“I Feel Like Going On,” Bishop Marvin Winans

Psalm 105, A Psalm of Praise (compare Psalm 113), focuses on the positive experiences of Israel in their early history.  Contrast Psalm 106, which reviews the same period of history but with an emphasis on the faithlessness of the people.  This Poem Celebrates GOD’S FAITHFULNESS TO HIS COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM IN THE LIVES OF HIS PEOPLE.  The People Needed To Remember To Be FAITHFUL TO GOD, WHO HAD NEVER FORGOTTEN TO BE FAITHFUL TO THEM.  Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary.

“O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD,” III, Psalm 105:24) And HE (GOD) INCREASED HIS PEOPLE GREATLY; AND MADE THEM STRONGER THAN THEIR ENEMIES.  25) HE TURNED their heart to hate HIS PEOPLE, to deal subtilly with HIS Servants.  26) HE SENT MOSES HIS Servant; And Aaron Whom HE Had Chosen.  27) They Shewed HIS SIGNS Among them, And WONDERS in the land of Ham.  28) HE SENT DARKNESS, And Made It Dark; and they rebelled not against HIS WORD.  Psalm 99:7.  29) HE TURNED THEIR WATERS INTO BLOOD, AND SLEW THEIR FISH.  30) Their land brought forth Frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings.  31) HE SPAKE, and there came divers sorts of Flies, and Lice in all their coasts.  32) HE GAVE them Hail for rain, and Flaming Fire in their land.  33) HE SMOTE their Vines also and Fig Trees, and Brake the trees of their coasts.  34) HE SPAKE, and the Locusts came, and Caterpillars, and that without number,  35) And did Eat Up All The Herbs in their land, and Devoured the Fruit of their ground.  36) HE SMOTE ALSO THE FIRSTBORN IN THEIR LAND, the Chief of all their strength.  Genesis 49:3.  37) HE BROUGHT THEM FORTH (THE ISRAELITES) Also With Silver And Gold” And There Was Not One Feeble Person Among Their Tribes.  38) Egypt was glad when they departed:  For The FEAR Of Them Fell Upon Them.  39) HE SPREAD A CLOUD FOR A COVERING; AND FIRE TO GIVE LIGHT IN THE NIGHT.  40) The people asked, and HE Brought Quails, and Satisfied them with The Bread Of Heaven.  Exodus 16:12.  41) HE OPENED THE ROCK, And The Waters Gushed Out, They (The Waters) Ran In The Dry Places Like A River.  42) FOR HE REMEMBERED HIS HOLY PROMISE, AND ABRAHAM HIS SERVANT.  Genesis 15;4.  43) AND HE BROUGHT FORTH HIS PEOPLE WITH JOY, AND HIS CHOSEN WITH GLADNESS:  44) AND GAVE THEM The Lands Of The Heathen:  And They Inherited The Labour Of The People;  45) That They Might Observe HIS STATUTES (RULES OF THE COVENANT), AND KEEP HIS LAWS.  PRAISE YE THE LORD.  Deuteronomy 4:1.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v18-26, The psalmist recites the History Of The Plagues To Demonstrate THE LORD’S POWER.  The Plagues took place within time and space; they were THE ACTION OF GOD WITH HUMANS IN THE REAL WORLD.  The Order Of The Plagues is not followed strictly, and only eight of The Plagues are mentioned (Exodus 7–11).  v27-45, WITH GLADNESS:  This Poem Celebrates THE JOY OF THE LORD IN HIS ACTS OF DELIVERANCE.  GAVE THEM THE LANDS:  The Psalm was probably composed after the exile in Babylon.  A Celebration Of GOD’S GIFT OF LAND Would Have Been A Great Source Of Encouragement To The People That Had Just Returned To The Land.

Quest Study Bible – v24-45, SCRIPTURE LINK,  The Stories Of Israel’s Deliverance From Egypt, Travels In The Desert and Entrance Into The Land of Canaan Are Told In Exodus and Numbers.  v44, “Why Did GOD Give Israel The Lands Of Other People?”  It was not because Israel was more righteous or deserving.  GOD Expelled The Nations Of Canaan Because Of Their Wickedness.  Later Israel Was Punished For Sin In The Same Way When Assyria And Babylon Took Over The Land.  Also see article:  “What right did Israel have to take the land?”  (Numbers 33:52-52).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v24-45, As The Believer Commonly Thrives Best In His Soul When Under THE CROSS (or, The Will Of THE CROSS); So THE CHURCH Also Flourishes Most In TRUE HOLINESS, And Increases In Number, While Under Persecution.  Yet Instruments Shall Be Raised Up For Their Deliverance, And Plagues May Be Expected By (For) Persecutors.  And SEE THE SPECIAL CARE GOD TOOK OF HIS PEOPLE IN THE WILDERNESS.   All The Benefits Bestowed On Israel As A Nation, Were Shadows Of Spiritual Blessings With Which We Are BLESSED IN CHRIST JESUS.  HAVING REDEEMED US WITH HIS BLOOD, RESTORED OUR SOULS TO HOLINESS, AND SET US AT LIBERTY FROM SATAN’S BONDAGE, HE GUIDES AND GUARDS US ALL THE WAY.  HE SATISFIES OUR SOULS WITH THE BREAD OF HEAVEN, AND THE WATER OF LIFE FROM THE ROCK OF SALVATION, AND WILL BRING US SAFELY TO HEAVEN.  HE REDEEMS HIS SERVANTS FROM ALL INIQUITY, AND PURIFIES THEM UNTO HIMSELF, TO BE A PECULIAR PEOPLE, ZEALOUS OF GOOD WORKS.  Amen.

