Psalm 84 is one of the Psalms of Zion.  These Psalms Celebrate GOD’S PRESENCE In Jerusalem, The City Where HIS TEMPLE Was Built.  The Psalm was composed by the sons of Korah (Psalm 42; 44-49; 85; 87; 88).  Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary.

Sons of Korah (84:title)  A choir of Levites that king David appointed to serve in The Temple Worship.  These were descendants of Korah, who was the grandson of Levi, the head of one of The Twelve Tribes of Israel.  The Levites were responsible for The Temple Worship.  Korah got into a dispute with Moses and was eventually swallowed alive by the ground (Numbers 16:1-33).  Quest Study Bible.

“How Amiable Are Thy Tabernacles,” III, Psalm 84:11) For The Lord God Is A Sun And Shield:  The Lord Will Give Grace And Glory:  No Good Thing Will HE Withhold From them that Walk Uprightly.  12) O Lord Of Hosts, Blessed is the man that Trusteth In Thee.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10-12, a day … a thousand:  Nothing in the pilgrim’s daily experience can be compared TO A DAY SPENT IN THE WORSHIP OF GOD IN THE HOLY TEMPLE.  A doorkeeper … dwell in tents:  The role of a menial servant in The House Of his God is more desirable than a life of luxury with those who practice wickedness.  No good thing Will HE Withhold:  This is an observation of a wise and Righteous person; time after time, GOD GIVES GOOD GIFTS TO HIS PEOPLE.

Quest Study Bible – v11, “How Is God Like A Shield?”  Ancient shields protected the body during warfare.  Likewise, God Protects His People From The Fiery Darts of the evil one, from fear and from the danger of the unknown.  v11, “Whose Walk Is Blameless,”  The walk of those who seek God’s Will.  This doesn’t imply perfection, but Undivided Loyalty.  No one is completely blameless Before The Lord since we’ve all sinned (53:1-3).  But When God Grants Forgiveness, we become blameless In His Sight.  See “How could David claim to be blameless?”  (26:1).

