Selah – Is defined as a Hebrew word that has been found at the ending of verses in Psalms and has been interpreted as an instruction calling for a break in the singing of The Psalm or it may mean “FOREVER.” An example of Selah is seeing the term used seventy-one times in The Psalms in the Hebrew Bible.

Psalm – A Sacred Song or Hymn

Amen – So Be It

“God Is Our Refuge And Strength,” cont’d, Psalm 46:8) Come, Behold The Works Of The Lord, What Desolations He Hath Made In The Earth.  9) He Makes Wars To Cease Unto The End Of The Earth; He Breaketh The Bow, And Cutteth The Spear In Sunder, He Burneth The Chariot In The Fire.  10) Be Still, And Know That I Am God:  I Will Be Exalted In The Earth.  11) The Lord Of Hosts Is With us, The God Of Jacob Is our REFUGE.  Selah.

Nelson’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-11, desolations:   The picture here is of Final Judgment (Psalm 1; 110).  Be still:  The call for stillness Before The Lord is not a preparation for Worship, but for impending Judgment  (Habakkuk 2:20; Zephaniah 1:7; Zechariah 2:13).  GOD WILL BE EXALTED.  ALL THE EARTH WILL BOW BEFORE HIM.

Quest Study Bible – v8, “Why Does God Bring   Desolation’s?”  To frustrate the instruments of evil and injustice:  wars, bows and spears would be broken (v. 9).  God Would Be Victorious When Human Wickedness Was Defeated.  The writer sees sin and evil Conquered By The Judgment Of God:  fighting and killing will come to an end When God Finally Exerts His Power.  Also see “Why Use Destruction As An Image For God?  (50:3).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v6-11 Come And See The Effects Of Desolating Judgments, And Stand In Awe Of God.  This Shows The Perfect Security Of The Church, And Is An Assurance Of lasting Peace.  Let Us Pray For The Speedy Approach Of Those Glorious Days, And In Silent Submission Let Us Worship And Trust In Our Almighty Sovereign.  Let All Believers Triumph In This, That The Lord of Hosts, The God Of Jacob, Has Been, Is, And Will Be With Us And Will Be Our REFUGE.  Mark This, Take The Comfort, And Say, IF GOD BE FOR US, Who Can Be Against Us?  With This, Through Life And In Death, Let Us Answer Every Fear.  Amen.

Psalm – A Sacred Song or Hymn

“God Is Our Refuge And Strength,” Psalm 46:1) God Is our Refuge And Strength, A Very Present Help In Trouble.  2) Therefore will not we Fear, thought the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;  3) Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.  Selah.  4) There Is A River, The Streams Whereof Shall Make Glad The City Of God, The Holy Place Of The Tabernacles Of The Most High.  5) God Is In The Midst Of Her; She Shall Not Be Moved:  God Shall Help Her, And That Right Early.  6) The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved:  He Uttered His Voice, The Earth Melted.  7) The Lord Of Hosts Is With Us; The God Of Jacob Is our Refuge.  Selah.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v1, God [Is] Our Refuge And Strength  That Is, Christ, Who Is God As Well As Man, Is The “REFUGE” For Souls To Fly Unto For Safety; as for sinners, In A View Of Danger, Wrath, and Misery, So For Saints, In Every Time Of Distress; typified by the Cities of Refuge, under the Legal Dispensation; (See Gill on Psalms 9:9); And He It Is From Whom They Have All Their Spiritual Strength, And Every Renewal And Supply Of It, To Exercise Grace, Perform Duties, Withstand Enemies, BEAR THE CROSS PATIENTLY, Show A Fortitude (Courage) Of Mind Under The Sorest Distresses, And Hold On And Out Unto The End: In Short, HE IS THE STRENGTH OF OUR HEARTS, Under The Greatest Trials, Of Their (Our) Lives, Amidst The Greatest Dangers; And Of Their Salvation, Notwithstanding All Their Enemies;  A Very Present Help In Trouble;  Whether Inward Or Outward, Of Soul Or Body; THE LORD HELPS HIS PEOPLE UNDER IT TO BEAR IT, And He Helps Them Out Of It In The Most Proper And Seasonable Time: they are poor helpless creatures in themselves; nor can any other help them But The Lord, Who Made Heaven And Earth; And He Helps Presently, Speedily, And Effectually: In The Hebrew Text It Is, “HE IS FOUND AND EXCEEDING HELP IN TROUBLE” F20; In All Kinds Of Trouble That The Saints Come Into, The Lord Has Been Found, By Experience, TO BE AN EXCEEDING GREAT HELPER OF THEM; MOREOVER, HE IS EASILY AND ALWAYS TO BE COME AT (or TO GO TO), AND FOUND BY THEM FOR THEIR HELP (or OUR HELP IN TIMES OF TROUBLE).  Amen.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary –  v2, 3 earth be removed:   The Wording of vv. 2, 3 moves the Action To A Cosmic Level.  What if the struggle was not just an ordinary war with ordinary weapons?  What if the war involved even shaking the mountains and causing the seas to roar?  It makes no difference.  GOD IS A REFUGE FOR HIS PEOPLE AGAINST EVERYTHING ACTUAL OR IMAGINED.  v4, 5  God Is In The Midst Of Her:  The people do not have an Absentee Deliverer, A defense that is only sometimes present.  The Lord Lives With His People.  Consequently, HIS PROTECTION CAN BE COUNTED ON.  v6,7  The Lord Of Hosts Is With Us:  These Words form a Refrain (a Recurring Phrase) (see v. 11).  The pairing of the Words “The Lord Of Hosts” with “The God Of Jacob’ is notable in this verse and v. 11.  This Refrain Praises The Almighty, The Commander Of Heaven’s Armies, For Choosing To Live With The Descendants Of Jacob, His People.

