“Glory To The Lamb,” Geoffrey Golden

“THE SUFFERING AND THE GLORY OF THE SERVANT,” cont’d, Isaiah 53:1) WHO HATH BELIEVED OUR REPORT:  AND TO WHOM IS THE ARM OF THE LORD REVEALED?  2) FOR HE SHALL GROW UP BEFORE him AS A TENDER PLANT, AND AS A ROCK OUT OF A DRY GROUND.  HE HATH NO FORM NOR COMELINESS; AND WHEN WE SHALL SEE HIM THERE IS NO BEAUTY THAT WE SHOULD DESIRE HIM.  Mark 9:12.  3) HE IS DESPISED AND REJECTED OF MEN; A MAN OF SORROWS, AND ACQUAINTED WITH GRIEF, AND WE HID AS IT WERE OUR FACES FROM HIM; HE WAS DESPISED, AND WE ESTEEMED HIM NOT.  John 1:10.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, Who Has Believed;  The word report is related to the verb “they heard” in 52:15.  Our refers to the Believing Remnant in Israel.  Arm refers to God’s Great Work (40:10; 52:10; Psalm 118:22, 23).  v2, A Root Out Of Dry Ground suggests Christ’s Rejection By Israel (49:4; 50:6).  No Form Or Comeliness Indicates That The Servant Did Not Have A Majestic Manner.  v3, He Is Despised And Rejected:  For related references Describing The Rejection Of The Servant, see 42:2; 49:7; 50:6 (compare Mark 9:12).  Man Of Sorrows:  Because He Is A “Man Of Sorrows,” He Is Able To Comfort Those That Experience Sorrow.

Quest Study Bible – v1, SCRIPTURE LINK, See John 12:38; Romans 10:16.  John and Paul both quote this Verse as they show that many Jews did not believe The Good News About Christ.  v2, “Who is Isaiah describing?”    This could be the nation (or Faithful Remnant) of Israel, but it become clearer that Isaiah is describing an Individual, The Messiah, Who Would Bear The Sins Of The World.  The Surprise Is That The Individual Is So Vulnerable—A Tender Shoot … A Root Out Of Dry Ground.  It Is Amazing That God Could Work Through Tiny Israel And Even More So Through A Lowly Carpenter.

MATTHEW HENRY’S CONCISE BIBLE COMMENTARY – v1-3, NO WHERE IN ALL THE OLD TESTAMENT IS IT SO PLAINLY AND FULLY PROPHESIED, THAT CHRIST OUGHT TO SUFFER, AND THEN TO ENTER INTO HIS GLORY, AS IN THIS CHAPTER.  BUT TO THIS DAY FEW DISCERN, OR WILL ACKNOWLEDGE, THAT DIVINE POWER WHICH GOES WITH THE WORD.   THE AUTHENTIC AND MOST IMPORTANT REPORT OF SALVATION FOR SINNERS, THROUGH THE SON OF GOD, IS DISREGARDED.  THE LOW CONDITION HE SUBMITTED TO, AND HIS APPEARANCE IN THE WORLD, WERE NOT AGREEABLE TO THE IDEAS THE JEWS HAD FORMED OF THE MESSIAH.  IT WAS EXPECTED THAT HE SHOULD COME IN POMP; INSTEAD OF THAT, HE GREW AS A PLANT, SILENTLY, AND (HUMBLE).  HE HAD NOTHING OF THE GLORY WHICH ONE MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT TO MEET WITH HIM.  HIS WHOLE LIFE WAS NOT ONLY HUMBLE AS TO OUTWARD CONDITION, BUT ALSO SORROWFUL.  BEING MAD SIN FOR US, HE UNDERWENT THE SENTENCE SIN HAD EXPOSED US TO.  CARNAL HEARTS SEE NOTHING IN THE LORD JESUS TO DESIRE AN INTEREST IN HIM.  ALAS!  BY HOW MANY IS HE STILL DESPISED IN HIS PEOPLE, AND REJECTED AS TO HIS DOCTRINE (BELIEFS AND TEACHINGS) AND AUTHORITY.