“O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD,” cont’d, Psalm 105:8) HE HATH REMEMBERED HIS COVENANT FOR EVER, THE WORD WHICH HE COMMANDED TO A THOUSAND GENERATIONS.  Luke 1:72.  9) WHICH COVENANT HE MADE WITH ABRAHAM, AND HIS OATH UNTO ISAAC;  Genesis 22:16; Hebrews 6:17.  10) AND CONFIRMED THE SAME UNTO JACOB FOR A LAW, AND TO ISRAEL FOR AN EVERLASTING COVENANT:  11) Saying, UNTO THEE WILL I GIVE THE LAND OF CANAAN THE LOT OF YOUR INHERITANCE:  12) When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.  Genesis 34:30.  13) When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;  14) HE SUFFERED (ALLOWED) no man to do them wrong:  yea, HE REPROVED (REBUKED) kings for their sakes;  Genesis 35:5.  15) Saying, TOUCH NOT MINE ANOINTED, AND DO MY PROPHETS NO HARM.  16) Moreover HE CALLED For A Famine Upon The Land:  HE BRAKE The Whole Staff Of Bread (HE DESTROYED All Their Supplies Of Food).  17) HE Sent A Man Before Them, Even Joseph, Who Was Sold For A Servant:  Genesis 37:28.  18) Whose feet they hurt with fetters:  he was laid in iron:  19) Until the time that HIS (GOD’S WORD) came:  THE WORD OF THE LORD TRIED him.  20) The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free.  21) He (the king) made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:  22) To bind his princes at his (Jacobs) pleasure; and teach his (the king’s) senators wisdom.  23) Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.  Genesis 46:6.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v7, 8, The psalmist assured his audience that even if they did not remember, GOD DOES REMEMBER.  HE REMEMBERS:  The Words Of The Original Promise To Abraham Set Out THE LORD’S Obligation In Strong Terms (Genesis 12:1-3).  These ideas are reinforced by the Dramatic Encounter With Abraham In Genesis 15.  In the Story of the binding of Isaac in Genesis 22, THE LORD UNDERTAKES AN IRREVOCABLE OATH OF OBLIGATION (Genesis 22:16-18).  v9-15, When they went:   This section is an overview of the history of Israel, probably written after the return of the exiles from Babylon (Psalm 147).  The Major Theme Of The Poem Is GOD’S FAITHFULNESS TO HIS PEOPLE IN THEIR EARLY HISTORY.  v16, 17, The experiences of Joseph occupy a long section of The Book of Genesis (Genesis 37–50).  Here Joseph’s story is recounted as poetry and song.  v18-26, The psalmist recites the History Of The Plagues To Demonstrate THE LORD’S POWER.  The Plagues took place within time and space; they were THE ACTION OF GOD WITH HUMANS IN THE REAL WORLD.  The Order Of The Plagues is not followed strictly, and only eight of The Plagues are mentioned (Exodus 7–11).

Quest Study Bible – v8-10, SCRIPTURE LINK, “HIS COVENANT,”  THE PROMISE That The People Of Israel Would Possess The Land Of Canaan (v. 11).  This PROMISE Was Made To Abraham (Genesis 22:15-18), Isaac (Genesis 26:3) and Jacob (Genesis 35:11-12).  v15, “MY ANOINTED ONES,”  Generally Means Specially Set Apart And Consecrated For GOD’S USE ONLY.  In This Case It Refers To The Prophets. MESSIAH AND CHRIST BOTH MEAN THE ANOINTED ONE (see NIV text note at Matthew 1:17).   v17, SCRIPTURE LINK, Joseph’s story can be found in Genesis 37, 39-48.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v23, Israel also came into Egypt  That is, Jacob, as afterwards expressed, who had the name of Israel, from his Wrestling With GOD and prevailing. He came into Egypt, being invited by Pharaoh, and having heard of his son Joseph being alive, and of his exaltation.  And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham:
the same with Egypt; Mizraim, from whence Egypt has its name, being the son of Ham, ( Genesis 10:6 ) . Hence Egypt is called by Plutarch F11 Chemia; and Diodorus Siculus F12 speaks of a city in Thebais, or Upper Egypt, which was called by the inhabitants Chemmis, interpreted by them the city of Pan; and Plutarch.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-23, Let Us Remember THE REDEEMER’S MARVELOUS WORKS, HIS WONDERS, AND THE JUDGMENTS OF HIS MOUTH.  Though True Christians are few (in) number, strangers and pilgrims on earth, yet a Far Better Inheritance Than Canaan Is Made Sure (Guaranteed) To Them By THE COVENANT OF GOD; And If We Have THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, None Can Do Us Any Harm.  Afflictions Are Among Our Mercies.  They Prove Our Faith And Love, They Humble Our Pride, They Wean Us From The World, And Quicken Our Prayers.  Bread is the staff (the resource) which supports life; when that staff is broken, the body fails and sinks to the earth.  THE WORD OF GOD IS THE STAFF (THE RESOURCE) OF SPIRITUAL LIFE, The Food And Support Of The Soul:  The Sorest Judgment IS A FAMINE OF HEARING THE WORD OF THE LORD.  Such A Famine Was Sore In All Lands When CHRIST APPEARED IN THE FLESH; WHOSE COMING, AND THE BLESSED EFFECT OF IT, Are Shadowed Forth In The History Of Joseph.  AT THE APPOINTED TIME CHRIST WAS EXALTED AS MEDIATOR; ALL THE TREASURES OF GRACE AND SALVATION ARE AT HIS DISPOSAL, Perishing Sinners Come To HIM, And Are RELIEVED BY HIM (FOR HIS SALVATION).  Amen.

