“Jerusalem To Be Inhabited,” V, Isaiah 45:20) Assemble yourselves And Come; Draw Near together, ye That Are Escaped Of The Nations:  they Have No Knowledge That Set Up The Wood Of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.  Jeremiah 44:28; Romans 1:22.  21) Tell ye, and bring them near; Yea, let them take counsel together:  Who Hath Declared This From Ancient Time:  Who Hath Told It From That Time?  Have Not I The Lord?  And There Is No God Else Beside Me; A Just God And A Saviour; There Is None Beside Me.  22) Look Unto Me, And Be ye Saved, All The Ends Of The Earth:  For I Am God, And There Is None Else.  23) I Have Sworn By Myself, The Word Is Gone Out Of My Mouth In Righteousness, And Shall Not Return, That Unto Me Every Knee Shall Bow, Every Tongue Shall Swear.  Philippians 2:10; Psalm 63:11.  24) Surely, Shall one say, In The Lord Have I Righteousness And Strength:  Even To Him Shall Men Come; And All That Are Incensed Against Him Shall Be Ashamed.  25) In The Lord Shall All The Seed Of Israel Be Justified, And Shall Glory.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v20, Draw near together:  For similar ideas see 41:1, 21, 22; 43:9; 44:7.  v21, The pronoun This refers to The Universal Salvation begun with Cyrus’s decree that Israel would return home (44:24–45:13).  v22, No Other:  For Additional References To God’s Incomparability  see 40:25; 45:5. v23, I Have Sworn By Myself:  The Certainty Of The Word Of The Lord Is Emphasized Strongly In The Book Of Isaiah (40:8).  The Lord’s Promise That To Me Every Knee Shall Bow Will Be Fulfilled In Jesus Christ (see Philippians 2:10, 11).  v24, 25, Those who are incensed against God will have no share in His Eternal Kingdom (50:11; 66:24).

Quest Study Bible – v23, “Why Would God Swear By Himself?”  First, to emphasize The Total Truth Of What He Says Here.  Second, To Portray The Utter Uniqueness Of God.  In those days, as today, people would swear to God (or say: “By God”) to indicate their Truthfulness.  Who Could God Swear By?  Himself, Of Course, Since There Is No Other (v.22).  See Hebrews 6:14.   v23, SCRIPTURE LINK,   See Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:10-11.  The Bible Foretells The Time When Everyone Will Bow Before God As Judge.   In Romans, Paul quotes this Text to show how we should Avoid Judging Each Other.  In Philippians, he poetically places Jesus In This Picture As The Recipient Of Honor.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v20-25, The Nations Are Exhorted (Strongly Encouraged) To Draw Near To Jehovah.  None Besides Is Able To help; He Is The Saviour, Who Can Save Without The Assistance Of Any.  If The Heart Is Brought Into The Obedience Of Christ, The Knee (Shall Bow) Will Cheerfully Obey His Commands.  To Christ Men Men Shall Come From Every Nation For Blessings; All That hate His Cause Shall Be Put To Shame, And All Believers Shall Rejoice In Him As Their Friend And Portion.  All Most Come To Him:  May We Now Come To Him As The Lord Our Righteousness, Walking According To His Commandments.  Amen.

“Jerusalem To Be Inhabited,” lV, Isaiah 45:11) Thus Saith The Lord, The Holy One Of Israel, And His Maker, Ask Me Of Things To Come Concerning My Sons, And Concerning The Work Of My Hands Command ye Me.  Jeremiah 31:9.  12) I Have Made The Earth, And Created Man Upon It:  I, Even My Hands, Have Stretched Out The Heavens, And All Their Host Have I Commanded.  Jeremiah 27:5.  13) I Have Raised him Up In Righteousness, And I Will Direct All his Ways:  he Shall Build My City, And he Shall Let Go My Captives, Not For Price Nor Reward, Saith The Lord Of Hosts.  14) Thus Saith The Lord, The Labour Of Egypt, And Merchandise Of Ethiopia And Of The Sabeans, men of stature, Shall Come Over Unto thee, And they Shall Be thine:  they Shall Make Supplication Unto thee, saying, Surety God Is In thee; And There Is None Else, There Is No God.  15) Verily Thou Art A God That Hidest Thyself, O God Of Israel, The Saviour.  Romans 11:33, 34.  16) They Shall Be Ashamed, And Also Confounded, All Of them:  they Shall Go To Confusion together That Are Makers of Idols.  17) But Israel Shall Be Saved In The Lord With And Everlasting Salvation:  ye Shall Not Be Ashamed Nor Confounded World Without End.  Hosea 1:7; Romans 11:26.  18) For Thus Saith The Lord That Created The Heavens; God Himself That Formed The Earth And Made It; He Hath Established It, He Created It Not In Vain, He Formed It To Be Inhabited:  I Am The Lord; And There Is None Else.  19) I Have Not Spoken In Secret, In A Dark Place Of The Earth:  I Said Not Unto The Seed Of Jacob, Seek ye Me In Vain:  I The Lord Speak Righteousness, I Declare Things That Are Right.  Nehemiah 9:13.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v11, Thus Says The Lord:  This Statement Points To The Certainty Of These Words.   v12, Created is the same verb used in Genesis 1:26-28 (see 43;1).   v13, The pronoun him refers to Cyrus.  v14, After The Lord Handed Over Egypt, Cush, and the Sabeans to Cyrus as a ransom, they would themselves over to Israel and its Lord.  v15, 16 God Hides Himself In His Wrath, But He Reveals Himself In The Scriptures.  v17 An Everlasting Salvation:  These Words Of Divine Promise Are Echoed In 51:6.  v18, The Lord Created The Earth To Be Inhabited, not to be desolate, as the Assyrians and the Babylonians had left the land of Israel (33:9; 44:26, 28).  v19,  Pagan diviners pronounced their oracles in secret and dark places.  The Lord’s Prophets Proclaimed The Truth Openly To All Who Would Listen.

