Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v6, Those who come refers to the regathered exiles (v. 13). v7, Has He: The two questions that begin with these words expect a negative answer. v8, Sending it away refers to the exile ( v. 13). v9, iniquity … covered: See 40:2 for another statement that Israel’s punishment Atoned For Its Guilt. v10, 11, the fortified city will be desolate: For a similar idea see 25:2; 10-12; 26:5, 6.
Quest Study Bible – v6, “How has Israel blossomed?” Perhaps the blossom is the symbol of life in the new Jerusalem, With The Messiah As King (4:2). Israel would then mean all those that are Faithful To God, Jew and Gentile alike (Galatians 3:28; 6:16). Some, however, suggest that this refers to the Restoration and World-Wide Influence of The Jewish Nation, either after the exile in Babylon or sometime in the future. v8-9, “How could banishing refugees Atone for sin?” Atonement contains the idea of reconciling a broken relationship. A Sacrifice Atoned for sin because it Meant Someone Had Repented and Desired To Return To God. Though Judah had refused to Repent, its defeat and exile to a foreign land, coming about a century after Isaiah’s death, would turn the hearts of the nation back to God once again. God’s Judgment became a means of bringing God’s Grace. See “Does Judgment teach Righteousness better than Grace?” (26:9-10). v10-11, “Why Didn’t God Show Compassion For Those Who Couldn’t Understand?” Its not that the people couldn’t understand—they wouldn’t. They were seeking direction from idols instead of The One, True God. Their lack of Discernment was self-inflicted and deserved Judgment Rather Than Compassion.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v6-10, In the days of The Gospel, The Latter Days, The Gospel Church Shall Be More Firmly Fixed Than The Jewish Church, And Shall Spread Further. May our souls be continually watered and kept, that we may abound in The Fruit Of The Spirit, In all Goodness, Righteousness, And Truth. The Jews yet are kept separate and a numerous people; they have not been rooted out as those who slew them. The condition of that nation, through so many ages, forms a certain Proof Of The Divine Origin Of The Scriptures; and The Jews live amongst us, A Continued Warning Against Sin. But, though winds are ever so rough, ever so high, God Can Say To Them, Peace Be Still. And Though God Will Afflict His People, Yet He Will Make Their Afflictions Work For The Good Of Their Souls. According To This Promise, since the captivity in Babylon; no people have shown such hatred to idols and idolatry as the Jews. And to all God’s People, the design of affliction is to part them and sin. The Affliction Has Done Us Good, when we keep at a distance from the occasions of sin, and use care that we may not be tempted to it.