“O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD,” Psalm 105:1) O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD, Call Upon HIS NAME:  Make Known HIS DEEDS Among The People.  Isaiah 12:4.  2) Sing Unto HIM, Sing Psalms Unto HIM:  Talk Ye Of All HIS WONDROUS WORKS.  3) Glory Ye In HIS HOLY NAME:  Let The Heart Of Them Rejoice That SEEK THE LORD.  4) SEEK THE LORD, AND HIS STRENGTH:  SEEK HIS FACE EVER MORE.  5) REMEMBER HIS MARVELLOUS WORKS THAT HE HATH DONE; HIS WONDERS, AND THE JUDGMENTS OF HIS MOUTH;  Deuteronomy 8:2.  6) O ye seed of Abraham HIS Servant, ye children of Jacob HIS Chosen.  7) HE IS THE LORD Our GOD:  HIS JUDGMENTS ARE IN ALL THE EARTH.  Isaiah 26:9.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1-6, The psalmist calls to memory what GOD DID FOR HIS PEOPLE IN FULFILLMENT Of THE COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM.  Remember is the Key Word of the Psalm:  The psalmist wanted to remind GOD’S People Of HIS GOODNESS.   v7, 8, The psalmist assured his audience that even if they did not remember, GOD DOES REMEMBER.

Quest Study Bible – v1, “Why was history important?”  GOD Reminded The People Of HIS MIRACLES Interwoven Throughout Their History—How HE HAD DELIVERED THEM FROM THEIR ENEMIES AND CARED FOR THEM IN TIMES OF NEED.  HE HAD RESCUED THEM From Egyptian Bondage And Given The Entire Nation A New Birth.  Using History Was A Means To Call Israel Back To Its Roots, WARNING THE PEOPLE OF JUDGMENT AND EXHORTING THEM TO REPENT.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, Our Devotion Is Here Stirred Up, that we may stir up ourselves to PRAISE GOD.  SEEK HIS STRENGTH, THAT IS, HIS GRACE; THE STRENGTH OF HIS SPIRIT To Work In Us That Which Is Good, Which We Cannot Do But By STRENGTH DERIVED FROM HIM, For Which HE WILL BE SOUGHT (OR, MUST BE SOUGHT).  SEEK TO HAVE HIS FAVOR TO ETERNITY, Therefore Continue SEEKING IT, While Living In This World, For HE WILL Not Only Be Found, But HE WILL REWARD THOSE THAT DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM.

“Let The Church Say Amen,”  Andre Crouch featuring Marvin Winans

Zion, historically, Zion was the rock out-cropping between two valleys in Jerusalem.  Later, the Term came to mean the entire western ridge of early Jerusalem, and still later, to Jerusalem, itself (Psalm 126:1).  This area was originally inhabited by the Jebusites (II Samuel 5:7), later becoming the City of David.  Here David Consecrated his palace, acquired the threshing floor of Araunah (II Samuel 24:16), there erected an Altar, and there Solomon built HIS (GOD”S) TEMPLE.  Spiritually, the Term applies to the City of David (I Chronicles 11;5), to The Church Of GOD (Isaiah 2:3; Hebrews 11:10; 12:22).  And to The Heavenly City (Hebrews 12:22-24).

“Zion’s New Name,” III, Isaiah 62:10) Go through, go through The Gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a Standard (A Level of Acceptable Quality) for the people.  11) Behold, THE LORD Hath Proclaimed Unto The End Of The World, Say Ye To The Daughter Of Zion, Behold, Thy SALVATION COMETH; Behold, HIS REWARD IS WITH HIM, And HIS WORK BEFORE HIM.  12) And They Shall Call Them, The Holy People, The Redeemed Of THE LORD:  And thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, Gates probably refers to those in The “Holy Courts” (v. 9).  The Prophet commanded the Worshipers of v. 9 to pass through The Gates in order to Praise THE LORD.  Prepare the way means to encourage the people to come to THE TEMPLE For Worship (40:3, 4; 57:14).  Stones refers to any impediment to Worship (57:14).  Lift up a Banner (Standard) (5:26; 11:10) is an encouragement to all peoples To Worship GOD.  v11, Proclaimed to the end of the world links this verse with “a Banner for the peoples” in v. 10.  The verb say is plural, indicating that a number of people will declare this Announcement Of SALVATION to Jerusalem.  v12, The pronoun they refers to the Gentiles (v. 2).  The Holy People:  For similar descriptions of The Redeemed,  see 4:3; Exodus 19:6.