John Gill’s Expostion Of The Bible – v14 saying, Surely God Is In thee, and There Is None Else, there is no god;  induced thus to come to the Church, and show all this Respect Unto Her, from this Consideration, That God Is In The Midst Of Her, Of A Truth, Her Name Being “Jehovah Shammah”, The Lord Is There (Present); Here He Grants His Presence, Here His Word Is Preached, And Ordinances Administered; And Hither Converts Flock, In Hope Of Enjoying The Same Blessing Also, Being Fully Satisfied There Is No Other God But In Zion, ( Zechariah 8:23 ) ( Ezekiel 48:35 ) . This passage of Scripture is thus explained in the Jewish Chronicles F25: “the labour of Egypt”, that is, Pharaoh king of Egypt: “and the merchandise of Ethiopia”, that is, Tirhakah, king of Ethiopia: “and the Sabeans, men of stature”, these are their armies:

Quest Study Bible – v15, “Why Would God Hide Himself?”  The surrounding Verses speak of other nations, idol-worshipers, Coming To Israel’s God.  From their perspective, Israel’s God Is Different Because He Is Not Made Of Wood Or Stone.  He Is Invisible—Or Hidden From Their Eyes.  God Responds By Saying He Is Not Hiding—He Reveals Himself To His People (vv. 18-19).  Also see article:  “Does God Sometimes Hide From Us?”  (Psalm 10:1).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v11-19, Believers may ask in Prayer for what they need; if for their good, it will not be withheld.  But how common to hear God Called To Account For His Dealings With Man!  Cyrus provided for the returning Jews.  Those Redeemed By Christ Shall Be Provided For.  The Restoration would convince many, and convert some; And All That Truly Join The Lord, Find His Service Perfect Freedom.  Though God Be His People’s God And Saviour, Yet Sometimes He Lays Them Under His Frowns; But Let Them Wait Upon The Lord Who Hides His Face.  There is A World Without End, And It Will Be Well Or Ill With Us, According As It Shall Be With Us In That World.  The Lord We Serve And Trust, Is God Alone.  All That God Has Said Is Plain, Satisfactory, And Just.  As God In His Word Calls Us To Seek Him, So He Never Denied Believing Prayers, Nor Disappointed Believing Expectations.  He Gives Grace Sufficient, And Comfort And Satisfaction Of Soul.  Amen.

“Jerusalem To Be Inhabited,” lll, Isaiah 45:5) I Am The Lord, And There Is None Else, There Is No God Beside Me:  I Girded thee, Though thou Hast Not Known Me.  6) That they May Know From The Rising Of The Sun, And From The West, That There Is None Beside Me.  I Am The Lord, And There Is None Else.  Psalm 102.15; Malachi 1:11.  7) I Form The Light, And Create Darkness:  I Make Peace, And Create Evil:  I The Lord Do All These Things.  Amos 3:6.  8) Drop Down, Ye Heavens, From Above, And Let The Skies Pour Down Righteousness:  Let The Earth Open, And Let Them Bring Forth Salvation, And Let Righteousness Spring Up Together; I The Lord Have Created It.  Psalm 85:11.  9) Woe Unto him That Striveth With his Maker!  Let The Postsherd Strive With The Potsherds Of The Earth.  Shall The Clay Say To him That Fashioneth It, What Makest thou?  or thy work, He hath no hands?  Jeremiah 18:6; Romans 9:20.  10) Woe Unto him that saith unto his father, What begottest thou? Or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v5, 6, From the rising of the sun to its setting means everywhere (Psalm 113:3).   v7, 8, Because Cyrus Was Anointed By The True God, Heaven Would Shower Its Blessings On Earth.  v9, 10, potsherd:  Why should the created being question The Creator?  A piece of pottery doesn’t question the potter.

