, Gave Them A Most Excellent law, and Instituted Proper Ordinances.  The Temple Was A Tower, Where God Gave Tokens Of His Presence.  He Set Up His Altar, To Which The Sacrifices Should Be Brought, All The Means Of Grace Are Denoted (Indicated) Thereby.  God Expects Fruit from those that Enjoy Privileges.  Good Purposes, and Good Beginnings Are Great Things, But Not Enough; There Must Be Fruit; Thoughts and Affections, Words and Actions, Agreeable To The Spirit.  It (The Vineyard) brought forth bad fruit.  Wild grapes, are the fruits of the corrupt nature.  Where Grace Does Not Work, corruption will.  But the wickedness of those that profess religion, and enjoy the means of Grace, must be upon the sinners themselves.  They shall no longer be a peculiar people.  When errors and vice go without check or control, the vineyard is unpruned; then it will soon be grown over with thorns.  This is often shown in The Departure Of God’s Spirit from those who have long Strove Against Him, and The Removal Of His Gospel from places which have long been a Reproach to It (The Gospel).  The Explanation Is Given.  It is sad with a soul, when, Instead of The Grapes of Humility, Meekness, Love, Patience, and Contempt Of The World, For Which God Looks, there are the wild grapes of pride, passion, discontent, and malice, and contempt Of God; Instead Of The Grapes Of Praying and Praising, the wild grapes of cursing and swearing.  Let Us Bring Forth Fruit With Patience; That In The End We May Obtain Everlasting Life.  Amen.

“The Branch Of The Lord,” Isaiah 4:2) In That Day Shall The Branch Of The Lord Be Beautiful And Glorious, and The Fruit Of The Earth shall be Excellent and Comely for them that are escaped of Israel.  Jeremiah 23:5.  3) And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called Holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem:  4) When The Lord Shall Have Washed Away The Filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by The Spirit Of Judgment, and by The Spirit Of Burning.  5) And The Lord Will Create upon every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and upon Her assemblies, a Cloud and Smoke by day, and the Shining of a Flaming Fire by night:  for upon all The Glory shall be a Defence.  6) And there shall be a Tabernacle for a Shadow in the daytime, from the heat, and for a place of Refuge, and for a Covert (Hiding Place) from storm and from rain.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – In That Day:  Speaks Of The Future Revelation Of The Glory Of The Lord On The Earth (2:2-4).  The Branch Of The Lord.  Christ, Will Be Glorified, so the earth will be released from its curse, producing All That God Intended it to produce in The Beginning (Psalm 65).  v3, recorded:  The record of births in Jerusalem (Psalm 87:5, 6) may be related to The “Heavenly Book” (Exodus 32:32; Psalm 69:28; Daniel 7:10; Revelation 20:12).  v4, The Spirit Of Judgment … Burning means “A Fiery Judgment.”  Through the process of a Purging Fire, which outwardly Consumes the Faithless, and inwardly Purifies the Faithful, God Will Produce A Holy City.  v5, Cloud and Smoke:  God’s Protective Covering over the Restored and Sanctified Mount Zion.  v6, Over the Cloud and Smoke on each dwelling will be The Tabernacle, Manifesting Gods Protection Of His People (Psalm 91:1, Revelation 21:3).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v2-6, Not only the setting forth of Christ’s Kingdom in the times of the Apostles, but Its Enlargement by gathering the dispersed Jews into The Church is foretold.  Christ Is Called The Branch Of The Lord, Being Planted By His Power, And Flourishing To His Praise.  The Gospel Is The Fruit Of The Branch Of The Lord; All The Graces And Comforts Of The Gospel Spring From Christ.  It Is Called The Fruit Of The Earth, because It Sprang Up in this world, And Was Suited For The Present State.  It will be good evidence that we are distinguished from those merely called Israel, if we are brought to see All Beauty In Christ, And Holiness.  As a Type Of This Blessed Day, Jerusalem should again flourish as a Branch, and Be Blessed with The Fruits Of The Earth.  God Will Keep For Himself A Holy Seed.  When most of those that have a place and a name in Zion, and in Jerusalem, shall be cut off by their unbelief, some shall be left.  Those only that are Holy shall be left, When The Son of Man Shall Gather Out Of His Kingdom Every Thing Which Offends.  By The Judgment Of God’s Providence, sinners were destroyed and consumed; But By The Spirit Of Grace they are Conformed and Converted.  The Spirit Herein Acts As The Spirit Of Judgment, Enlightening the mind, Convincing the conscience, also as A Spirit Of Burning, Quickening and Strengthening the affections, and making men Zealously Affected (Influenced and or Touched) In A Good Work.  An Ardent Love To Christ and souls, and Zeal Against Sin, will carry men on with resolution in endeavors to turn away ungodliness from Jacob (The father of Israel, representing all twelve tribes).  Every affliction serves a Believer as a furnace to purify them from dross (scum); and (Give) the Convincing, Enlightening, and Powerful Influences Of The Holy Spirit, (and) gradually root out their lusts, and render them Holy As He Is Holy.  God Will Protect His Church, And All That Belong To It; and those that have it Are Kept By The Power Of God.  But only those that are weary will seek rest; only those who are convinced that a storm is approaching, will look for shelter.  Affected (Influenced and or Touched) with a deep sense of the Divine Displeasure, to which we are exposed by sin, let us at once have recourse to (go to) Christ Jesus, and Thankfully Accept The Refuge He Affords (Provides).