Quest Study Bible – v10, “Why build a road for the people?”  Rebuilding the fallen City of Jerusalem Pictures SALVATION.  The road repairs illustrates the Israelites’ return to Jerusalem, The Way That Leads To SALVATION.  GOD WOULD MAKE HIS SALVATION AVAILABLE TO All OF HIS PEOPLE.  Amen.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v10-12, ROOM WILL BE MADE FOR CHRIST’S SALVATION; ALL DIFFICULTIES SHALL BE REMOVED.  HE BRINGS A REWARD OF COMFORT AND PEACE WITH HIM; But A Work Of Humiliation and Reformation (Is) Before HIM; And They  (HIS CHURCH) Shall Be Called The HOLY People, And, The REDEEMED Of THE LORD.  HOLINESS Puts Honor And Beauty Upon Any Place Or Person, Makes Them Admired, Beloved, And Sought After.  Many Events May Have Been Part Fulfillment’s Of This, As Earnest (Truth) Of More Glorious Times Yet To Come.  The Close Connection Between The Blessedness Of The Jews And Of The Gentiles, Runs Through The Scriptures.  THE LORD JESUS WILL COMPLETE HIS WORK, AND HE NEVER WILL FORSAKE ONE WHOM HE HAS REDEEMED AND SANCTIFIED.  Amen.

“Zion’s New Name,” cont’d, Isaiah 62:6) I Have Set Watchman Upon Thy Walls, O Jerusalem, Which Shall Never Hold Their Peace Day Or Night:  Ye That Make Mention Of THE LORD, Keep Not Silence.  7) And Give HIM No Rest, Till HE Establish, And Till HE Make Jerusalem A Praise In The Earth.  8) THE LORD HATH SWORN BY HIS RIGHT HAND, AND BY THE ARM OF HIS STRENGTH, SURELY I WILL NO MORE GIVE THY CORN TO BE MEAT FOR THINE ENEMIES; AND THE SONS OF THE STRANGER SHALL NOT DRINK THY WINE, FOR THE WHICH THOU HAST LABOURED.  9) But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and Praise THE LORD; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in The Courts Of MY HOLINESS.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v6, 7, I refers to THE LORD (vv. 1, 8).  Watchmen refers to Prophets (56:10).  You who make mention of THE LORD is Isaiah’s synonym (meaning the same thing) for “watchmen” and shows that the Prophets were intercessors.  The phrases do not keep silent and give HIM no rest relate the Prophets’ Prayer to THE LORD’S Promises in v. 1 (see 64:12; 65:6).  v8, no longer:  This phrase gives Assurance that The Covenantal Blessings will outlast the curses.  v9, in MY Holy Courts:  This phrase anticipates the rebuilding of THE HOLY TEMPLE (Leviticus 23:39, 40; Deuteronomy 12:17, 18; 14:22-27; 16:9-17).

Quest Study Bible – v7, “Can we Tire GOD Out with our prayers?”  No.  But The Bible Sometimes Pictures GOD As Having Physical Human Characteristics.  This Verse simply urges GOD”S People To Pray Until Their Prayers Are Answered.  Though Prayers do not Literally Wear GOD Out, HE DOES RESPOND TO PERSISTENCE (Luke 18:1-8).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v6-9, GOD’S Professing People Must Be A Praying People.  HE Is Not Displeased With Us For Being Earnest, As Men Commonly Are; HE Bids Us To Cry After HIM, And Give HIM No Rest.  Luke 11:5-6.  It Is A Sign That GOD Is Coming To A People In MERCY, WHEN HE POURS OUT A SPIRIT OF PRAYER UPON THEM.  See how uncertain our creature comforts are.  See Also GOD’S MERCY In Giving Plenty, And PEACE To Enjoy It.  Let Us Delight In Attending THE COURTS OF THE LORD, THAT WE MAY ENJOY THE CONSOLATIONS OF HIS SPIRIT.

Standard – A Level of Acceptable Quality

“Zion’s New Name,”  Isaiah 62:1) For Zion’s Sake WILL I NOT HOLD MY PEACE,  And For Jerusalem’s Sake I WILL NOT REST, Until The Righteousness Thereof Go Forth As Brightness, And The Salvation Thereof As A Lamp That Burneth.  2) And the Gentiles shall see thy Righteousness, and all kings thy Glory:  and thou shalt be called by a New Name, Which THE MOUTH OF THE LORD SHALL NAME.  3) Thou shalt also be a Crown of Glory IN THE HAND OF THE LORD, and a Royal Diadem (Jewel, Crown) IN THE HAND OF THY GOD.  Zechariah 9:16.  4) Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate:  but thou shalt be called Hephzibah (That is, MY Delight Is In Her), and thy land Beulah (meaning Married):  For THE LORD Delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.  5) For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee:  and as the bridegroom Rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy GOD Rejoice over thee.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, 2, The repetition of Righteousness (v. 1) shows that THE DIVINE ORACLE and the Prophet’s comments are linked.  A new name signifies a new status.  v3, Zion is a Crown of Glory, or Royal Diadem, IN THE HAND OF THE LORD.  v4, 5, The words Forsaken and Desolate are symbolic names for Jerusalem under Judgment.  Hephzibah (MY Delight is in her) and Beulah (Married) are symbolic names denoting Blessing.