Quest Study Bible – v7, “Why Would A Loving God Create Disaster?”  The best answer might rest in The Image Of God As A Loving Parent, Who Offers Care But Insists On Obedience.  The specific disaster in the minds of the readers was the captivity of the Jews, which was clearly intended as a lesson for Israel, One That Would Draw Them Into Greater Obedience.  Also see article:  “Why Does God Send Calamity?”  (Lamentations 3:38).  v9, “What should we do with our doubts and complaints?”  The word for quarrel here convey the idea of picking a fight.  There is a rich Biblical tradition of Faithful People expressing their honest disagreements with God.  Abraham, Moses, David, Job, Jeremiah and others all did this.  But their complaints actually served to Bring Them Closer To God, while the quarrels mentioned here are points of division.  We Can Tell God How We Feel Without Picking A Fight And Turning Away From Him.  v9, “Potsherd,”   A broken piece of pottery.  See “How was David like broken pottery?”  (Psalms 31:12).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v5-10, There Is No God Beside Jehovah.  There Is Nothing Done Without Him.  He makes Peace, Put Here For All Good; And Creates Evil, NOT THE EVIL OF SIN, BUT THE EVIL OF PUNISHMENT.  He Is The Author Of All That Is True, Holy, Good, Or Happy, And Evil, Error, And Misery, Came Into The World By His Permission, Through The Willful Apostacy (The Abandonment Of Religion) Of His Creatures, But Are Restrained And Overruled To His Righteous Purpose.  This Doctrine Is Applied, For The Comfort Of Those That Earnestly Longed, Yet Quietly Waited For The Redemption Of Israel.  The Redemption Of Sinners By The Son Of God, And The Pouring Out (Of) The Spirit, To Give Success To The Gospel, Are Chiefly Here Intended.  We Must Not Expect Salvation Without Righteousness; Together The Lord hath Created Them.  Let Not Oppressors Oppose God’s Designs For His People.  Let Not The Poor Oppressed Murmur, As If God Dealt Unkindly With Them.  Men Are But Earthen Pots; They Are Broken Potsherds, And Are Very Much Made So By Mutual Contentions (Conflicts).  To Contend (Fight) With Him Is As Senseless As For Clay To Find Fault With The Potter.  Let Us Turn God’s Promises Into Prayers, Beseeching (Begging) Him That Salvation May Abound Among Us, And Let Us Rest Assured That The Judge Of All The Earth Will Do Right.

“Jerusalem To Be Inhabited, cont’d, Isaiah 45:1) Thus Saith The Lord To His Anointed, To Cyrus, whose Right Hand I Have Holden, To Subdue Nations Before him; And I Will Loose The Loins Of Kings, To Open Before him The Two Leaved Gates; And The Gates Shall Not Be Shut;  2) I Will Go Before thee, And Make The Crooked Places Straight:  I Will Break In Pieces The Gates of Brass, And Cut In Sunder The Bars Of Iron:  3) And I Will Give thee The Treasures Of Darkness, And Hidden Riches Of Secret Places, That thou Mayest Know That I, The Lord Which Call thee by thy name, Am The God Of Israel.  Exodus 33:12.  4) For Jacob My Servant’s Sake, And Israel Mine Elect, I Have Even Called thee By thy name:  I Have Surnamed thee, Though thou hast Not Known Me.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, To be Anointed, literally To Be “Messiah,” indicates appointment to an office, usually as king (61:1).  The bestowal of this Unique and Exalted title on the Persian king, after it had been used in Israel of such notables as the patriarchs (Psalm 105:15), David (Psalm 2:2), And The Coming Messiah (Daniel 9:25), must have shocked Isaiah’s Israelite audience (vv. 9, 10).  v2, I Will Go Before you:  This Was The Lord’s Promise To Cyrus, similar To His Promises To His People Of Old.  Babylon had one hundred gates of bronze.  v3, 4, have not known Me:  Cyrus Knew That The Lord Had Appointed him, but he did know The Lord God personally (see Ezra 1:2).  Who call you by your name refers to the specific naming of Cyrus By The Lord before Cyrus became king (compare 43:1).  God Anointed Cyrus To Establish Again The People Whom He Loved (43:1).