Quest Study Bible – v2-3, “Was this an actual earthquake?”  Perhaps.  But Biblical writers often used poetic language, portraying political or social chaos as the shaking of the earth and seas.  The image of a trembling earth and sky was also used to describe the final tumult Of The Day Of The Lord (Joel 3:14-16).  v4, “The City Of God,”  Jerusalem, also called Zion.  The City Was Fortified By God’s Presence.  v5, “Is dawn the best time to get God’s Help?”   Not necessarily.  Attacks generally were launched at cities at dawn, allowing the entire day for the battle to be decided.  God’s Help Arrived On Time, At Break Of Day, just as the battle would have been starting.  God’s Help Comes When We Need It Most.  v6, “What international turmoil does this describe?”  It’s impossible to say.  There are no clues to identify the specific historical crisis that prompted The Writing of this Psalm.  In general, though, it covers several kinds of conflicts:  with nature (vv. 1-3), enemies (vv. 4-7) and the world (vv. 8-11).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-5 This Psalm Encourages To Hope And Trust In God, In His Power And Providence (His Will), And His Gracious Presence With His Church In The Worst Of Times.  We may apply It To Spiritual enemies, and The Encouragement We Have That, Through Christ, We Shall Be Conquerors, Over Them.  He Is A Help, A Present Help, A Help Found, One Whom We Have Found To Be So; A Help At Hand, One That Is Always Near; We Cannot Desire A Better, Nor Shall We Ever Find The Like In Any Creature.  Let those be troubled At The Troubling Of The Waters, who build their confidence on a floating foundation; But Let Not Those Be Alarmed Who Are Led To The Rock (Christ Jesus), And There Find Firm Footing.  Here Is Joy To The Church, Even In Sorrowful Times.  The River Alludes To The Graces, And Consolations Of The Holy Spirit, Which Flow Through Every Part Of The Church, And Through God’s Sacred Ordinances (Laws), Gladdening The heart, Of Every Believer.  It Is Promised That The Church Shall Not Be Moved.  If God Be In Our Hearts, By His Word Dwelling Richly In Us, We Shall Be Established, We Shall Be Helped; LET US TRUST AND NOT BE AFRAID.  Amen.

Nelson’s Concise Bible Commentary – v40, The Child Grew:  With this note, The Story Of Jesus’ Infancy Ends.  The Narrative picks up in v. 41 some Twelve Years Later.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v40,  In All Things It Became Christ To Be Made Like Unto His Brethren, Therefore He Passed Through Infancy And Childhood As Other Children, YET WITHOUT SIN, And With Manifest Proofs Of THE DIVINE NATURE IN HIM.  By The Spirit Of God All His Faculties Performed Their Offices In A Manner Not Seen In Any One Else.  Other Children Have Foolishness Bound In Their Hearts, Which Appears In What They Say Or Do, BUT HE WAS FILLED WITH SALVATION, BY THE INFLUENCE OF THE HOLY GHOST; Everything He Said And Did, Was Wisely Said And Wisely Done, Above His years.  Other Children Show The Corruption Of Their Nature:  NOTHING BUT THE GRACE OF GOD WAS UPON HIM.  Amen.

“JESUS PRESENTED IN THE TEMPLE,” III,  Luke 2:33) And Joseph and His (Jesus’) mother Marvelled At Those Things Which Were Spoken Of Him.  34) And Simeon Blessed them, and said unto Mary His mother, Behold, This Child Is Set For The Fall And Rising Again Of Many In Israel; And For A SIGN Which Shall Be Spoken Against;  35) (Yea, A Sword Shall Pierce Through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be Revealed.  Psalm 42:10; 1 Corinthians 11:19.  36) And there was one Anna, a Prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aseer:  she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;  Exodus 15:20.  37) And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from The Temple, But Served God With Fastings And prayers Night And Day.  Acts 26:7.  38) And she Coming In That Instant Gave Thanks Likewise Unto The Lord, And Spake Of Him To All Them That Looked For Redemption In Jerusalem.

Nelson’s Concise Bible Commentary – v33-35  a sword:  The image is of large, broad sword striking Mary.  She would suffer much pain in watching Jesus’ Rejection.  v36, 37  The Testimony of Anna compliments Simeon’s Testimony.  Anna work as a Prophetess in The Temple Court suggested that she addressed all who would listen to her.  v38, 39  Redemption In Jerusalem Is another way of speaking of The Consolation of Israel (v. 25).

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v35, Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also
Meaning either the sword, “or spear of scandal”, as the Arabic version renders it; so the reproach of the tongues of men, is compared to a sharp sword, ( Psalms 57:4 ) and such The Virgin might meet with on account of her conception in (an) unmarried state, which might greatly wound her soul; or else the Sorrows she met with on account of her SON: AS HE WAS A MAN OF SORROWS, so was she a woman of sorrows, From His Cradle To His Cross; And His Sorrows, like so many darts, or javelins, Rebounded From Him To Her, and Pierced Her Soul Through; as when Herod sought His Life,      ( Matthew 2:13 Matthew 2:14 ) when she Had Lost Him for a whole day, ( Luke 2:48 ) and when He Was Frequently Exposed To Danger among the spiteful and malicious Jews; But Never More Than When She Stood At His Cross, And Saw Him, In His Agonies, Extended On The Tree, Bleeding, Gasping, And Dying, ( John 19:25 ) . Some think this refers to Martyrdom, which she was to Suffer By The Sword, of which The Scripture Is Silent, Epiphanius, an ancient writer, seems to hint at it F14.   That the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed;  that is, All This Offence Was To Be Taken At Christ, And He To Be Spoken Against; and all these Afflictions, Reproaches, and Persecutions, He And His Were To Endure For This End; that the secret thoughts of men might be discovered, and they be known to be what they were, whether hypocrites, or good men, foes or Friends Of Christ: so on the one hand, what were the Scribes and Pharisees, who talked of a Messiah, and pretended to Righteousness and Holiness, and yet when The Messiah Came, Rejected Him, And So All Such Who Followed Christ with worldly views, and expected a temporal kingdom, But Left Him when they found it otherwise, and Judas, One Of His Disciples; and, on the other hand, (those) who were Sincere and Hearty? as the rest of His Disciples, Joseph of Arimathea, and others, Who Abode By Him, Notwithstanding THE CROSS; and The Same Use Have All Persecutions, Errors, and Heresies, The Opposition and Contradiction of men in every shape now, and the same end is answered; wicked men, and hypocrites, are known to be what they are; and good men Are Made Manifest (clearly apparent); and (in) What Each Think Of Christ And His Gospel, Is Discovered Hereby; see ( 1 Corinthians 11:19 ) .