Quest Study Bile – v4, “Why the new names?”  In ancient times, names were used to do much more than to identify a person.  Names revealed something about people—their characteristics, for example, or the circumstances surrounding their lives.  Changing names was a vivid way to express a change in circumstances.  See NIV text notes for the meanings.  Also see “Why give a name like this to a child?”  (8:3).  v4, “How can land be married?”  In a figurative sense.  Since marriage was considered a Blessing, this was a Picture of GOD”S Blessings upon the People of GOD who lived in the land.  This Promise was especially significant to people who had been described as childless widows (54:1, 4-5).  v5, “Why use incest to Picture GOD’S Blessings?”  Metaphors (a figure of speech used to refer to another thing)  have limitations and this one was probably not meant to be stretched too far.  The word sons may have meant Builder  (see NIV text note).  The word marry may mean take possession of.  This was simply a picture of the people of THE LORD returning to Jerusalem and loving and caring for that city as their own.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-5, THE SON OF GOD Here Assures HIS CHURCH Of HIS UNFAILING LOVE, And HIS PLEADING For Her Under All Trials And Difficulties.  She shall be called by a New Name, a Pleasant Name, such as She was never called by before.  The State of True Religion In The World, Before The Preaching Of THE GOSPEL, no man seemed to have any real concern for GOD, By HIS GRACE, Has Wrought That (Worked A Good Work Through THE CROSS) In HIS CHURCH, WHICH MAKES HER HIS DELIGHT.  Let us thence learn Motives (Reasons) To HOLINESS.  If THE LORD Rejoices Over Us, WE SHOULD REJOICE IN HIS SERVICE (HIS WILL IN AND FOR OUR LIVES).

“THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR,” III, Isaiah 61:10) I Will Greatly Rejoice In THE LORD, My Soul Shall Be Joyful In My GOD; For HE Hath Clothed Me With The Garments Of SALVATION, HE Hath Covered Me With The Robe Of RIGHTEOUSNESS, As a Bridegroom Decketh (Covers) Himself With Ornaments, And As A Bride Adorneth Herself With Her Jewels.  Revelation 21:2.  11) For As The Earth Bringeth Forth Her Bud, And As The Garden Causeth The Things That Are Sown In It To Spring Forth, SO THE LORD GOD WILL CAUSE RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PRAISE TO SPRING FORTH BEFORE ALL THE NATIONS.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, I and the parallel My soul refer to personified (a quality or concept) Zion.  Rejoice is translated “Joy” in Verse 3 (see also 65:18).  Clothed signifies the Servant’s new Glorified Status or Condition (47:2; 52:1; 59:17).  v11, Spring Forth:  This Phrase is also found in 42:9; 43:19; 46:8 To Describe The Coming Of GOD’S SALVATION.  RIGHTEOUSNESS Here Means “DELIVERANCE” (54:17).

Quest Study Bible – v10, “How did bridegrooms dress like Priests?”  A bridegroom in Isaiah’s day wore a turban or crown of some sort (Song of Solomon 3:11).  Priests also wore turbans (Exodus 28:4).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v10-11, Those Only Shall Be Clothed With The Garments Of SALVATION Hereafter, That Are Covered With THE ROBE OF CHRIST’S RIGHTEOUSNESS Now, And BY THE SANCTIFICATION OF THE SPIRIT HAVE GOD’S IMAGE RENEWED UPON THEM.  These Blessings Shall Spring Forth For Ages To Come, Like The Fruits Of The Earth.  So Duly, So Constantly, And With Such Advantage To Mankind, WILL THE LORD GOD CAUSE RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PRAISE TO SPRING FORTH.  THEY Shall Spread Far; THE GREAT SALVATION SHALL BE PUBLISHED (MADE KNOWN) AND PROCLAIMED, To The Ends Of The Earth.  Let Us Be Earnest In Prayer, THAT THE LORD GOD MAY CAUSE THAT RIGHTEOUSNESS TO SPRING FORTH AMONG US, Which Constitutes The Excellence And Glory Of The Christian Profession.  Amen.

“THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR,” cont’d, Isaiah 61:4) And they shall build the old wastes (ancient ruins), they shall raise up the former desolations (places long devastated), and they shall repair the waste cities (former cities that have been devastated), the desolations of many generations.  5) And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.  6) But ye shall be named The Priests Of THE LORD:  men shall call you the Ministers Of Our GOD:  ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves (you will feed on the wealth of nations).  Exodus 19:6.  7) For your shame ye shall have double (portion); and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion (rejoice in their inheritance):  therefore in their land they shall possess the double:  Everlasting Joy Shall Be Upon Them.  2 Kings 2:9.  8) FOR I THE LORD LOVE JUDGMENT, I HATE ROBBERY FOR BURNT OFFERING; AND I WILL DIRECT THEIR WORK IN TRUTH, AND I WILL MAKE AN EVERLASTING COVENANT WITH THEM.  Isaiah 55:3.  9) And their Seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people:  all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are The Seed Which THE LORD HATH BLESSED.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v4, 5, They refers to Jews (58:12) and Gentiles (60:10).  Desolations of many generations:  See 58:12; 60:10.  v6, Priests of THE LORD:  With CHRIST, They will make intercession for sinners (53:12; Exodus 19:6; 1 Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6).  Servants here means “Ministers,”  a synonym (meaning the same) for “Priests.”  (1 Kings 8:11).  v7, 8, Everlasting Joy:  For other references to Eternal Joy, see 35:10; 51:11; 60:19, 20.  v9, Shall be known has the sense of “shall be renowned (distinguished).”  among the Gentiles … whom THE LORD Has Blessed:  This section alludes to the Fulfillment of THE PROMISES Made To Abraham (41:8; 51:2; Genesis 12;3).