Quest Study Bible – v1, “How was Cyrus Anointed?”   Cyrus’s Anointing was figurative, to be sure, But God Was Empowering him For The Task Of The Returning Of The Jews To Their Homeland.  The Word Messiah Means Anointed–Because God Would Specially Prepare That Special One To Redeem His People—but Cyrus was not The Messiah.  He was just a leader Prepared By God For A Unique Task.  v3, “Treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places,”   As Cyrus conquered nations, building his empire, he took possession of great wealth.  Ancient writers commented on the legendary wealth of Lydia, which Cyrus conquered in 546 B. C.  God Was Both Equipping And Rewarding Cyrus For The Great Deed Of Freeing Israel.  (This may, however, be an illusion to the treasures that the Babylonians stole from the Jerusalem Temple, which Cyrus found and then returned to the Jews; Ezra 5:14-15.)

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-4, Cyrus is called God’s Anointed; he was designed and qualified for his great service by The Counsel Of God.  The gates of Babylon which led to the river, were left open the night that Cyrus marched his army into the empty channel.  The Lord Went Before him, Giving Entrance To The Cities he besieged.  He Gave him also treasures, which had been hidden in secret places.  The True God Was To Cyrus and Unknown God; Yet God Foreknew him; He Called him by his name.  The exact Fulfillment of This must have shown Cyrus That Jehovah Was The Only True God, And That it Was For The Sake Of Israel that he was prospered.  In all the changes of states and kingdoms, God Works Out The Good Of His Church.

“Jerusalem To Be Inhabited,” Isaiah 44:24) Thus Saith The Lord, Thy Redeemer, And he That Formed Thee From The Womb, I Am The Lord That maketh All Things; Tht Stretcheth Forth The heavens Alone:  That Spreadeth Abroad The Earth By Myself;  Job 9:8; Psalm 104:2.  25) That Frustrateth The Tokens Of The Liars, And Maketh Diviners Mad; That Turneth Wise Men Backward, And Maketh Their Knowledge Foolish;  1 Corinthians 1:20.  26) That Confirmeth The Word Of His Servant, And Performeth The Counsel of His Messengers; That Saith To Jerusalem, Thou Shalt Be Inhabited; And To The Cities Of Judah, Ye Shall Be Built, And I Will Raise Up The Decayed Places Thereof:  27) That Sayeth To The Deep, Be Dry, And I Will Dry Up Thy Rivers:  28) That Saith Of Cyrus, He Is My Shepherd, And Shall perform All my Pleasure:  Even Saying To Jerusalem, Thou Shalt Be Built; And To The Temple, Thy Foundation Shall Be Laid.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v24, Thus Says The Lord:  Because The Lord Says This, It Will Come To Pass (43:1; 14; 44:2, 6, 24).  v25, Babblers refers to the diviners.  wise, people wise in their own eyes, but not wise to The Lord.  v26, built:  The rebuilding of The Temple and the resettlement of the land after the devastation of Babylon inaugurated the new age (58:12; 61:4).  v27, Deep refers either to the moat protecting Babylon or to the obstacles blocking the returning exiles (42:15)v28, Cyrus:  Isaiah mentions by name the king of Persia who would allow the Israelites to return to Jerusalem in 538 B. C.

Quest Study Bible – v28, “Cyrus,”   Cyrus ll (the great) ruled Persia from 558 to 530 B.C.  Whereas previous empires had dominated the Middle East with military might, Cyrus combined might with diplomacy by allowing various captured nations to return home and by setting up a decentralized government.  God Used This Leader’s Rise To Power To Save His People (Ezra 1:2-4) And Spark The Rebuilding Of The Temple.  See “One from the east” (41:2).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v24-28, Those That Learn To Know Christ, See All Knowledge To Be Foolishness, In Comparison With The Knowledge Of Him.  And His Enemies Will Find Their Counsels Turned Into Foolishness, And Themselves Taken In Their Craftiness.  The Exact Fulfilling (Of) The Prophecies Of Scripture Confirms The Truth of The Whole, And Proves Its Divine Origin.  The Particular Favors God Designed For His people In Captivity, Were Foretold Here, Long Before They Went Into Captivity.  Very Great Difficulties Would Be In The Way Of Their Deliverance, But It Is Promised That By Divine Power They Should All Be Removed.  God Knew Who Should Be The Deliverer Of His People; And Let His Church Know It, That When They Heard Such A Name Talked Of They Might Know Their Redemption Drew Nigh.  It Is The Greatest Honor Of The Greatest Men, To Be Employed As Instruments Of The Divine Favor To His People.  In Things Wherein Men Serve Themselves, And Look No Further, God makes Them Do All His Pleasure (Will).  And A Nobler Shepherd Than Cyrus, (Jesus The Christ), Does His Father’s Will, Till His (God’s) Work Is Fully Completed.  Amen.