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v33 – v35, Joseph and Mary Marveled At The Things Which Were Spoken of This Child.  Simeon Shows Them Likewise, What Reason They Had To REJOICE WITH TREMBLING.  And JESUS, HIS DOCTRINE, And PEOPLE, Are Still Spoken Against; HIS TRUTH And HOLINESS Are Still Denied And Blasphemed, HIS PREACHED WORD Is Still THE TOUCHSTONE (IMPORTANCE IN) Of Men’s Characters.  The Secret Good Affections In The Minds Of Some, Will Be Revealed By Their Embracing Christ; The Secret Corruptions Of Others Will Be Revealed By Their Enmity (Hostility) To Christ.  Men Will Be Judged By The Thoughts Of Their Hearts Concerning Christ.  HE SHALL BE A SUFFERING JESUS; His Mother Shall Suffer With Him, Because Of The Nearness Of Her Relation And Affection.   v36- v40, There Was Much Evil Then In The Church, Yet God Left Not Himself Without Witness.  Anna Always Dwelt In, Or At least Attended At, The Temple.  She Was Always In A Praying Spirit; Gave Herself To Prayer, And In All Things She Served God.  Those To Whom Christ Is Made Known,  Have Great Reason To Thank The Lord.  She Taught Others Concerning Him.  Let The Example Of The Venerable (Greatly Respected) Saints, Simeon And Anna, Give Courage To Those Whose Hoary (Gray) Heads Are, Like Theirs, A Crown Of Glory, Being Found In The Way Of Righteousness.  The Lips Soon To Be Silent In The Grave, Should Be Showing Forth The Praises Of The Redeemer.

“JESUS PRESENTED IN THE TEMPLE,” cont’d,  Luke 2:25) And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was Just and Devout, Waiting For The Consolation of Israel:  And The Holy Ghost Was Upon him.  26) And It Was Revealed Unto Him By The Holy Ghost, That he Should Not See Death, Before he Had Seen The Lord’s Christ.  27) And he Came By The Spirit Into The Temple:  and when the parents Brought In The Child Jesus, To Do For Him After The Custom Of The Law,  Acts 8:29.  28) Then Took he HIM Up In his arms, And Blessed God, and said,  29) Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in Peace, According To Thy Word:  Genesis 46:30.  30) For mine eyes Have Seen THY SALVATION,  2 Samuel 23:1-5.  31) Which Thou Hast Prepared Before The Face Of All people;  32) A Light To Lighten The Gentiles, And The Glory Of Thy People Israel.  Isaiah 9:2; Acts 13;47.

Nelson’s Complete Bible Commentary – v25, 26, Simeon was waiting for The Consolation Of Israel, a Hope that parallels the Hope of national Deliverance expressed in the two hymns of ch. 1.  This Deliverance Would Involve The Work Of (The) Messiah.  Holy Spirit:  Luke Highlights The Presence Of The Spirit.  v27, 28  Into The Temple:  The location within The Temple is not given, but Mary’s presence suggests The Court of Women.  v29, 30  Simeon Identified God’s Salvation As Being Personified In Jesus.  v31, 32 A Light To Bring Salvation To The Gentiles … The Glory Of Your People Israel:  This is the First Explicit Statement in Luke that includes both Jew and Gentile.  Salvation Is Portrayed As Light (1:79).  Jesus Is The Glory Of Israel Because Through Him The Nation Would See The Fulfillment Of God’s Promises.

Quest Study Bible –  v25, “The Consolation of Israel,”  This Phrase Refers To The Old Testament Hope In A Messiah That Would finally and decisively deliver Israel from the political bondage of other nations.  Zechariah had earlier expressed this same hope (1:68-75).  v32, “How common was it to think of The Messiah Being For the Gentiles as well as for the Jews?”   This was unusual but not unprecedented.  Isaiah looked forward to the day when nations from around the world would come and Worship God In Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:2-4; 42:6).  Later, the idea that Gentiles Would Receive God’s Blessings without having to become Jews was called a Mystery (Ephesians 3:5-6).