Quest Study Bible – v5, “Was it a benefit to have alien and foreign workers?”  Yes.  It was a sign of prosperity to have many servants.  Life was very hard for most people in the ancient world and the promise of having others to do your work for you was a Wonderful Picture Of GOD’S SALVATION.  These, most likely, were domestic servants from other nations, not slaves captured in war.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v8, FOR I THE LORD LOVE JUDGMENT  To do that which is Right and Just HIMSELF, and to see it done by others, and therefore HE WILL RIGHT THE WRONGS OF HIS PEOPLE; and whereas the Jews, though they have justly suffered HIS VENGEANCE for their sins, yet being Reproached and Abused beyond measure by the Gentiles, among whom they are dispersed; THE LORD WILL LOOK IN MERCY UPON THEM, AND WILL DELIVER AND SAVE THEM,AND BESTOW FAVORS PLENTIFULLY ON THEM, as in the preceding verse: or THE LORD Loves Strict Justice And Real Righteousness, And Will Not Be Put Off With An Imperfect RIGHTEOUSNESS In The Room (or In Stead) Of A Perfect One, and much less an insincere and hypocritical one, such as that of the unbelieving Jews, the pharisaical (Pharisees practicing or advocating strict observance of external forms and ceremonies of religion or conduct without regard to THE SPIRIT); self-righteous; hypocritical. sect of them; Nothing Less Is Acceptable To GOD Than A Perfect RIGHTEOUSNESS, Which Is Adequate to the Demands of Law and Justice; and such a RIGHTEOUSNESS is not to be found among men, ONLY IN HIS SON JESUS CHRIST, WITH WHICH HE IS WELL PLEASED, ( Isaiah 42:21 ) :  I HATE ROBBERY FOR BURNT OFFERING;  that which is stolen, though it be converted into a burnt offering: or, “with a burnt offering” F3; all immorality, this being put for the whole, along with ceremonial sacrifices; as if it could be Atoned (To Appease GOD) for by them, or would be connived at on account of them: or, (by burnt offering;) expiation of theft, or any other sin, by the Sacrifices Of The Law, BEING OFFERED UP WITHOUT FAITH IN CHRIST; and especially since THE GREAT SACRIFICE (CHRIST JESUS ON THE CROSS), THE ANTITYPE (IS CHRIST, all Types were of THE ONE TO COME, Encyclopedia of The Bible) of them, IS OFFERED UP; AND THEREFORE GOD WILL HAVE NO MORE OFFERED UP, THEY ARE DISPLEASING AND HATEFUL TO HIM, ( Isaiah 1:12 Isaiah 1:13 ) ( Hebrews 10:5-8 ) :  AND I WILL DIRECT THEIR WORK IN TRUTH;  Appoint them work and service of a SPIRITUAL Nature, and Direct them, and Enable them to perform it in SPIRIT AND TRUTH, in opposition to the carnal and shadowy ordinances of the ceremonial law; see ( John 4:23John 4:24 ) :  AND I WILL MAKE AN EVERLASTING COVENANT WITH THEM;  that is, RENEW THE EVERLASTING COVENANT OF GRACE WITH THEM, MAKE IT MANIFEST (CLEAR) UNTO THEM; APPLY THE GRACE AND BESTOW BLESSINGS OF IT TO AND ON THEM, ( Romans 11:25-27 ) .  Amen.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v4-9, Promises Are Here Made To The Jews Returned Out Of Captivity, which extend to all those who, through GRACE, are Delivered Out Of Spiritual Thraldom (State of Slavery).  An unholy soul is like a city that is broken down, and has no walls, like a house in ruins; But By THE POWER OF CHRIST’S GOSPEL AND GRACE, IT IS FITTED TO BE A HABITATION OF GOD, THROUGH THE SPIRIT.  When By THE GRACE OF GOD, We Attain To HOLY Indifference As To The Affairs Of This World; When, Though Our Hands Are Employed About Them, But Preserved ENTIRE TO GOD, AND HIS SERVICE, Then the sons of the alien are our plowmen and vine-dressers.  Those Whom HE SETS AT LIBERTY, HE SETS TO WORK.  HIS SERVICE IS PERFECT FREEDOM; It Is The Greatest Honor.  All Believers Are Made, To Our GOD, kings and priests, and always ought to conduct themselves as such.  Those who have THE LORD FOR THEIR PORTION, Have Reason To Say, That They Have Worthy Portion, And To REJOICE IN IT.  In The Fullness Of Heavens Joys We Shall Receive More Than Double For All Our Services And Sufferings.  GOD DESIRES TRUTH, AND THEREFORE HATES ALL INJUSTICE.  Nor will It justify any man’s robbery to say, it was for burnt offerings; and that robbery is most hateful which is under this pretense.  Let the children Of godly parents be such, that all may see The Fruits Of A Good Education; An Answer To The Prayers For Them, In THE FRUIT OF GOD’S BLESSING.  Amen.