“The Lord, Not Idols,” cont’d, Isaiah 44:15) Then Shall It Be For A Man To Burn:  For he Will Take Thereof, And Warm himself; Yea, he Kindleth It, And Baketh Bread; Yea, he Maketh A god, And Worshippeth It; he Maketh It A Graven Image, And Falleth Down Thereto.  16) He Burneth Part Thereof In The Fire; With Part Thereof he Eateth Flesh; he Roasteth Roast, And Is Satisfied:  Yea, he Warmeth himself, And Saith, Aha, I Am Warm, I Have Seen The Fire:  17) And The Residue Thereof he Maketh A god, Even his graven image:  he Falleth Down Unto it, And Worshippeth it, And Prayeth Unto it, And Saith, Deliver me, for thou art my god.  18) They Have Not Known Nor Understood:  For he Hath Shut his Eyes, That They Cannot See, And their Hearts, that they Cannot Understand.  Psalm 81:12.  19) And None Considereth In his heart, Neither Is There Knowledge Nor Understanding To Say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it:  and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination?  shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?  20) He feedeth on ashes:  a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?  Hosea 4:12; Romans 1:21.  21) Remember These, O Jacob and Israel; for thou Art My servant:  I Have Formed thee; thou art My servant:  O Israel, thou Shalt Not Be Forgotten Of me.  22) I have Blotted Out, As A Thick Cloud, thy Transgressions, And, As A Cloud, thy sins:  Return Unto Me; For I Have Redeemed Thee.  Colossians 1:14; 1 Peter 1:18, 19.  23) Sing, O Ye Heavens; For The Lord Hath Done It:  Shout, Ye Lower Parts Of The Earth:  Break Forth Into Singing, Ye Mountains, O Forest, And Every Tree Therein:  For The Lord Hath Redeemed Jacob, And Glorified Himself In Israel.  Psalm 69:34; Revelation 18:20.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v15, 16 Isaiah was struck by the absurdity of using one part of a log for burning and the outer part as an object of Worship.  v17, 18  you are my god:  This is a  scene of complete hopelessness.  Worshiping and depending on any object made by human hands–such as money–is just as hopeless.  v19, a block of wood:  The awful truth was that people were worshiping objects made from God’s Creation instead of The Creator Himself.  v20, He feeds on ashes:  Compare the two banquets in Proverbs 9:1-6, 13-18.  v21:  not be forgotten:  Although the exiles might have thought That God Had Forgotten them (49:14, 15), The Lord Declared That He Would Remember The Nation He Created.  v22, blotted out:  The idea of Total Forgiveness Of Sins is also found in 40:2; 43:25.  v23, The songs (12:1-6) of the Heavens and earth (1:2; 49:13) the forest (35:1, 2) and every tree (14:7, 8; 55:12) Mirror The Joy Of God’s People at The Arrival Of Salvation.

Quest Study Bible – v16-17, “Why was Isaiah sarcastic?”  To modern minds, it might seem improper to mock other religions, but this was common practice in the ancient world.  God Regularly Showed His People That Idol-Worship Made No Sense, since those gods had no real power.  Often He Used Humor To Do This (see 1 Kings 18:27; Psalm 115:4-8).  v23, “How can mountains sing?”  See “Why describe inanimate objects as Rejoicing?”  (Psalm 96:11-13).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v9-20, Image-making is described to expose the folly of idolaters.  Though A man had used part of a log for fuel, he would fall down before an image made of the remainder, praying it to deliver him.  Man greatly dishonors God, when he represents Him after the image of man.  Satan binds the eyes of unbelievers, causing absurd reasoning’s in matters of Religion.  Whenever men seek happiness in worldly things, or run into unbelief, superstition, or any false system, they feed on ashes.  A heart deceived by pride, love of sin, and departure from God, turns men aside from His Holy Truth And Worship.  When the affections are depraved, a man holds fast the lie as his best treasure.  Are our hearts set upon the wealth of the world and its pleasures?  They will certainly prove a lie.  If we trust to outward professions and doings, as if those would save us, we deceive ourselves.  Self-suspicion is the first step towards self-deliverance.  He that would deliver his soul, must question his conscience.  Is there not a lie in my right hand?  Return Unto Me.  v21 – 23, It Is The Great Concern Of Those Who Have Backslidden From God, like the Jews of old to hasten their return To Him.  The Work Of Redemption Wrought For Us B Christ Encourages To Hope For All Blessings From Him.  Our Transgressions And Our Sins Are As A Thick Cloud Between heaven And Earth:  Sins Separate Between Us And God; They Threaten A Storm of Wrath.  When God Pardons Sin, He Blots Out, He Dispels This Cloud, So That The Way To Heaven Is Open Again.  The Cloud Is Scattered By The Son Of Righteousness; It is Quite Gone.  The Comforts That Flow Into The Soul When Sin Is Pardoned, Are Clear (And) Shining After Clouds And Rain.  Let Not Israel Be Discouraged; Nothing Is To Hard For God;  Having Made All, He Can Make What Use He Pleases Of Any.