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v32, A Light to Lighten the Gentiles  Or for the Revelation of the Gentiles; to reveal the Love, Grace, and Mercy of God, An Everlasting Righteousness, and the Way of Life and Salvation to them. Reference seems to be had to ( Isaiah 42:6 ) ( 49:6 ) . “Light”, is one of The Names of The Messiah in the Old Testament, as in ( Psalms 43:3 ) ( Daniel 2:22 ) , which passages are by the Jews F11 themselves interpreted of Christ; and is a Name often used of Him in the New Testament: it is True Of Him as God, He Is Light Itself, and In Him Is No Darkness At All; and as The Creator of Mankind, He Is That Light Which Lightens Every Man With The Light of Nature and Reason; and as The Messiah, He Is Come A Light Into The World: The Light Of The Gospel, In The Clear Shine Of It, Is From Him; The Light Of Grace In His People, who were in darkness itself, He Is The Author and Donor Of; as He Is Also Of The Light Of Glory and Happiness, In The World To Come: and Particularly, the Gentiles Enjoy This Benefit Of Light By HIM; who were, and as this supposes they were, in darkness, as they had been some hundreds of years before The Messiah’s Coming: they were in the dark about The Being and Perfections of God, About The Unity of God, and The Trinity Of Persons In The Godhead, and About God In Christ; About His Worship, The Rule And Nature Of It; and The Manner Of Atonement, and Reconciliation For Sin; The Person, Righteousness, and Sacrifice Of Christ; The Spirit Of God, and His Operations On The Souls Of Men; The Scriptures Of Truth, And Both Law And Gospel; The Resurrection Of The Dead, and A Future State: Now, Though Christ In His Personal Ministry, Was Sent only to the Jews, Yet After His Resurrection, He Gave His Disciples A Commission To Go Into All The World, To Preach The Gospel To The Gentiles, In Order To Turn Them From Darkness To Light; and hereby multitudes were called out of darkness into Marvelous Light: and this Simeon had knowledge of, and a few more besides him; otherwise, the generality of the Jewish nation were of opinion, that when The Messiah came, the nations of the world would receive no benefit by Him, no Light, Nor Comfort, Nor Peace, Or Prosperity: but all the reverse would befall them, as darkness, calamity, and misery: and so they express themselves in a certain place;F12 the Israelites look, or wait for  `Redemption; For The Day Of The Lord Shall Be “Light to them”; but; the nations, why do they wait for HIM? for HE shall be “to them darkness, and not Light”.”  But the contrary, Simeon, Under Divine Inspiration, Declares, Blessed Be God, It Has Proved True: he adds,  and The Glory of Thy People Israel;  which is true of Israel in a literal sense, inasmuch as The Messiah Was Born of the Jews, and Among them; and Was First Sent and Came to them, and Lived and Dwelled with them; Taught in their streets, and Wrought His Miracles In The Midst of them; though this was an aggravation of their ingratitude and unbelief, In Rejecting Him: The Gospel Was First Preached To Them, even after The Commission Was Enlarged To Carry It Among The Gentiles; and many of them were Converted, and The First Gospel Church Was Planted Among Them; and An Additional Glory was made to them, by The Calling of the Gentiles, and joining them to them (Jews), through The Ministry Of The Apostles, who were all Jews; who went forth from Zion, and carried The Word Of The Lord from Jerusalem, to the several parts of the world: and this also is more especially True, of The Mystical, or Spiritual Israel of God, Whose Glory Christ Is; Being Made Of God Unto Them, Wisdom, Righteousness, Sanctification, and Redemption; they having such an Head, Husband, Saviour, and Redeemer, As He; and they Being Clothed With HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND WASHED IN HIS BLOOD, SANCTIFIED BY HIS GRACE, AND MADE MEET (Made Ready To Come Into His Presence) FOR ETERNAL GLORY; to which they (Gentiles) have a Right and Claim, Through The Grace Of God, And Merits Of Christ; and Therefore Glory not in themselves, BUT IN CHRIST, WHO IS THEIR ALL IN ALL.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v25 – 32, The Same Spirit That Provided For The Support Of Simeon’s Hope, Provided For His Joy.  Those Who Would See Christ Must Go To His Temple.  Here Is A Confession Of His Faith, That This Child In His Arms Was THE SAVIOUR, SALVATION ITSELF, THE SALVATION OF GOD’S APPOINTING.  He Bides Farewell To This World.  How Poor Does This World Look To One That Has Christ In His Arms, And Salvation In His View!  See Here, How Comfortable Is The Death Of A Good Man; He Departs In Peace With God, Peace With His Own Conscience, In Peace With Death.  Those That Have Welcomed Christ, May Welcome Death.

“JESUS PRESENTED IN THE TEMPLE,”  Luke 2:21) And When Eight Days Were Accomplished For The Circumcising Of The Child, His Name Was Called JESUS, Which Was So Named Of The Angel Before He Was Conceived In The Womb.  Matthew 1:21.  22) And when the days of her Purification according to the Law of Moses were accomplished, They Brought Him To Jerusalem, TO PRESENT HIM TO THE LORD;  23) (As It Is Written In The Law Of The Lord, Every Male That Openeth The Womb Shall Be Called Holy To The Lord;)  Numbers 3:13.  24) And To Offer A Sacrifice According To That Which Is Said In The Law Of The Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Quest Study Bible – v21-24, “Why these Ceremonies for parents and infants?”  To fulfill The Law Of The Lord (v. 39).  Jewish families went through at least three Ceremonies after the birth of a first born son:  (1) circumcision.  As a Sign of the Jews Covenant With God, each Hebrew boy was circumcised on the eighth day after his birth (Leviticus 12:3).  (2) Redemption of the first born.  Each first born son was presented to God a month after his birth, a Dedication Acknowledging that he Belonged to God.  The child would be “Redeemed,” that is “Repurchased,” by giving a Sacrificial Offering in his place (Exodus 2:11-16).  (3) Purification of the mother.  For forty days following the birth of a son (80 days following the birth of a daughter), a mother was considered unclean.  At the end of this ritual impurity, a Sacrifice was offered as part of her cleansing process.  See “Why would a good thing like giving birth require purification?”  (Leviticus 12:4).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v21-24, OUR LORD JESUS WAS NOT BORN IN SIN, AND DID NOT NEED THAT MORTIFICATION  (EMBARRASSMENT AND SHAME) OF A CORRUPT NATURE, OR THAT RENEWAL UNTO HOLINESS, WHICH WERE SIGNIFIED BY CIRCUMCISION.  This Ordinance Was, In His Case, A Pledge Of His Future Perfect Obedience To The Whole Law, In The Midst Of Sufferings And Temptations, Even Unto Death For Us.  At The End Of Forty Days, Mary went up to The Temple to Offer The Appointed Sacrifices for her purification.  Joseph Also Presented The Holy Child Jesus, Because, As A First-Born Son, He Was To Be Presented To The Lord, And Redeemed According To The Law.  Let Us Present Our Children To The Lord Who Gave Them To Us, Beseeching (Begging) Him To Redeem Them From Sin And Death, And Make Them Holy To Himself.  Amen.