“Glory To The Lamb Jesus”/Isaiah 61, “THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR”

“Open My Heart,” Yolanda Adams

“THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR,”  Isaiah 61:1) THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD GOD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE THE LORD HATH ANOINTED ME TO PREACH GOOD TIDINGS UNTO THE MEEK; HE HATH SENT ME TO BIND UP THE BROKENHEARTED, TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES, AND THE OPENING OF THE PRISON TO THEM THAT ARE BOUND;  Psalm 34:18; Hosea 6:1.  2) TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR Of THE LORD, AND THE DAY OF VENGEANCE OF OUR GOD; TO COMFORT ALL THAT MOURN;  Malachi 4:1, 3.  3) TO APPOINT UNTO THEM THAT MOURN IN ZION, TO GIVE UNTO THEM BEAUTY FOR ASHES, THE OIL OF JOY FOR MOURNING, THE GARMENT OF PRAISE FOR THE SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS; THAT THEY MIGHT BE CALLED TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, THE PLANTING Of THE LORD, THAT HE MIGHT BE GLORIFIED.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, THE LORD HAS ANOINTED:  THE NAME MESSIAH, Or CHRIST in Greek, means the “ANOINTED ONE.”  Poor also means “humble,” which like brokenhearted, indicates those who confidently Hope In GOD in spite of their present distress (11:4; Psalm 34:18; 51:17).  Proclaim liberty probably alludes to the official Inauguration of the “Year of Release” or Jubilee (Leviticus 25:10).  Captives refers to those in bondage to wickedness.  Those who are bound is translated “prisoners” in 49:9, here it means “captives.”  v2, THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD corresponds to “THE DAY OF SALVATION” (49:8) and the Year of MY Redeemed” (63:4).  v3, A host lavished on a guest the oil of joy (Psalm 23:5; 45:7; Luke 7:46).  HE MAY BE GLORIFIED:  For similar references see 44:23; 49:5.

Quest Study Bible – v1-2, SCRIPTURE LINK, When JESUS PREACHED HIS FIRST SERMON In HIS Hometown Synagogue, HE READ THESE VERSES AND SAID THAT THEY WERE FULFILLED THAT DAY.  See Luke 4:16-19.  v3, “Why wear ashes?”  In the Bible, the ashes left behind after a fire had burned out were, were understandably, a sign of destruction.  When people experienced troubles, they sometimes sat on an ash pile (58:5) or put ashes on their heads (2 Samuel 13:19) as a sign of mourning.  But GOD PROMISES HIS PEOPLE THAT THEIR MOURNING WILL END; in place of ashes, they will well-groomed with Oil, A Symbol Of Joy And Celebration.  Also see “What was good and pleasant about oil poured on the head?”  (Psalm 133;2).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-3, The Prophets Had The Holy Spirit Of GOD At Times, Teaching them what to say, and causing them to say It; BUT CHRIST HAD THE SPIRIT ALWAYS, WITHOUT MEASURE TO QUALIFY HIM, AS MAN, FOR THE WORK TO WHICH HE WAS APPOINTED.  The poor are commonly best disposed to receive The Gospel, James 2:5; and IT is only likely to Profit us when Received with Meekness.  To such as are poor in Spirit, CHRIST PREACHED GOOD TIDINGS WHEN HE SAID, BLESSED ARE THE MEEK.  CHRIST’S Satisfaction Is Accepted.  By the domination of sin in us, we are bound under the power of Satan; But THE SON IS READY BY HIS SPIRIT, TO MAKE US FREE; AND THEN WE SHALL BE FREE INDEED (John 8:36).  Sin and Satan were to be destroyed; And CHRIST Triumphed Over them ON HIS CROSS.  But the children of men, who stand out against these Offers, shall be Dealt with as enemies.  CHRIST WAS TO BE A COMFORTER, AND SO HE IS, HE IS SENT TO COMFORT ALL WHO MOURN, AND WHO SEEK TO HIM, AND NOT TO THE WORLD, FOR COMFORT.  HE WILL DO ALL THIS FOR HIS PEOPLE, That They May Abound In The Fruits Of RIGHTEOUSNESS, As The Branches Of GOD’s PLANTING.  Neither THE MERCY OF GOD, THE ATONEMENT OF CHRIST (APPEASING OF GOD), NOR THE GOSPEL OF GRACE, Profits the self-sufficient and proud.  They must be Humbled, and Led to know their own character and wants, BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, that they may See and Feel their Need Of The Sinner’s FRIEND AND SAVIOUR.  HIS DOCTRINE CONTAINS GLAD TIDINGS Indeed To Those Who Are Humbled Before GOD.  Amen.