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v11, For The Lord God Is A Sun And Shield  Christ is “The Sun Of Righteousness”, And It Is In The House of God That He Arises Upon His People With Healing In His Wings, ( Malachi 4:2 ) He Is Like The Sun, THE GREAT LIGHT, THE FOUNTAIN OF LIGHT, THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD, That Dispels Darkness, Makes Day, And Give Light To All The Celestial Bodies, Moon, Stars, Church And Ministers; HE Is A “Sun” To Enlighten His People With The Light Of Grace, To Warm Them With The Beams Of HIS LOVE, To Cheer And Refresh Their Souls With The Light Of His Countenance, And To Make Them Fruitful And Flourishing And HE IS A “SHIELD” To Protect them from all their enemies; HE IS THE SHIELD OF FAITH, Against The Temptations Of Satan; HE IS THE SHIELD OF SALVATION, AND HIS SALVATION IS A SHIELD WHICH SHELTERS FROM DIVINE JUSTICE, AND SECURES FROM WRATH TO COME:  The Lord Will Give Grace And Glory:  HE Gives Converting Grace, The First Grace, And All Future Supplies Of It; HE GIVES SANCTIFYING GRACE, Faith, Hope, Love, And Every Other; HE Gives Justifying, Pardoning, Adopting, And Persevering Grace, AND ALL FREELY; HE Gives Honor And Glory Among Men, Fellow Creatures, And Fellow Christians; And HE GIVES ETERNAL GLORY, THE GLORY HIS FATHER GAVE HIM, THE CROWN OF GLORY, LIFE, AND RIGHTEOUSNESS:  THIS IS THE GIFT OF GOD THROUGH CHRIST; CHRIST Gives A Right Unto It; And In His House And Ordinances, AS HE GIVES MORE GRACE TO THE HUMBLE THAT WAIT UPON HIM, So HE Encourages And Increases Their HOPE OF GLORY; And HE That Gives The One Will Certainly Give The Other; For These Two Are Inseparably Connected Together, So That he That Has The One Shall Enjoy The Other:  no good thing will HE Withhold From Them That Walk Uprightly; That Walk By Faith, And In CHRIST, as they have Received HIM; who have their conversation according to The Gospel of Christ, and Walk In The Uprightness And Sincerity Of Their Hearts; From Such The Lord Will Not Withhold Any Good Thing HE Has Purposed For Them, Promised to them, or Laid Up for them in Covenant; No Spiritual Good Thing Appertaining To Life And Godliness, And No Temporal (Worldly, Temporary) Blessing that is good for them; HE WILL DENY THEM NO GOOD THING THEY ASK OF HIM, Not Anything That Is Good For Them; And HE WILL NOT DRAW BACK ANY GOOD THING HE HAS BESTOWED ON THEM, HIS GIFTS ARE WITHOUT REPENTANCE (REGRET).  Amen.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-12, In All Our Addesses To GOD, we must desire that HE WOULD LOOK ON CHRIST, HIS ANOINTED ONE, And Accept Us For HIS SAKE:  We Must Look To HIM WITH FAITH, AND THEN GOD WILL WITH FAVOR LOOK UPON THE FACE OF THE ANOINTED:  We, Without HIM, Dare Not Show Our Faces.  The Psalmist Pleads Love To GOD”S ORDINANCES.  Let Us Account One Day In God’s Courts Better Than A Thousand Elsewhere; And Deem The Meanest Place IN HIS SERVICE PREFERABLE TO THE HIGHEST EARTHLY PREFERMENT.  We are here in darkness, But If GOD BE OUR GOD, HE WILL BE TO US A SUN, TO ENLIGHTEN AND ENLIVEN US, TO GUIDE AND DIRECT US.  We are here in danger, But HE Will Be To Us A Shield, To Secure Us From The Fiery Darts That Fly Thick About Us.  Though HE Has Not Promised To Give Us Riches And Dignities, HE HAS PROMISED TO GIVE GRACE AND GLORY TO ALL THAT SEEK THEM IN HIS APPOINTED WAY.  And What Is Grace, But Heaven Begun Below, In The Knowledge, Love, And Service Of God?  What Is Glory, But The Completion Of This Happiness, In Being Made Like To HIM, And In Fully Enjoying HIM FOR EVER?  Let It Be Our Care To Walk Uprightly, And Then Let Us Trust GOD To Give Us Everything That Is Good For Us.  If We Cannot Go To The House Of THE LORD, We May Go By Faith To THE LORD Of The House; In HIM We Shall Be Happy, And May Be Easy.  That Man Is Really Happy, Whatever His Outward Circumstances May Be, Who Trusts In THE LORD OF HOSTS, THE GOD OF JACOB.  Amen.

“How Amiable Are Thy Tabernacles,” cont’d, Psalm 84:8) O Lord God Of Hosts, hear my Prayer:  give Ear, O God Of Jacob.  Selah.  9) Behold, O God our Shield, and Look upon the face of THINE Anointed.  Genesis 15:1.  10) For A Day In Thy Courts Is Better Than A Thousand.  I had rather be a doorkeeper in The In The House Of My GOD, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Nelson’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8, Lord God Of Hosts, literally “The God Of Armies,” speaks of God’s Transcendence (Existence, Supremacy).  The Hosts are the Angelic Armies of The Heavens.  This Title is balanced by the phrase God Of Jacob, Referring To The Covenant Relationship GOD Established With The Patriarchs of Israel.  v9, The two phrases our Shield and Your Anointed both point to the same Person, THE KING Of ISRAEL (89:3, 4).  Each person that was Anointed in The Old Testament foreshadowed The Coming Anointed One, THE MESSIAH.  v10-12, a day … a thousand:  Nothing in the pilgrim’s daily experience can be compared TO A DAY SPENT IN THE WORSHIP OF GOD IN THE HOLY TEMPLE.