“The Lord, Not Idols,” Isaiah 44:6) Thus Saith The Lord The King Of Israel, And His Redeemer The Lord Of Hosts; I Am The First, And I Am The Last, And Beside Me There Is No God.  7) And Who, As I, Shall Call, And Declare It, And Set It In Order For Me, Since I Appointed The Ancient People?  And The Things That Are Coming, And Shall Come, Let Them Shew Unto Them.  8) Fear Ye Not, Neither Be Afraid:  Have Not I Told Thee From That Time, And Have Declared It?  Ye Are Even My Witnesses.  Is There A God Beside Me?  Yea, There Is No God; I Know Not Any.  9) They That Make A Graven Image Are All Of Them Vanity; And Their Delectable Things Shall Not Profit; And They Are Their Own Witnesses; They See Not, Nor Know; That They May Be Ashamed.  10) Who Hath Formed A god, Or Molten A Graven Image That Is Profitable For Nothing?  Habakkuk 2:18.  11) Behold All his Fellow Shall Be Ashamed:  And The Workmen, They Are Of Men:  Let Them All Be Gathered Together, Let Them Stand Up, Yet They Shall Fear, And They Shall Be Ashamed Together.  12) The Smith With The Tongs Both Worketh In The Coals, And Fashioneth It With Hammers, And Worketh It With The Strength Of His Arms; Yea he Is Hungry, And his Strength Faileth:  he Drinketh No Water, And Is Faint.  13) The Carpenter Stretcheth Out his Rule; he Marketh It Out With The Compass, And Maketh It After The Figure Of A man; That It May Remain In The House.  14) He Heweth him Down Cedars, And Taketh The Cypress And The Oak, Which he Strengtheneth For himself Among The Trees Of The Forest:  he Planteth An Ash, And The Rain Doth Nourish It.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v6, 7 Redeemer:   This term is also used in 41:14 and refers to the Zeal With Which The Lord Acts To Defend His People.  First … Last:  God Is Completely Sovereign Over Time (41:4).  v8, Do Not Fear:  When God Is On Your Side, You Do Not Need To Fear Anything Or Anyone Else.  Rock:  The image of a rock represents stability and protection (Psalm 62:2, 6, 7).  v9, an image:  This is the term used in The Second Commandment to describe an idol (Exodus 20:4).  Useless Is translated “without form” in Genesis 1:2.  v10, The Hebrew has the words god and image together, emphasizing the absurdity of worshiping an image molded by human hands.  v11, be ashamed:  When all people come face to face with God, it will be a day of shame for those who Rejected Him In This Life.  v13, 14 While people were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-28), idolaters made gods in the figure of a man.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – Regarding IdolIsaiah 44:13, 14, see Genesis 1:13) And God Said, Let Us Make Man In Our Image, After Our Likeness  These words are directed not to the earth, out of which man was made, as consulting with it, and to be assisting in the formation of man, as Moses Gerundensis, and other Jewish writers F6, which is wretchedly stupid; nor to the Angels, as the Targum of Jonathan, Jarchi, and others, who are not of God’s Privy Council, nor were concerned in any part of The Creation, and much less in the more Noble Part Of It: nor are The Words Spoken after the manner of kings, as Saadiah, using the plural number as expressive of honour and majesty; since such a way of speaking did not obtain very early, not even till the close of the Old Testament: but They Are Spoken By God The Father To The Son And Holy Ghost, Who Were Each Of Them Concerned (Included) In The Creation Of All Things, And Particularly Of Man: hence we read of Divine Creators and Makers in the plural number,        ( Job 35:10 ) ( Psalms 149:2 )    ( Ecclesiastes 12:1 ) and Philo the Jew acknowledges that these Words declare a plurality, and are expressive of others, being Co-Workers With God In Creation F7: and man being the principal part of The Creation, and for the sake of whom the world, and all things in it were made, and which being finished, he is introduced into it as into an house ready prepared and furnished for him; a consultation is held Among The Divine Persons about the formation of him; not because of any difficulty attending it, but as expressive of his honour and dignity; it being proposed he should be made not in the likeness of any of the creatures already made, but as near as could be in The Likeness And Image Of God. The Jews sometimes say, that Adam and Eve were created in The Likeness Of The Holy Blessed God, And His Shechinah F8;    ( Proverbs 8:30 ) and to this ancient Adam He Said, “Let Us Make Man In Our Image, After Our Likeness”: And Again, “Let Us Make Man”; To Whom Did He Say This?  the cause of causes said to “`Jod’, He, `Vau’, He”; that is, To Jehovah, which is in the midst of the ten numerations. What are the ten numerations? “`Aleph’, He, `Jod’, He”, that is, (Hyha) , “I Am That I Am, ( Exodus 3:14 ) And He That Says Let Us Make, Is Jehovah; I Am The First, And I Am The Last, And Beside Me There Is No God: and three Jods (YYY) Testify Concerning Him, That There Is None Above Him, Nor Any Below Him.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-8, Israel is here called Jeshurun, which means “The Upright One.”  Such only are Israelites indeed, in whom is no guile (deviousness, deceit).  Those That Serve God He Will Own.  He Will Help Them Over Difficulties, And In Their Services.  Water Is The Emblem (Symbol) Of The Holy Spirit; as water refreshes, cleanses, and makes the earth fruitful, So His Influences Make The Soul Fruitful.  This Gift Of The Holy Ghost Is The Great Blessing, The Plentiful Pouring Out Of Which God Kept For The Latter Days.  Where God Gives His Spirit, He Will Give All Other Blessings.  Hereby, Shall Be A Great Increase Of The Church; Thus It Shall Be Spread To Distant Places.  Was There Any Other Rock, Or Protector, That Could Defend Them?  None Besides Could Foretell These Things To Come, Of Which God By His Prophets Gave Notice.  All Was Set In Order In The Divine Predictions, As Well As In The Divine Purposes.  Could Any Other Have Done So?  Who Can Compare With Israel’s Redeemer And King?  v9-20, Image-making is described to expose the folly of idolaters. Amen.