“Judgment On Jerusalem And Judah,” IV, Isaiah 4:1) And in That Day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel:  only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

Quest Study Bible – “Was being single a disgrace?” v1, Most likely the seven women were widows, there husbands having been killed in the war.  In ancient times widows were treated poorly and were exposed to oppression.  However, because these widows claimed to have their own financial resources, there disgrace probably stemmed from being childless.  In Hebrew culture there was no greater humiliation than to be a woman with no children of her own.  These women apparently wanted children to remove their disgrace.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, in That Day:  This phrase connects with the preceding unit (3:16-26).  The women of Jerusalem would have to beg a man to father their children and take away their reproach—the fact that they have no children.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1, The First Verse belongs to the the third chapter.  When the troubles should come upon the land, as the unmarried state was deemed reproachful among the Jews, these women would act contrary to common usage, and seek husbands for themselves.

“Judgment On Jerusalem And Judah,” lll, Isaiah 3:16) Moreover The Lord Saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:  17) Therefore The Lord Will Smite With A Scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, And The Lord Will Discover their secret parts.  18) In That Day The Lord Will Take Away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls (head covering), and their round tires (necklaces) like the moon,  19) The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,  20) The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets (charms), and the earrings,  21) The rings, and nose jewels,  22) The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples (headdress), and the crisping pins (ornament),  23) The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the veils.  24) And it shall come to pass, that instead of a sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent (tear, or rip); and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girdling of sackcloth; and burning (branding) instead of beauty.  25) Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.  26) And her (Zion’s) gates shall lament and mourn, and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

Quest Study Bible – “Of what, exactly, were the women guilty?”  v16-23.  Some think that the term personifies a class of people–Jerusalem’s self-indulgent rich–who cared little for anything but their comfort.  Others believe that Isaiah spoke to a literal upper class of women.  Either way, Isaiah’s descriptions—outstretched necks, flirting eyes—were symptoms of their self-centered lives and inward moral decay.   “How would they be punished?”  v24-26, The stench, rope, baldness and branding described the treatment given to a people defeated in war and forced into foreign captivity.  Reports of the squalor and hardships of modern war refugees offer some analogies (comparison).