Quest Study Bible – v9, “Who Is Their Shield?”  The Anointed One, the king in Jerusalem.  The word shield could also be translated sovereign (see NIV text note).  The king’s duty was to protect the people within his charge.  Perhaps the king was in some sort of danger when this Psalm was written.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v9, Behold, O God our Shield  Which may be considered either as the Character Of God, Who Is Addressed, Who Was David’s Shield, And The Shield Of HIS People, to Protect and Defend them from their enemies, and is The Shield of all the Saints; this Favor encompasses them as a Shield, and HIS TRUTH is their Shield and Buckler; HIS TRUTHFULNESS AND FAITHFULNESS, In Keeping Covenant And Promises; and so is HIS POWER, By Which They Are Kept Unto Salvation; see ( Psalms 3:3 ) ( 5:12 ) ( 91:4 ) , or else it belongs to other persons and things the psalmist desires God Would Behold, in agreement with the following clause. Jarchi interprets it of The House Of The Sanctuary, as a Shield unto them; much better Aben Ezra of the king their protector; and makes the sense of the petition to be, that God would save our king; it Is Best To Apply It To CHRIST, Afterwards Called A SUN and SHIELD; see on ( Psalms 84:11 ) , and to WHOM the following clause belongs:  and look upon the face of THINE Anointed;  meaning either HIMSELF, David, The Anointed of THE GOD OF JACOB, who was Anointed with oil, in a literal sense, king of Israel, by the appointment and order of THE LORD HIMSELF; and his request is, that GOD WOLD LOOK UPON his OUTWARD STATE AND CONDITION,  which was a distressed and an afflicted one, with an eye of Pity and Compassion, he being deprived of Sanctuary Worship and Service, and of THE PRESENCE OF GOD THERE; see        ( Psalms 132:1 ) or rather he has a view to THE MESSIAH. THE LORD’S CHRIST, or Anointed, the anointed Prophet, Priest, and King, anointed with the Oil of Gladness, THE GRACE OF THE SPIRIT, without measure; and so the sense is, that though he and his petitions were unworthy of notice, yet he entreats that GOD WOULD LOOK UPON HIS SON THE MESSIAH, and for HIS SAKE HEAR AND ANSWER him; LOOK UPON HIS PERSON, and accept him IN HIM, THE BELOVED; UPON HIS FUTURE OBEDIENCE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND IMPUTE IT TO him; UPON HIS SUFFERINGS, AND DEATH HE WAS TO ENDURE, TO SAVE him from his sins; UPON HIS BLOOD TO BE SHED FOR THE REMISSION OF THEM, AS HE HAD LOOKED UPON THE BLOOD OF THE PASSOVER, UPON THE DOORPOSTS Of The Israelites, And Saved Them WHEN HE DESTROYED THE FIRSTBORN OF EGYPT; AND UPON HIS SACRIFICE, WHICH IS OF A SWEET SMELLING SAVOR; AND UPON HIS FULLNESS, For The Supply Of His Wants. Kimchi takes it to be a Prayer For The Speedy COMING OF THE MESSIAH.

Amen.