“Israel the Chosen,” Isaiah 44:1) Yet Now Hear, O Jacob My Servant; And Israel, Whom I Have Chosen.  2) Thus Saith The Lord That Made Thee, And Formed Thee From The Womb, Which Will Help Thee; Fear Not, O Jacob, My Servant; and thou, Jesurun (Jeshurun), whom I Have chosen.  3) For I Will Pour Water Upon him That Is Thirsty, And Floods Upon The Dry Ground:  I Will Pour My Spirit Upon thy seed, And My Blessing Upon thine offspring:  4) And they shall Spring Up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.  5) One shall say, I am The Lord’s; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto The Lord, and surname himself by the name of Israel.  Exodus 13:9; Nehemiah 9:38.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, Now:  The Call to listen immediately is featured in 42:14; 43:1.  v2, Thus Says The Lord:  This Emphatic Statement Emphasizes That God Authored The Prophecy And Thus It Is Certain To Come To Pass.  Jeshurun meaning “Upright One,” is a poetic word for the nation of Israel (Deuteronomy 32:15).  v3, Pour My Spirit:  Moses Prayed For The Lord’s Spirit To Come On All Israel (Numbers 11:29); the prophet foretold It (Joel 2:28-32), And Christ Fulfilled It (Acts 2:14-36).  v4, Luxurious grass symbolizes prosperity.  v5, The repatriated would proudly identify themselves with The Lord.  The name of Israel would no longer be associated with a worm (41:14).

Quest Study Bible –  v2, “Jeshurun (Jesurun),” Another name for Israel, meaning one who is upright, or perhaps one who is pleasing.  It is used only three other times, all in Deuteronomy.  This may be an intentional allusion to a time when Jeshurun became proud, abandoned God, suffered and then was restored (Deuteronomy 32:15-43).  v5, “Why did they write God’s Name on their hands?”  The Israelites had a custom of Reminders Of God’s Law on their hands and foreheads (Exodus 13:9, 16).  But this may allude to a pagan practice of branding a slave with his owner’s name.  See an interesting parallel in 49:16, Where God Writes His Name On His Hands.