“The Shepherds And The Angels,” Luke 2:8) And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  9) And, Lo, The Angel Of The Lord came upon them, And The Glory Of The Lord Shone Round About them:  and they were sore afraid.  10) And The Angel Said Unto them, Fear Not; For, Behold, I Bring You Good Tidings Of Great Joy,  Which Shall Be To All People.  11) For Unto You Is Born This Day In The City Of David A Saviour , Which Is Christ The Lord.  12) And This Shall Be A Sing Unto You; Ye Shall Find The Babe Wrapped In Swaddling Clothes, Lying In A manger.  13) And Suddenly There Was With The Angel A Multitude Of The heavenly Host Praising God, And Saying,  Psalm 103:20; Hebrew 1:14.  14) Glory To God In The Highest, And On Earth Peace, Good Will Toward Men.  1 John 4:9.  15) And it came to pass, as the Angels were gone away from them into Heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and See This Thing Which The Lord Hath made Known Unto Us.  16) And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph and The Babe Lying In A Manger.  17) And When They Had Seen It, They Made Known Abroad The Saying Which Was Told Them Concerning This Child.  18) And all they that heard It Wondered At Those Things Which Were Told Them by the Shepherds.  19) But Mary Kept All These Things, And Pondered Them In Her Heart.  20) And the shepherds returned, Glorifying And Praising God For All The Things That They Had Heard And Seen, As It Was Told Unto Them.

Nelson’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8, The shepherds kept watch to protect the sheep from wild animals.  v9, 10 Glory Refers to Evidence Of God’s Majestic Presence.  In This Scene, The Glory Is The Appearance Of Light In The Midst Of Darkness.  v11, 12,  The city of David  refers to Bethlehem.  Savior … Christ … Lord:  These Three Titles Summarize The SAVING WORK OF JESUS AND HIS SOVEREIGN POSITION.  The Word Christ Means “Anointed,” The Word Lord Was A Title Of A Ruler.  v13, Heavenly Host refers to an Entourage of Angels.  v14, Glory Refers To praise Given To God.  Goodwill Toward Men:  The Phrase Means That People Are The Objects Of God’s Goodwill.

Quest Study Bible – v9-12, “Why Announce The Birth Of Jesus To The Shepherds?”  Perhaps the shepherds were more Receptive To God’s Plans than, say, the religious leaders in Jerusalem.  The more orthodox members of society despised shepherds for being unclean by strict ceremonial standards.  Their reputation was that they were untrustworthy—a shepherd’s testimony was not valid for legal matters.  Yet God Chose Them To Be The First Witnesses To The Birth Of Christ (vv. 17-18)!  Shepherds may have been chosen because they represented all who needed cleansing.  JESUS WAS A KING FOR ALL THOSE HUMBLE ENOUGH TO SEE THEIR NEED FOR A SAVIOR.  Amen.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v15, And it came to pass, as the Angels  The Persic version reads in the singular number, “the angel: were gone away from them into Heaven”, from whence they came, and which was the place of their abode and residence; and therefore they are called the Angels of Heaven, where they always behold The Face Of God, Hearken To The Voice Of His Commandment, and Go and Come At His Orders; and These having finished Their embassy, delivered Their message to the shepherds, and done All The Work They Came About,  departed from them:  and, as the Ethiopic version adds, “and Ascended up into Heaven”; and as soon as They were gone, immediately,  the shepherds said one to another, let us now go even to Bethlehem  the place where the Angel said The Saviour Was Born,  and see This Thing Which Hath Come To Pass, Which The Lord Hath Made Known To Us:  from whence it appears, that it was not from diffidence of the matter, as questioning the Truth of what the Angel said, that they moved one another to go to Bethlehem; for they firmly Believed The Thing Was Come To Pass, which the Angel had told them of, and that what he said was From The Lord; nor did they act any criminal part, or indulge a vain curiosity, in going to Bethlehem to see what was done; for it seems to be The Will Of God That They Should Go, and for which they had A Direction From The Angel, and A Sign Given them by which they might know The New Born Saviour from any other infant, ( Luke 2:12 ) and which would also be a further Confirmation of their Faith, and by which they would be qualified not only as ear, but as eyewitnesses of The Truth of This Fact, To Report It With Greater Certainty.  v16, And they came with haste  In the night, leaving their flocks, to see their Incarnate Lord, as Zacchaeus hastened down from the tree to receive The Saviour. The Wonderfulness of The Vision, the Importance of The Thing Related, the eagerness of their spirits to see The Thing that was told them, put them on making quick dispatch, and hastening to the city with all speed:  and found Mary and Joseph;  as they had been directed by the Angel, in the city of Bethlehem, in an inn there, and in a stable in the inn:  and The Babe Lying in a manger:  where Mary had put It As Soon As Born, And Had Wrapped It In Swaddling Clothes; because there was no room in the inn, and as the Angel had told them They Should Find It, ( Luke 2:12 )  v17, And when they had seen It  Or “HIM”, as the Arabic version reads, the child Jesus, or “them”, Joseph, Mary, and The Child; or this whole affair, as had been related to them:  they made known abroad;  not only in the inn, and among all the people there but throughout the city of Bethlehem,  the saying which was told them concerning This Child:  both what the Angel had told them concerning His Birth, and what HE WAS, and where HE LAY; and what Mary had told them concerning the Notice she had from an Angel of The Conception Of Him, and The Manner Of It, and of What He Should Be; and likewise what Joseph had told them, how an Angel had appeared to him, and had Acquainted him, after The Conception of HIM that It Was Of The Holy Ghost; and was Bid to Call His Name Jesus: as Mary also was, because He Was To Be The Saviour Of His People from their sins: for, no doubt, but they had a conversation with Joseph and Mary about HIM; and as they could not fail of relating to them, what they had seen and heard that night in the fields, it is reasonable to suppose, that Joseph and Mary would give them some account of the above things; which all make up the saying, or report, they spread abroad: the Persic version reads, “what they had heard of the Angel”; but there is no reason to confine it to that.  v18, And all they that heard It  What the shepherds related of what they had heard from the Angel, and from Joseph and Mary, and what they had Seen themselves;  wondered at Those Things that were told them by the shepherds: for though they expected The Messiah, and that He Would Be Born at Bethlehem, yet they did not imagine that He Would Be Born of such mean (poor) parents, and appear in such mean circumstances, and in so contemptible a place; and that shepherds, and not the princes of Israel, should have the first notice of It; and yet The Account which these shepherd, who were plain hearted men, and could never be thought to invent such a story, and spread it, and impose on men, without any interest in it, was very surprising; so that they knew not what to say to it, neither to deny, nor believe it; accordingly, the Persic version renders the whole thus, “and whoever heard, wondering, stuck at It”; hesitated about It, and yet astonished at the particulars of It; just as Christ’s hearers were in ( Luke 4:22 ) who wondered at His Ministry, and the Manner of It, and yet objected the meanness of His parentage and education.  v19, But Mary kept All These Things  Which the shepherds had related to her:  and Pondered [Them] in her heart;  or compared Tin her mind, with what had been said to herself by the Angel, and also by her husband, as well as what was said by Elisabeth at the time she made her a visit; but she said nothing of Them to others, lest she should be thought an enthusiast, or a vain boaster; and therefore left things, till time should make a discovery of Them in a proper way, and in the best season.  v20, And the shepherds returned  From Bethlehem, to the fields, and to their flock there;  Glorifying and Praising God For All The Things that they had heard;  from Joseph and Mary:  and Seen;  as The Babe Lying In The Manger:  As It Was Told Unto them;  by the Angel: they Glorified God on account of The birth Of The Messiah; and Praised Him, Wondering At His Grace, and The High Honour Put Upon Them, that they should be Acquainted With It; and that there was such an exact agreement between The Things They Had Seen, and the Angel’s Account Of Them.