“How Amiable Are Thy Tabernacles,” Psalm 84:1) How Amiable Are Thy Tabernacles, O LORD Of HOSTS!  Hebrews 9:24, 24.  2) My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for The Courts Of The Lord:  my heart and my flesh crieth out for The Living God.  3) Yea, the sparrow hath found an house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, Even Thine Altars, O Lord Of Hosts, my King, and my God.  4) Blessed Are They That Dwell In THY HOUSE:  they will be Still (Ever) Praising Thee.  Selah.  5) Blessed is the man whose strength is in Thee; in whose heart are the ways of Them (The Ways Of God) (or, set their hearts on pilgrimage).  6) Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well (valley of Weeping); the rain also filleth the pools.  7) They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, 2, Tabernacle is used here as a poetic term for The Temple that was built by Solomon.  The Living God:  All other “gods” are nonentities; But He Who Created The Universe, Who Chose Israel As HIS People, And Who Provided Salvation For The World Lives For Ever In Great Glory.  v3, 4, sparrow … swallow:  By describing the approach of birds to the Courtyards of The Temple, the psalmist expresses his own great Joy.  v5-7, The phrase whose heart is set on pilgrimage (or, in whose heart  are the ways of them (The Ways Of God)) refers to those that make their way to The Temple not out of obligation, but out of a wellspring of Joy.  The Valley of Baca, or “Valley of Weeping,” refers to the various difficulties that one might face on pilgrimage.  The person on the pilgrimage might discover that the once-dark valley is filled with springs, rain, and pools—all Signs Of God’s Blessing.  strength to strength:  As one nears The Temple, the rigors of the journey become tolerable, for the Joy of The Approaching Arrival Strengthens The Soul.

Quest Study Bible –  v1, “Where Does God Live?”  See “Where Does God Live?”  (Micah 1:3).  v2, “Why was the psalmist so homesick for The Temple?”  The writer was probably someone that normally served in The Temple but was prevented from doing so for some reason.  Perhaps the Psalm was written when Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, was threatening The Temple in Jerusalem.  Or it might refer to being in captivity in another country.  v6, “Valley of Baca,”  The meaning is uncertain.  It may refer to a valley of balsam trees that grow in dry areas.  Or it might be an imaginary valley full of dryness and sorrow.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, The Ordinances Of GOD Are The Believer’s Solace In This Evil World; In Them he enjoys The Presence Of The Living GOD:  this causes him to regret his absence from Them.  They are to his soul as the nest to the bird.  Yet They Are Only An Ernest (Example) Of The Happiness Of Heaven; but how can men desire to enter that Holy Habitation, who complain of Divine Ordinances as wearisome?  Those are truly happy, who go forth, and go in the exercise of Religion, In The Strength Of Jesus Christ, From Whom All our Sufficiency Is.  The pilgrims (going) to The Heavenly City may have to pass through many a valley of weeping, and many a thirsty desert; But Wells Of Salvation Shall Be Opened For Them, And Consolations Sent For Their Support.  Those That Press Forward In Their Christian Course, Shall Find GOD Add(ing) More) Grace To Their Graces.  And Those That Grow In Grace, Shall Be Perfect In Glory.  Amen.

Fret – Worry

Psalm 37 – Is a Wisdom Psalm written as a Acrostic (a poem, word puzzle).  Its simple message is to Maintain Patience In The Midst Of Troubles.  God’s People can have such Patience because they know that their Eternal Reward Will Abundantly Surpass Any Temporal Troubles.  Amen.