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary –  v16, The plural daughters of Zion suggests the women of the city as well as a personification of Jerusalem (see 1:8).  The prophet shows his scorn for pretense and flagrant display.  v17, The term secret parts and its parallel head may mean “forehead.”  v18-26, Rope … baldness … sackcloth refer to the conditions of the people going into exile.  Your men refers to the men of Jerusalem.  The gates of Zion mourn because its inhabitants have gone into exile for their sins.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary –  v16-26, The Prophet reproves and warns the daughters of Zion of the sufferings coming upon them.  Let them know that God Notices the folly and vanity of proud women, even of their dress.  The punishments threatened answered the sin.  Loathsome diseases often are The Just Punishment of pride.  It is not material to ask what sort of ornaments they wore; many of these things, if they had not been in fashion, would have been ridiculed then as now.  Their fashions differed much from those of our times, but human nature is the same.  Wasting time and money to the neglect of Piety (The Quality of being Religious or Reverent), Charity and even of Justice, Displeases The Lord.  Many professors of the present day, seem to think there is no harm in worldly finery; but were it not a Great Evil, Would The Holy Spirit Have Taught the people to expose it so fully?  The Jews being overcome, Jerusalem would be leveled with the ground; which is represented under the idea of a desolate female seated upon the earth.  And when the Romans had destroyed Jerusalem, they struck a medal, on which was represented a woman sitting on the ground in a posture of grief.  If sin be harbored within the walls, lamentation and mourning are near the gates.

“Judgment On Jerusalem And Judah,” cont’d, Isaiah 3:10) Say ye to the Righteous, that it shall be well with him:  for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.  11) Woe unto the wicked!  It shall be ill with him:  for the reward of his hands shall be given him.  12) As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them.  O My people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.  13) The Lord Standeth Up To Plead, And Standeth To Judge The People.  14) The Lord Will Enter Into Judgment with the ancients of His people, and the princes thereof:  for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.  15) What mean ye that ye beat My people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor?  Saith The Lord God Of Hosts.

Quest Study Bible – “What was meant by child rulers?”  v4, 12, The thought of children or women ruling over them was unthinkable; it was an indication that their Jewish society would be in chaos and upheaval.  In a culture where men dominated the power structures, anything less would be sign of a devastated, ruined country.  Isaiah’s prediction may have also pointed to the future carnage of war:  if most of the men would be killed in battle, only children and women would be left to rule.  “Why would a cloak make someone a leader?”

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, 11, eat the fruit:  Compare this idea with 1:19.  v12, The Lamenting Words My people (see v. 15) are reminiscent of David’s pain over his erring son Absalom (2 Samuel 18:33).  v13, to plead:  This is a judicial term, meaning to plead a case (Micah 6:1).  v14, The vineyard represents the nation (5:1-7), used here as a term parallel to the poor.  The leaders had taken advantage of the weak in order to plunder them (v.15).  v15, Lord God Of Hosts:  See the similar usage in 1:9.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v10-15, The rule was certain; it would be well with the Righteous and ill with the wicked.  Blessed Be God, there is Abundant Encouragement to the Righteous to Trust In Him, and for sinners to Repent and Return to Him.  It was time for The Lord To Show His Might.  He Will Call men to a strict account for all the wealth and power entrusted to and abused by them.  If it is sinful to disregard the necessities of the poor, how odious and wicked a part do they act, who bring men into poverty, And Then Oppress Them!

“Judgment On Jerusalem And Judah,” Isaiah 3:1) For, Behold, The Lord, The Lord Of Hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay (supply) and the staff (support), the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,  Leviticus 26:26; Ezekiel 14:13.  2) The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,  3) The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer (craftsman), and the eloquent orator.  4) And I Will Give Children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.  Ecclesiastes 10:16.  5) And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour:  the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base (the lowest) against the honourable.  6) When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand.  7) In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing:  make me not a ruler of the people.  8) For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen:  because their tongue and their doings are against The Lord, To Provoke The Eyes Of His Glory.  9) The shew of their countenance (look on their face) doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not.  Woe unto their soul!  for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

Quest Study Bible – “What was Isaiah Predicting?”  v1, Some think Isaiah was referring to the series of Assyrian invasions culminating in the sacking of The Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 B. C.  Others point to the Babylonian’s attack on Jerusalem and subsequent exile of The Southern Kingdom of Judah in 586 B. C.  “What was meant by child rulers?”  v4, 12, The thought of children or women ruling over them was unthinkable; it was an indication that their Jewish society would be in chaos and upheaval.  In a culture where men dominated the power structures, anything less would be sign of a devastated, ruined country.  Isaiah’s prediction may have also pointed to the future carnage of war:  if most of the men would be killed in battle, only children and women would be left to rule.  “Why would a cloak make someone a leader?”  v6, This graphic image underscored the devastation Isaiah Predicted for Israel.  He claimed that the nation would become so impoverished that anyone left with even a stitch of clothing would be considered privileged and thus a candidate for leadership.  “Of what, exactly, were the women guilty?”