“THE BIRTH OF JESUS (CHRIST),” cont’d, Luke 2:1) And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.  2) (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)  Acts 5:37.  3) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.  4) And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)  Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:16.  5) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, Being Great With Child.  6) And so it was, that, while they were there, The Days Were Accomplished that she should be Delivered.  7) And she Brought Forth her Firstborn Son, And Wrapped Him In Swaddling Clothes, And Laid Him In A Manger; Because There Was No Room For Them In The Inn.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, 2, Augustus  was the Roman emperor from 31 B. C. to A.D 14.  Quirinius was the governor or administrator over a major census organized to facilitate the collection of taxes.  v3, 4, The registration took place at a person’s ancestral home (see 2 Samuel 24).   The journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem was about 90 miles, at least a three-day trip. v5, 6, his betrothed wife:  That Mary made the trip with Joseph suggests that they were already married.  However, the marriage had not yet been consummated (see Matthew 1:24, 25).

Quest Study Bible – v1-2, “When Was Jesus Born?”  Perhaps a year or so before Herod the Great’s death in 4 B.C. (Matthew 2:19). The Actual Date Of Jesus’ Birth Was Not Discussed Until The Fourth Century, the delay leading to some uncertainty.  The Italian monk that devised the Christian calendar complicated matters by making a miscalculation.  Confusion also exists because the only census by Quirinius as yet found in other historical sources occurred too late (A.D. 6) to be the first one Luke mentions here.  v4, “The house and line of David,”  The Old Testament Prophets foretold that The Messiah Would Be A Descendant Of king David’s royal family (Isaiah 11:1; Ezekiel 37:24; Hosea 3;5).  Also see “How has David’s house and kingdom endured forever?”  (2 Samuel 7:16).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, The Fullness Of Time Was Now Come, When God Would Send Forth His Son, Made Of A Woman, And Made Under The Law.  The Circumstances Of His Birth Were Very Mean (Poor, Meek And Humble).  Christ Was Born At An Inn; He Came Into The World To Sojourn Here For A While, As At An Inn, And To Teach Us To Do Likewise.  We Are Become By Sin Like An Outcast Infant, Helpless And Forlorn; And Such A One Was Christ.  He Well Knew How Unwilling We Are To Be Meanly Lodged, Clothed, Or Fed; How We Desire To Have Our Children Decorated And Indulged; How Apt The Poor Are To Envy The Rich, And How Prone The Rich To Disdain The Poor.  But When We By Faith View The Son Of God Being Made Man And Lying In A Manger, Our Vanity, Ambition, And Envy Are Checked.  We Cannot, With This Object Rightly Before Us, Seek Great Things For Ourselves Or Our Children.  Amen.

“THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST,”  Matthew 1:18) Now The Birth Of Jesus Christ Was On This Wise:  When As His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she Was Found With Child Of The Holy Ghost.  Galatians 4:4.  19) Then Joseph her husband, being a Just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.  Deuteronomy 24:1.  20) But while he thought on These Things, Behold, The Angel Of The Lord Appeared Unto him in a Dream, Saying, Joseph, Thou Son Of David, Fear Not To Take Unto Thee Mary Thy Wife:  For That Which Is Conceived In Her Is Of The Holy Ghost.  Luke 1:35.  21) And She Shall Bring Forth A Son, And Thou Shalt Call His Name JESUS:  For He Shall Save His People From Their Sins.  Genesis 49:10.  22) Now All This Was Done, That It Might Be Fulfilled Which Was Spoken Of The Lord By The Prophet, Saying,  23) Behold, A Virgin Shall Be With Child, And Shall Bring Forth A Son, And They Shall Call His Name Emmanuel, Which Being Interpreted Is, God With Us.  Isaiah 7:14.  24) Then Joseph Being Raised From Sleep Did As The Angel of The Lord Had Bidden him, and Took Unto him His Wife:  25) And knew her not till she Had Brought Forth her Firstborn Son:  and he Called His Name JESUS.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v18, betrothed:  In Jewish culture, this covenant was made about a year before the consummation of the marriage.  It was during the one-year period of the betrothal that Mary was found to be pregnant.  The fact the Mary Was A Virgin At This Time is clearly implied by the phrase before they came together, and by the Righteous Character of Joseph and his desire to divorce Mary When Her Pregnancy Became Known (v.19).  v19, Joseph wanted to divorce Mary on the grounds of infidelity.  Joseph could have made the divorce a public matter, or he could have gone through a private ceremony before two witnesses.  Being a gracious and Just man, Joseph decided to keep it private.  v20, Conceived … Of The Holy Spirit:  Verses 1-17 Establish JESUS As A Legal Son Of Joseph; vv. 18-25 deny that Joseph was JESUS’ physical father.  v21-24, Behold … Immanuel (Emmanuel):  This is a quotation from Isaiah 7:14.  In this verse, the Prophet Isaiah consoles king Ahaz of Judah.  A coalition of two kings was opposing Ahaz.  Isaiah tells (him) the plans of his enemies will not succeed.  As a Sign to Ahaz, A Son Would Be Born To A Woman, And Before That Boy Reached The Age Where He Could Tell Right From Wrong, the two kings would no longer be a threat to Ahaz.  Matthew makes it clear that Isaiah’s words find their Ultimate Fulfillment In The Birth Of Jesus, A Sign To People Of All Ages That GOD WAS WITH THEM.  v25, Joseph did not know Mary physically Until She Gave Birth To JESUS.  The brothers and sisters of JESUS were younger siblings born to Joseph and Mary After JESUS’ Birth (13:55, 56).

Quest Study Bible –  v19, “Why did Joseph consider divorce?”  His wife-to-be was Pregnant and Her Child wasn’t his — a disgrace in era!  Unlike today, first century engagements were binding premarital contracts leading to marriage.  During the year of engagement, the couple behaved like husband and wife (except that they did not live together or have sex).  To break off such an engagement, a divorce was required.  v23, “Why A Virgin Birth?”  Some think it was because Adam’s original sin has been passed down to humanity through sinful parents.  They say Jesus, To Be Free Of Sin, Needed To Circumvent The Natural Method And Be Conceived In A SUPERNATURAL WAY.  More likely, Jesus’ Birth, A MIRACULOUS BIRTH TO A SEXUALLY PURE YOUNG WOMAN, SERVED TO UNDERSCORE HIS SUPERNATURAL BEGINNING—A SIGN OF HIS DIVINITY.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v18-25, Let Us Look To The Circumstances Under Which The Son Of God Entered Into This Lower World, till we learn to despise the vain honours of this world, when compared with Piety (Reverence) and Holiness.  The Mystery Of Christ’s Becoming Man Is To be Adored, not curiously inquired into.  It Was So Ordered That Christ Should Partake Of Our Nature, Yet That He Should Be Pure From The Defilement Of Original Sin, Which Has Been Communicated To All The Race of Adam.  Observe, it is the thoughtful, not the unthinking, whom God Will Guide.  God’s Time To Come With Instruction To His people, Is When They Are At A Loss.  Divine Comforts Delight (Most) The Soul When Under The Pressure Of perplexed Thoughts.  Joseph Is Told That Mary Should Bring Forth The Saviour Of The World.  He Was To Call His Name JESUS, A SAVIOUR.  JESUS Is The Same Name With Joshua.  And The Reason Of That NAME Is Clear, For Those Whom CHRIST SAVES, HE SAVES FROM THEIR SINS; From The Guilt Of Sin BY THE MERIT OF HIS DEATH (ON THE CROSS), And From The Power Of Sin By THE SPIRIT OF HIS GRACE.  In Saving Them From Sin, He Saves Them From Wrath And The Curse, And All Misery, Here and Here-After.  Christ Came To Save His People, Not In Their Sins, But From Their Sins, And So TO REDEEM THEM FROM AMONG men, To HIMSELF, WHO IS SEPARATE FROM SINNERS.  Joseph did as the Angel Of The Lord Had Bidden Him, Speedily, Without Delay, And Cheerfully, Without Dispute.  By Applying The General Rules Of The Written Word, We Should In All The Steps Of Our Lives, Particularly The Great Turns Of Them, Take Direction From God, And We Shall Find This Safe And Comfortable.  Amen.

“Zachariah’s Song,” cont’d, Luke 1:78) Through The Tender Mercy Of Our God; Whereby The Dayspring From On High Hath Visited Us,  Numbers 24:17;  79) To Give Light to them that Sit In Darkness and in The Shadow of Death, To Guide our feet Into The Way Of Peace.  Isaiah 9:2.  80) And the child grew, and waxed Strong in Spirit, and was in the deserts till The Day of his Shewing Unto Israel.