“Fret Not Thyself Because of Evil Doers,”  Vll, Psalm 34:35) I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.  36) Yet he passed away, and lo, he was not:  yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.  37) Mark the Perfect man, and behold the Upright:  for the end of that man is Peace.  2 Timothy 4:6-8.  38) But the transgressors shall be destroyed together:  The End Of The Wicked Shall Be Cut Off.  39) But The Salvation Of The Righteous Is Of THE LORD:  HE IS THEIR STRENGTH IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE.  Isaiah 12:2; Jonah 2:9.  40) And THE LORD Shall Help Them:  HE SHALL DELIVER THEM FROM THE WICKED AND SAVE THEM, BECAUSE THEY TRUST IN HIM.  Amen.  1 Chronicles 5:20; Daniel 3:47.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v32-35, To WAIT ON THE LORD Is An Act Of FAITH; Not To Wait On HIM IS FOOLISHNESS.  like a native green tree:  David admits that the wicked might prosper, but he also affirms that they will not enjoy success forever.  v36, 37 In this context Peace suggests “everything is as it ought to be.”  The Destiny Of The Righteous Is In Sharp Contrast To The Fate Of The Wicked (1:4-6).  v38-40, SALVATION:  The Principal Issue Here Is Not Regeneration But SANCTIFICATION—The Daily Deliverance Of GOD’S People From Temptation And Evil.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v34-40, Duty is ours, and we must mind it; But Events Are GOD’S, we must refer the disposal of them to HIM.  What a striking picture is in ver. 35-36, of many a prosperous enemy of GOD!  But GOD Remarkably Blights The Projects Of The Prosperous Wicked, Especially Persecutors.  None are perfect in themselves, but Believers Are So In Christ Jesus.  If All The Saint’s Days Continue Dark And Cloudy, his Dying Day May Prove Comfortable, And His Sun Set Bright; or, if it should be set under a cloud, Yet his Future State Will Be EVERLASTING PEACE.  THE SALVATION OF THE RIGHTEOUS WILL BE THE LORD’S DOING.  HE WILL HELP THEM TO DO THEIR DUTIES, TO BEAR THEIR BURDENS; HELP THEM TO BEAR THEIR TROUBLES WELL, AND GET GOOD BY THEM, AND, IN DUE TIME, WILL DELIVER THEM OUT OF THEIR TROUBLES.  Let sinners then depart from evil, and do good; Repent of and Forsake Sin, AND TRUST IN THE MERCY OF GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.  Let Them Take HIS YOKE Upon Them, And Learn Of HIM, That They May Dwell For Evermore In Heaven.  Let us mark the closing scenes of different characters, and always depend on GOD’S MERCY.  Amen.

“Fret Not Thyself Because of Evil Doers,”  VI, Psalm 37:29) The Righteous Shall Inherit The Land, And Dwell Therein For Ever.  30) The mouth of the Righteous speaketh Wisdom, and his tongue talketh of Judgment.  31) The Law Of his GOD Is In his Heart; none of his Steps Shall Slide.  32) The wicked watcheth the Righteous, and seeketh to slay him.  33) THE LORD Will Not Leave him In his (the wicked’s) hand, NOR CONDEMN him (the Righteous) When he Is Judged.   Psalm 109:31.  34) Wait On THE LORD, And Keep HIS WAY, And HE SHALL EXALT THEE To Inherit The Land:  When The Wicked Are Cut Off, Thou Shalt See It.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v26-29, The same Command to Depart From Evil is found in 34:14.  In this life people must chose to either Cling To GOD And Righteousness, or to pursue evil.  THE WAY OF GOD LEADS TO EVERLASTING LIFE.  THE LORD LOVES JUSTICE:  Because GOD Stands Opposed To Injustice, GOD”S People Ought To Love The Things That HE Loves And Detest The Things That HE Hates.  v30, 31, in his heart:  At numerous places in the Psalms, the Psalmist declares his Love For GOD”S LAW and his effort to make it integral to his life (1:2; 19:7-11; 119:1-176).  v32-35, To WAIT ON THE LORD Is An Act Of FAITH; Not To Wait On HIM IS FOOLISHNESS.  like a native green tree:  David admits that the wicked might prosper, but he also affirms that they will not enjoy success forever.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v21-33, THE LORD Our GOD Requires That We Do Justly, and render to all their due.  It is a great sin for those that are able, to deny the payment of just debts; it is a great misery not to be able to pay them.  He that is Truly Merciful, will be Ever Merciful.  We Must Leave Our Sins; Learn To Do Well, And Cleave To It.  This Is True Religion.  The Blessing Of GOD Is The Spring, Sweetness, And Security Of All Earthly Enjoyments.  And if we are sure of This, we are sure not to want any thing in this world.  BY HIS GRACE AND HOLY SPIRIT, HE DIRECTS THE THOUGHTS, AFFECTIONS, AND DESIGNS OF GOOD MEN.  BY HIS PROVIDENCE HE OVERRULES EVENTS, SO AS TO MAKE THEIR WAY PLAIN.  HE DOES NOT ALWAYS SHOW THEM HIS WAY FOR A DISTANCE, BUT LEADS THEM STEP BY STEP, AS CHILDREN ARE LED.  GOD WILL KEEP THEM FROM BEING RUINED BY HEIR FALLS, EITHER INTO SIN OR INTO TROUBLE, THOUGH SUCH AS FALL INTO SIN WILL BE SORELY HURT.  Few, if any, have known the Consistent Believer, or HIS Children, reduced to abject, friendless want.  GOD FORSAKES NOT HIS SAINTS IN AFFLICTION; AND IN HEAVEN ONLY THE RIGHTEOUS SHALL DWELL FOR EVER; THAT WILL BE THEIR EVERLASTING HABITATION.  A good man may fall into the hands of a messenger of Satan, and be sorely buffeted, BUT GOD WILL NOT LEAVE him IN his ENEMIES HANDS.  v34-40, Duty is ours, and we must mind it; But Events Are GOD’S, we must refer the disposal of them to HIM. Amen.