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, God takes away Judah’s leaders through the sword and exile.  v2, 3, Judah’s administration was organized around warriors—mighty man, man of war, captain of fifty; sages—judge, elder, honorable man, counselor; religious mediums–prophet, diviner, enchanter; and craftsmen—artisan.  v4, Because of The Lord’s Judgment on Judah, the shrewd, ungodly leaders would be replaced by children and babes, meaning inexperienced and incompetent leaders.  v5, For every one to be oppressed by another describes a state of anarchy (disorder).  In such an upside down world, child insults the elder, the base ignores the honorable.  In His Judgment, The Lord has given over the wicked to their own evil ways.  v6, 7, During this period of deprivation, a man would qualify a man would qualify for leadership just by having clothing.  v8, 9, The People’s tongue and look betray their arrogance against God.  Judeans were parading their defiance against God just like the Sodomites.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-9, God was about to deprive Judah of every stay (supply) and support.  The city and the land were to be made desolate, because their words and works had been Rebellious Against The Lord Even At His Holy Temple.  If men do not stay themselves Upon God, He Will Soon Remove All Other Supports, and then they must sink.  Christ Is The Bread Of Life And The Water Of Life; If He Be Our Stay (Supply and Support), we shall find that is A Good Part Not To Be Taken Away, John 6:27.  Here note,  1.  That the condition of sinners is exceedingly woeful.  2. It is the soul that is damaged by sin.  3. Whatever evil befalls sinners, be sure that they bring it on themselves.

“The Day Of The Lord,” cont’d, Isaiah 2:13) And Upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,  14) And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,  15) And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,  16) And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.  17) And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low:  And The Lord Alone Shall Be Exalted In That Day.  18) And the idols He Shall Utterly Abolish.  19) And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, For Fear Of The Lord, And For The Glory Of His Majesty, When He Ariseth To Shake Terribly The Earth.  Revelation 6:16.  20) In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;  21) To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, For Fear Of The Lord, And For The Glory Of His Majesty, When He Ariseth To Shake Terribly The Earth.  22) Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils:  for wherein is he to be accounted of?

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v13-17, The cedars of Lebanon and the high mountains–The Exalted Things Of Creation–as well as the high tower and the fortified wall–the exalted thing made by humanity–will be humbled so that the arrogant Can See The Greatness Of God.  The ships of Tarshish prized objects which the arrogant made and considered to be more important Than God.  v18, The term idols means “worthless things.”  v19 holes … caves:  People will scurry like frightened animals with no place hide (Matthew 24:16).  Terror refers to the wicked At The Sight Of God (Psalm 14:5).  v20-22, Sever yourselves:  Since God Will Reject Proud Idolaters, it follows that The Faithful should also reject them.  How ludicrous to trust in transitory, impermanent man, whose breath is in his nostrils,  Instead Of  In The One Who Gives Everyone Breath.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v12-22, The Day Of The Lord Shall be upon those things in which they put their confidence.  Those who will not be reasoned out of their sins, sooner or later shall be frightened out of them.  Covetous men make money their god; but the time will come when they will feel as much their burden.  This Whole Passage may be applied to the case of an awakened sinner, ready to leave all, that his soul may be saved.  The Jews were prone to rely on their heathen neighbors;  but they are here called upon to cease from depending on mortal man.  We are all prone to the same sin.  Then let not man be your Fear, let (him) not be your Hope; but let your Hope Be In The Lord Your God.  Let Us Make This Our Great Concern.