“Glory To The Lamb Jesus”/Psalm 53, “The Fool,” A Psalm of David, III

Christian Living

Jesus, The Messiah, The Holy One

“Emmanuel” Norman Hutchins

Psalm 53 is a recasting of Psalm 14 with only slight differences, particularly in the ending.  Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary.

Iniquity – Wickedness, Vice

“The Fool,” III, Psalm 53:6) Oh that THE SALVATION Of Israel Were Come Out Of Zion!  When GOD Bringeth Back The Captivity Of HIS People, Jacob Shall Rejoice And Israel Shall Be Glad.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v6,  O that The Salvation of Israel [were come] out of Zion!  &c.] Or, “who will give F6 out of Zion The Salvation of Israel?” The Targum adds, “except THE LORD”; and this is a request to HIM for It: and, as in ( Psalms 14:7 ) , it may be a wish for THE FIRST COMING OF CHRIST, TO WORK OUT SALVATION FOR HIS PEOPLE; here it may be expressive of the desire of The Church For HIS COMING IN A SPIRITUAL MANNER, in the latter day, TO TAKE TO HIMSELF HIS GREAT POWER, AND REIGN; TO DESTROY antichrist, AND DELIVER HIS PEOPLE FROM BONDAGE AND OPPRESSION BY him (antichrist); when the Gentiles shall be gathered in, the Jews will be converted, and all Israel Saved; see ( Romans 11:25 Romans 11:26 ) . It is in the original text, “Salvation’s” F7; Denoting The Complete Salvation Of THE CHURCH; when all Her enemies will be destroyed, and all Peace and Prosperity shall be enjoyed by Her (The Church) ; (See Gill on Psalms 14:6).  When GOD Bringeth Back the captivity of HIS People:  who have been carried into it by antichrist, ( Revelation 13:10 ) ;  Jacob shall rejoice, [and] Israel shall be glad;  for now the kingdoms of this world will become CHRIST’S; The Marriage Of THE LAMB Will Be Come, And The Bride Made Ready, Through The CALLING Of The Gentiles, And The Conversion Of The Jews; which will occasion The Twenty Four Elders, The Representatives Of The Christian Church, To Give Thanks To THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, And Cause Many Voices To Be Heard In HEAVEN, Expressing Great Joy On This Occasion, ( Revelation 11:15-18 ) ( 19:1-7 ) .

Quest Study Bible –  v1-6, SCRIPTURE LINK “The fool says in his heart,”   The same thoughts can be found in 14:1-7.  v1-6, “Why are some Verses repeated in Scripture?”   The Psalm seems to be a repetition and revision of Psalm 14.  One difference—GOD is used in place of LORD—leads some to believe this Psalm was written a few centuries later, possibly during the reign of Hezekiah.  By that time many regarded YAHWEH (LORD) As More Than Just THE GOD Of Israel.  Others, however, wonder if David may have made slight revisions so the Psalm could be used for another occasion or with different music.  Whatever the reason, the result is that THE TRUTH Is Emphasized.  See “Why repeat these Verses, almost Word for Word?”  (2 Kings 14:15-16) and “Why is this information repeated?”  (Jeremiah 52:1-24).

Quest Study Bible – v6, “How And When Did GOD Restore Israel’s Fortunes?”  This is a generic Prayer that would fit numerous situations in Israel’s history.  Some suggest it refers to the time that Israel was restored when the Arameans, hearing the sounds of chariots and horses, even though there were none, abandoned a siege of Samaria (2 Kings 7:6-7).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – The Corruption Of Man By Nature.  This Psalm is almost the same as the 14th.  The scope of It is to convince us or our sins.  GOD, By The Psalmist, Here Shows Us How Bad We Are, And Proves This By HIS OWN CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE.  HE SPEAKS Terror To Persecutors, the worst of sinners.  HE SPEAKS Encouragement To GOD’S Persecuted People.  How comes it that men are so bad?  Because there is no FEAR OF GOD before their eyes.  Men’s bad practices flow from their bad principles; if they profess to Know GOD, yet in works, because in thoughts, they Deny HIM.  See the folly of sin; he is a fool, In The Account Of GOD, WHOSE JUDGMENT, We Are Sure Is RIGHT, (Yet we) harbor such Corrupt Thoughts.  And see the Fruit of Sin; to what it brings men, when their hearts are hardened through The Deceitfulness of Sin.  See Also THE FAITH Of The Saints, and their Hope and Power as to the Cure of this great evil.  THERE WILL COME A SAVIOR, A GREAT SALVATION, A SALVATION FROM SIN.  GOD WILL SAVE HIS CHURCH FROM ITS ENEMIES.  HE WILL SAVE ALL BELIEVERS FROM THEIR OWN SINS, THAT THEY MAY NOT BE LED CAPTIVE BY THEM, AND THIS WILL BE EVERLASTING JOY TO THEM.  FROM THIS WORK THE REDEEMER HAD HIS NAME JESUS, FOR HE SHALL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS, Matthew 1:21.  Amen.

Matthew 1:21) And she shall bring forth a SON, and thou shalt call HIS NAME JESUS:  FOR HE SHALL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS.  Genesis 49:10.  Amen.