“Fret Not Thyself Because of Evil Doers,” V, Psalm 37:21) The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again:  but the Righteous Sheweth Mercy, and Giveth.  22) For such as be Blessed Of HIM Shall Inherit The Earth; and they that be Cursed Of HIM Shall Be Cut Off.  Proverbs 3:33.  23) The steps of a good man are Ordered By THE LORD:   And HE Delighteth in his way.  Psalm 121:3.  24) Though he fall, he shall not be Utterly Cast Down:  For THE LORD Upholdeth him With HIS HAND.  Micah 7:8; 2 Corinthians 4:9.  25) I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the Righteous Forsaken, Nor HIS Seed Begging Bread.  26) HE Is Ever Merciful, And Lendeth; And HIS Seed Is Blessed.  27) Depart from evil, And Do Good; And Dwell Forevermore.  28) For THE LORD Loveth Judgment, And Forsaketh Not HIS Saints; They Are Preserved For Ever; but the seed of the wicked Shall Be Cut Off.  Psalm 11:7.

Quest  Study Bible – v3-25, “If we Trust In God, are we guaranteed safety?”   This is a General Promise, not a Specific one.  Safe pasture (v. 3, NIV) sounds like physical safety, but other Passages in The Bible suggest a Broader Interpretation.  We can conclude that Spiritual Safety Is Always Guaranteed Even If Physical Safety Sometimes Is Not.  The Bible speaks not only of those who were saved from physical threats, but also of those who were not.  The Book of Hebrews recounts the stories of nameless martyrs (11:35-38), And JESUS TOLD HIS FOLLOWERS THAT SOME WOULD BE KILLED (John 16:2).  EVEN JESUS EXPERIENCED PHYSICAL SUFFERING AND DEATH.  Throughout history, many Righteous people have tragically lost their lives.  GOD Did Not Always Rescue Them.  Members of the early Church were tortured and died cruel deaths.  Such maltreatment has continued even into the present.  Some point out that more died as Christian Martyrs in the twentieth century than in any previous century.  The writer of this Psalm had seen the wicked thrive and the Righteous Suffer.  But in spite of that, he still could speak of Safety For The Righteous because he Chose To Focus On GOD And HIS Goodness.  Though the reasons behind life’s tragedies often remain a mystery, the psalmist, By Faith, could assert that GOD WOULD NOT ABANDON HIS PEOPLE.  Amen.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v21-23, The Righteous Show Mercy:  There are many contrasts between the wicked and the Righteous in the Wisdom Psalms; this one is based on contrasting attitudes toward possessions (15:5; 112:5).  Of All The Things On The Earth That GOD HAS CREATED, Only One Will Last—People.  ALL MATERIAL THINGS WILL PASS AWAY (2 Peter 3:10-12).  v24, upholds him:  The Righteous know that when they fall, they are never left lying there; when they stumble, they are never Completely Forsaken.  v25, begging bread:  These Words may be viewed from two perspectives:  (1) The hunger of the Righteous is temporary and will be replaced by fullness in the days to come; and (2) There is a hunger that the Righteous never need to suffer:  They Are Never Deprived Of THE LORD’S PRESENCE  (see John 6:35).  Perhaps this is also a Call To Help The Righteous When They Do Suffer Hunger In The World.  v26-29, The same Command to Depart From Evil is found in 34:14.