“God’s Mercy And Israel’s Unfaithfulness,” cont’d, Isaiah 43:22) But thou Hast Not Called Upon Me, O Jacob; But Thou Hast Been Weary Of Me, O Israel.  Malachi 1:13.  23) Thou Hast Not Brought Me The Small Cattle Of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou Honoured Me with thy sacrifices.  I Have Not Caused thee to serve with an offering, Nor Wearied thee with incense.   24) Thou Hast Bought Me No Sweet Cane With Money, Neither Hast thou Filled Me With The Fat Of thy sacrifices:  but thou Has Made Me To Serve With thy sins, thou Hast Wearied Me with thine iniquities.  Malachi 2:17; Jude 4.  25) I, Even I, Am He That Blotteth Out thy Transgressions For Mine Own Sake, And Will Not Remember thy sins.  Jeremiah 31:34.  26) Put Me In Remembrance:  Let Us Plead Together:  Declare thou, that thou Mayest Be Justified.  27) Thy first father Hath Sinned, and thy teachers Have Transgressed Against me.  Romans 5:12.  28) Therefore I Have Profaned the princes Of The Sanctuary, And Have Given Jacob To The Curse, And Israel To Reproaches.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v21, 22,  The Lord’s Accusation Was That The People Had Not Worshiped Him In The Way He Prescribed And With The Motivation He Demanded.  v23, 24, The exiles’ ingratitude—Nor Have You Honored Me—Contrasts With The Lord’s Forbearance (Patience)—You Have Burdened Me.  v25, For My Own Sake:  The Lord Chooses To Save And Forgive.  This Arises Out Of His Character.  v26, State your case:  The Lord Asks Israel To Answer His Charges.  v27, 28, First father  refers to Abraham (51:2).  Princes of the Sanctuary refers to the leaders of the priests in Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 24:5).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v22-28, Those Who neglect To Call Upon God, Are Weary of Him.  The Master Tired Not The Servants With Commands, But They Tired Him With Disobedience.  What Were The Riches Of God’s Mercy Toward Them?  I, Even I, Am He Who Yet Blotteth Out Thy Transgressions.  This Encourages Us To Repent, Because There Is Forgiveness With God, And Shows The Freeness Of Divine Mercy.  When God Forgives, He Forgets.  It Is Not For Any Thing In Us, But For His Mercies’ Sake, His Promises Sake; Especially For His Son’s Sake.  He Is Pleased To Reckon It His Honor.  Would Man Justify Himself Before God?  The Attempt Is Desperate:  Our First Father Broke The Covenant, And We All Have Copied His Example.  We Have No Reason To Expect Pardon, Except We Seek It By Faith In Christ, And That Is Always Attended By True Repentance, And Followed By Newness Of Life, By Hatred Of Sin, And Love To God.  Let Us Then Put Him In Remembrance Of The Promises He Has Made To The Penitent (Repentant), And The Satisfaction His Son Has made For Them.  Plead These With Him In Wrestling For Pardon; And Declare These Things, That Thou Mayest Be Justified (Made Righteous) Freely By His Grace.  This Is The Only Way, And It Is A Sure Way To Peace.  Amen!

“God’s Mercy And Israel’s Unfaithfulness,” Isaiah 43:14) Thus Saith The Lord your Redeemer, The Holy One Of Israel; For your sake I Have Sent To Babylon, And Have Brought Down All Their Nobles, And   The Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.  15) I Am The Lord, your Holy One, The Creator Of Israel, your King.  Hosea 13:10.  16) Thus Saith The Lord, Which Maketh A Way in The Sea, And A Path In The Mighty Waters;  17) Which Bringeth Forth The Chariot And Horse, The Army And The Power; They Shall Lie Down Together, They Shall Not Rise:  They Are Extinct, They Are Quenched As Tow (A Wick).  Exodus 14:4.  18) Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.  19) Behold, I Will Do A New Thing; Now It Shall Spring Forth; shall ye not know it?  I Will Even Make A Way In The Wilderness, And Rivers In The Desert.  20) The Beast Of The Field Shall Honour Me, The Dragons (Jackals) And The Owls:  Because I Give Waters In The Wilderness, And Rivers In The Desert, To Give Drink To My People, My Chosen.  Isaiah 48:21.   21) This People Have I Formed For Myself; they shall Shew Forth My Praise.  Luke 1:74; Ephesians 1:5.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v14, The Chaldeans were people who settled in lower Mesopotamia and founded the Neo-Babylonian empire.  v15-17, With The Titles The Lord (Exodus 3:14, 15), Holy One (1:4), Israel’s Creator, and your King, The Living God Declared His Intimate Relationship With The Israelites.   v18, The Lord Commanded The People Not To Remember The Past (46:9, 10).  The kingdom of Israel inaugurated at the first Exodus and the conquest of The Promised Land would be insignificant compared to The New Kingdom God Would Establish.  former things refers to the Prophecies of Judgment by Isaiah and other Prophets (see 42:9; 21-25; 43:9, 10; 46:8, 9; 48:3).   v19, 20, a road in the wilderness:  The Lord Would Give The Exiles An Unobstructed Route Back To The Promised Land.  rivers in the desert:  Even in desolate regions The Lord Would Refresh His People.  v21, 22,  The Lord’s Accusation Was That The People Had Not Worshiped Him In The Way He Prescribed And With The Motivation He Demanded.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v14-21, The Deliverance From Babylon Is Foretold, But There Is Reference To Greater Events.  The Redemption Of Sinners By Christ, The Conversion Of The Gentiles, And The Recall Of The Jews, Are Described.  All That Is to Be Done To Rescue Sinners, And To Bring The Believer To Glory, Is Little, Compared With That Wondrous Work Of Love, The Redemption Of Man.  Amen!
