Isaiah 27:1.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v15, This Verse Is A Picture Of GOD’S JUDGMENT. Fire: Is the lightning; HIS Chariots are the storm clouds (Deuteronomy 33:26; Psalm 18:10). Like a Whirlwind Depicts The Strength And Speed Of THE LORD’S COMING (Jeremiah 4:13). v16, THE DIVINE WARRIOR COMES WITH FIRE AND SWORD (Luke 21:24; Revelation 19:11-15). All flesh refers to all the false worshipers described in this Chapter (Jeremiah 9:2).
Quest Study Bible – v15-16, “How Will GOD Judge The World? For Isaiah and other Old Testament Prophets, GOD Was Clearly A GOD Of Both JUDGMENT And SALVATION. They knew nothing of a SALVATION that did not involve JUDGMENT. In fact, they saw GOD’S JUDGMENT As A Sign That HE CARED ENOUGH TO SAVE. THE BIBLE Describes JUDGMENT For Sin In Various Ways: It is a place of Fire and Worms (Mark 9:48) and a place of darkness (Matthew 8:12). It Is A Sentence Pronounced By THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE (Matthew 25:31-33). It is Harvesting What You Have Sown (Galatians 6:7). It Is Separation From GOD (Matthew 7:23). Here, Isaiah pictures JUDGMENT As A Mighty Warrior; GOD IS RIDING A WHIRLWIND FOR A CHARIOT, Destroying HIS Enemies With FIRE And A SWORD. The Message Is Clear: GOD DOES NOT IGNORE SINNERS; HE PUNISHES THEM. Perhaps Isaiah is speaking here of THE FINAL JUDGMENT OF GOD, At The End Of The World When Sinners Will Be Separated From GOD In HELL. Or perhaps he is speaking of THE JUDGMENT that continues to cycle throughout history—nations falling from power, Defeated For Their Injustices. In Either Case GOD’S JUDGMENT IS SHOWN TO BE DEVASTATING.
John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v15, For, Behold, THE LORD WILL COME WITH FIRE Either with Material Fire, with which mystical Babylon or Rome shall be burnt, ( Revelation 18:8 ) , or with Indignation and Wrath, which shall be poured out like Fire, and be as Intolerable and Consuming as that: AND WITH HIS CHARIOTS LIKE A WHIRLWIND; Making A Great Noise, And Striking Great Terror; Alluding To Chariots in which men used formerly to fight: TO RENDER HIS ANGER WITH FURY, AND HIS REBUKE WITH FLAMES OF FIRE; a heap of words, to show The Fierceness Of HIS WRATH, And How Severe HIS REBUKE Of Enemies Will Be; which Will Be Not A Rebuke In Love, As Of HIS OWN PEOPLE, But In A Way Of VINDICTIVE WRATH. v16, For By Fire, And By HIS SWORD, WILL THE LORD PLEAD WITH ALL FLESH With the Mahometans, the Turks, the Ottoman empire, Against Whom HE WILL CALL FOR A SWORD, And WILL RAIN UPON THEM FIRE AND BRIMSTONE, Signified by Gog and Magog, ( Ezekiel 38:22 ) ( 39:6 ) and with the other antichristian powers at the battle of Armageddon; and when The Fourth Vial Will Be Poured Upon The Sun, And Men Will Be Scorched With Fire; see ( Revelation 16:8 Revelation 16:9 Revelation 16:16 ) ( Revelation 19:20 Revelation 19:21 ) : and the slain of THE LORD shall be many; that is, those that will be slain by THE LORD, both in the attempt of the Turks to recover the land of Canaan out of the hands of the Jews, possessed of it; whose numbers of slain will be so many, that the burying of them will last seven months, ( Ezekiel 39:12 ) and in the battle between the Christian princes, CHRIST AT THE HEAD OF THEM, and the antichristian armies, led on by the beast and the kings of the earth; when the fowls of the air will be invited to the great supper of THE LORD, to eat the flesh of kings, captains, and mighty men, so great will the slaughter be, ( Revelation 19:17-21 ) , see also ( Isaiah 11:13 ) .
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v15-24, A Prophetic Declaration Is Given Of THE LORD’S VENGEANCE ON ALL ENEMIES OF HIS CHURCH, ESPECIALLY THAT OF ALL ANTI-CHRISTIAN OPPOSERS OF THE GOSPEL IN THE LATER DAYS.