Amen.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v13-17, THE LORD LAUGHS:  These words recall the Scornful Laughter in (Psalm) 2:4.  What sheer horror for the wicked to hear GOD”S LAUGHTER Directed Against Them!  Contrast This Laughter With The Delight That THE LORD Finds In The Ways Of The Righteous (v. 23).  v18-20, The Phrase THE LORD KNOWS THE DAYS OF THE UPRIGHT has several meanings;  (1) GOD KNOWS Our Circumstances And Provides For Us;  (2) GOD KNOWS How Long We Will Live And Will Sustain Us Until The End (90:12);  (3) GOD KNOWS THAT OUR DAYS ON EARTH Are Only The Beginning Of Our Days WITH HIM IN ETERNITY.

Quest Study Bible – v20, “Perish … vanish like smoke,”  See Cut off (37:9).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v7-20, Let us be satisfied that GOD Will Make All To Work For Good To Us.  Let us not discompose (disturb or agitate) ourselves at what we see in this world.  A Fretful, discontented spirit is open to many temptations.  For, in all respects, (that) which is alloted to the Righteous, is more comfortable and more profitable than the ill-gotten and abused riches of ungodly men.  It comes from a Hand Of Special LOVE.  God Provides Plentifully And Well, Not Only For HIS Working Servants, But For HIS Waiting Servants.  They Have That Which Is Better Than Wealth, PEACE OF MIND, PEACE WITH GOD, AND THEN PEACE IN GOD, THAT PEACE WHICH THE WORLD CANNOT GIVE, AND WHICH THE WORLD CANNOT HAVE.  GOD KNOWS THE BELIEVERS DAYS.  Not One Day’s Work Shall Go Unrewarded.  Their Time On Earth Is Reckoned (Counted) By Days, Which Will Soon Be Numbered, But Heavenly Happiness Shall Be For Ever.  This Will Be A Real Support To Believers In Evil Times.  Those That Rest On THE ROCK OF AGES (That Rock Is JESUS), Have No Reason To Envy The Wicked The Support Of Their Broken Reeds (Something relied on for support).

“Fret Not Thyself Because of Evil Doers,” III, Psalm 37:8) Cease from anger, and forsake wrath:  fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.  Ephesians 4:26.  9) For evildoers shall be cut off:  but those that Wait Upon THE LORD, they shall inherit the earth.  10) For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:  yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place (though you look for them), and it shall not be.  11) But the Meek (Obedient) shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the Abundance Of Peace.  12) The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.  13) THE LORD Shall Laugh at him:  For HE SEETH that his day is coming.  1 Samuel 26:10.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v7, 8, Rest … wait patiently:  These Commands reemphasize the Major Point of the Psalm, “do not fret (or Fret not thyself)” (v. 1).  This is not a call to be inactive, but to depend actively on THE LIVING LORD.  The Psalm gives a Commandment to Cease From Worry.  v9-12, the meek shall inherit the earth:  JESUS Quoted these words in Matthew 5:5, Confirming The Old Testament And Showing The Importance Of The Psalms In HIS LIFE.  v13-17, THE LORD LAUGHS:  These words recall the Scornful Laughter in (Psalm) 2:4.  What sheer horror for the wicked to hear GOD”S LAUGHTER Directed Against Them!  Contrast This Laughter With The Delight That THE LORD Finds In The Ways Of The Righteous (v. 23).