Quest Study Bible – v80, “Why did John live in the desert?”   The harsh climate may have helped to Focus his Attention On God.  Being separated from the economic and political powers of his day allowed him to speak his Words of Judgment More Freely.  His chosen lifestyle also distinguished him from other religious leaders who enjoyed living near the halls of power.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v78, Through The Tender Mercy Of Our God,  or “Bowels Of Mercy”, to which the Forgiveness of Sin is Owing; the Source and Spring of Pardon, is The Free Grace And Abundant Mercy Of God; It Takes Its Rise From Thence, though It Is Channeled In The Blood And Sacrifice Of Christ; and which no way derogates from, but rather Heightens The Riches Of God’s Grace And Mercy: for it was Mercy That Moved God To Enter Into A Covenant With His Son, In Which Forgiveness Of Sin Is Promised; and It Was Mercy To Set Forth His Son, In His Eternal Purposes and Decrees; and To Send Him Forth In The Fullness Of Time, To Shed His Blood For The Remission Of Sins; It Was The Mercy Of God To Us, THAT PROVIDED A LAMB FOR A BURNT OFFERING, AND THEN ACCEPTED OF THE SACRIFICE AND SATISFACTION OF HIS SON, IN OUR ROOM AND STEAD, AND FORGAVE ALL OUR SINS, FOR HIS SAKE; and whatever The Pardon Of Our Sins Cost God And Christ, It Is All Free Grace And Mercy To Us: it is owing not to The Absolute Mercy Of God, or to The Mercy Of God As An Absolute God, But To The Mercy Of “Our” God; Our God In Christ, Our Covenant God And Father: n the word (anatolh) , e here used, and is translated “The Day Spring”, is the same which the Septuagint use, in   ( Jeremiah 23:5 )  ( Zechariah 3:8 ) ( 6:12 ) wherThe Messiah Is Spoken Of, Under The Name Of The “branch”: and Undoubtedly The Messiah Jesus, is intended here, Who Is The Man, That branch, That Has grown Up Out Of His Place; not from below, But From Above; And Who Is The Phosphorus, Or Bringer Of Light, That Bright And Morning Star, That Son Of Righteousness, Who Has Light In Himself, and Communicates Light To Others; even Light Natural, Spiritual, and Eternal; and with His Rays and Beams of Light, Life, And Love, Refreshes, Exhilarates, and Warms, The Hearts of His People: and by the “Visit” He Has Made in o, Whose Bowels Yearned Towards Us, and Whose Pity Is That Of A Tender Parent: whereby  The Dayspring From On High Visited Us:  The word  (anatolh) here used, and is translated “The Day Spring”, is the same which the Septuagint use, in   ( Jeremiah 23:5 )  ( Zechariah 3:8 ) ( 6:12 ) where The Messiah Is Spoken Of, Under The Name Of The “branch”:  and Undoubtedly The Messiah Jesus, is intended here, Who Is The Man, That branch, That Has grown Up Out Of His Place; not from below, But From Above; And Who Is The Phosphorus, Or Bringer Of Light, That Bright And Morning Star, That Son Of Righteousness, Who Has Light In Himself, and Communicates Light To Others; even Light Natural, Spiritual, and Eternal; and with His Rays and Beams of Light, Life, And Love, Refreshes, Exhilarates, and Warms, The Hearts of His People: and by the “Visit” He Has Made in our, “horizon”, Is Meant His Assumption of Human Nature; which, like a friendly visit, Proceeded From Pure Love To The Children of God; and was A Drawing Near unto them, for it was A Taking on Him their nature, in which He Represented their persons; and was Done through much Difficulty and Great Condescension, Since He Was In The Form Of God, And Thought It Not Robbery (He Was Not Selfish Because Of His Likeness To God) To Be Equal With HIM (GOD); and His Stay on earth in this nature, was but for a little while; so that on all accounts, It may be Truly Called A “Visit”: and which, as the Remission Of Sin Is Wholly Owing To The Tender Mercy Of Our God, Who Put Him Upon It (The Sacrifice For The Remission Of Our Sin), Called Him To It, Sent Him Forth Made of a woman, and In The Likeness of sinful flesh, To Obtain Eternal Redemption, In Which Mercy and Truth Met Together: the End and Design of this Visit, are Signified in the next verse; for the following words belong to The Dayspring From On High, and not to John the Prophet of The Highest.   v79, To Give Light to them that sit in darkness  God’s elect among the Jews, who were not only in a state of unregeneracy, which is a state of darkness, ignorance, and unbelief; but in the darkness of the legal dispensation, and at this time under more than ordinary darkness and ignorance; having lost The Knowledge Of The Righteousness Of God, and of The Spirituality Of His Law, The True Sense Of The Scriptures, and Right Notions Of The Messiah; being led by blind guides, the Scribes and Pharisees;  and, were as it were also,  in the shadow of death;  in a state seemingly irrecoverable, when Christ, The Great Light Arose, and Shone Upon Them; and Communicated Spiritual Light, Life, and Heat unto them; see  (Isaiah 9:2)  compared with                  (Matthew 4:13-16 ) Though Christ Is Also A Light, To Lighten His Chosen Ones Among The Gentiles, ( Luke 2:32 ) but the Jews seem chiefly to be intended here:  To Guide our feet Into The Way Of Peace;  which we knew not: not that He Came To Teach us How To Make our Peace With God, but To Make Peace For Us, BY THE BLOOD OF HIS CROSS; and So By His Spirit And Word, Lead us Into The True Way Of Enjoying Spiritual Peace Here, and Eternal Peace Hereafter.  v80, And the child grew, and waxed strong in Spirit  That is, John, the son of Zacharias and Elisabeth, grew in stature of body, and increased in Wisdom and Knowledge, and Fortitude in his Soul:  and was in the deserts;  or “desert”, as the Syriac, Persic, and Ethiopic versions read; not in the wilderness of Judea, where he came Preaching, but either of Ziph or Maon, which were near to Hebron; see ( 1 Samuel 23:14 1 Samuel 23:24 1 Samuel 23:25 ) ( Joshua 15:54 Joshua 15:55 ) he was not brought up in the schools of the Prophets, nor in the academies of the Jews, or at the feet of any of their Rabbins and doctors; that it might appear he was not taught and sent of men, But Of God: nor did he dwell in any of the cities, or larger towns, but in deserts; partly that he might be fitted for that Gravity and Austerity (Sternness and Severity) of life, he was to appear in; and that it might be clear he had no Knowledge of (What Jesus Was Doing), nor Correspondence with Jesus, Whose Forerunner He Was, and Of Whom He Was To Bear Testimony, Till Such Time He Did It (Bear Testimony That He Is The Messiah); and in this solitude he remained,  till the day of his showing unto Israel;  either till the time came that he was to appear before, and be examined by the Sanhedrin, that judged of persons fitness and qualifications for the priesthood, in order to be admitted to it; which should have been when he was thirty years of age, but that he was designed for other service; or rather therefore till he appeared in his Prophetic Office, and showed himself to the people of Israel; to whom he came Preaching The Doctrine of Repentance and Remission of Sins, Administering The Ordinance of Baptism, Giving Notice Of The Near Approach Of The Messiah, And Pointing Him Out Unto The People.