Quest Study Bible – v9, “Cut Off,” A common figure of speech to describe (1) the breaking off of a relationship, as in excomunicating, or alienating someone from the community; or, (2) A Sentence Of DIVINE JUDGMENT which eliminated someone by execution.   v9, “What was the significance of inheriting land?”  Land in the Old Testament symbolized more than just a piece of property.  It Often Represented The Blessing And PRESENCE OF GOD.  GOD’S PROMISE Is That One Day The Tables Will Be Turned:  those who are well off (,) may not be in the future; those who suffer will one day be comforted.  Ultimately The Righteous Will Be Rewarded And The Wicked Will Be Brought To Ruin.  JESUS MADE THE SAME POINT IN SAYING THAT THE MEEK WILL INHERIT THE EARTH (Obedient) (Matthew 5:5).   v12, “Gnash their teeth,”  See “What does it mean to gnash teeth?”  (112:10).

“Fret Not Thyself Because of Evil Doers,” cont’d, Psalm 37:7) Rest In THE LORD, And Wait Patiently For HIM:  fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass (be silent to The Lord).

“Fret Not Thyself Because of Evil Doers,” Psalm 37:1) Fret Not Thyself Because Of Evil Doers, neither be thou be thou envious against the workers of iniquity (wickedness).  2) For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.  3) Trust In THE LORD, And Do Good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.  4) Delight thyself also in THE LORD; And HE Shall Give Thee The Desires Of Thine Heart.  Song of Solomon 2;3.  5) Commit thy way unto THE LORD; Trust Also In HIM; And HE Shall Bring It To Pass.  6) And HE Shall Bring Forth thy Righteousness as the light, thy Judgment as the noonday.

Amen.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1-4, Do no fret (Fret Not Thyself) is the theme of this Psalm.  When the wicked seem to prosper, the psalmist calls for Patience, A Renewed Sense of Dependence On THE LORD, and a new sense of Pleasure In Knowing HIM.  v5, 6, To commit your way means to “to roll it over on THE LORD (or, to give it to THE LORD).”  What a splendid picture of TRUSTING IN HIM.

Quest Study Bible – v4, “Does GOD give us anything we desire?”  But HE Will Give Us Our Desire When They Are Shaped By A Delight In THE LORD.  To receive this Promise, we must first meet The Conditions Attached To IT:  BY LOVING GOD ABOVE ALL ELSE, our desires will become WHAT HE DESIRES FOR US.  Then Our Greatest Longing Will Be To Conform Our Lives To HIS WILL.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-6,  When We Look Abroad We See The World Full Of Evil-Doers, that flourish and live in ease.  So it was seen of old,  therefore let us not marvel at the matter.  We are tempted to Fret in this; to think them the only happy people, and so we are prone to do like them:  but this we are warned against.  Outward prosperity is fading.  When we look forward, with an Eye Of Faith, we shall see no reason to envy the wicked.  Their weeping and wailing will be Everlasting.  THE LIFE OF RELIGION IS A BELIEVING TRUST IN THE LORD, AND DILIGENT CARE TO SERVE HIM ACCORDING TO HIS WILL.  It is not Trusting GOD, but Tempting HIM, if we do not make Conscience Of Our Duty To HIM.  A man’s life consists not in abundance, but, Thou Shalt Have Food Convenient For Thee.  This is more than we deserve, and it is enough for one that is going to Heaven.  To Delight In GOD Is As Much A Privilege As A Duty.  He Has Not Promised To Gratify The Appetites Of The Body, and the humors of the fancy, But The Desires Of The Renewed Sanctified Soul.  What is the desire of the heart of a good man?  It Is This, To Know, And Love, And Serve GOD.  Commit Thy Way Unto THE LORD, The Burden Of Thy Care.  We must roll it off ourselves, not afflict and perplex ourselves with thoughts about future events, but refer them to GOD.  By Prayer Spread Thy Case And All Thy Cares Before THE LORD, And TRUST IN HIM.  We Must Do Our Duty, And Then Leave The Event With GOD.  The Promise Is Very Sweet.  He Shall Bring That To Pass, Whatever It Is, Which Thou Has Committed To Him.
