“Praise and Prayer,” IV, Isaiah 64:1) O That THOU Would Rend The Heavens, That THOU Wouldest Come Down, That The Mountains Might Bow Down At THY Presence,  2) As when the melting Fire burneth, the Fire causeth the waters to boil, to make THY NAME Known To THINE Adversaries, that the nations may tremble at THY Presence.  3) When THOU Didst Terrible Things which we looked not for, THOU Camest Down, the mountains flowed down at THY Presence.  4) For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O GOD, Beside THEE, What HE Hath Prepared For him That Waiteth For HIM.  Psalm 31:19.  5) THOU Meetest him that Rejoiceth and Worketh Righteousness, those that Remember THEE In THY Ways Behold, THOU Art Wroth; for we have sinned:  in those is continuance (those who continue in sin), and we shall be saved.  Malachi 3:6.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, 2, Oh that … YOU would come down:  This appeal for THE LORD to (come down) is based on HIS Appearances at Sinai.  The image of fire often Symbolizes GOD’S PRESENCE Especially In Judgment.  v3, Awesome Things:  THE APPEARANCE OF GOD IS FEARSOME (Exodus 19:16-21; Deuteronomy 10:21; 2 Samuel 7:23).  for which we did not look:  GOD’S Saving Acts Surpass Expectations (Ephesians 3:20).  v4, Paul cites this Verse with some changes in 1 Corinthians 2:9.  v5, YOU Meet him … who remembers YOU In YOUR Ways:  These words reinforce the idea of v. 4.  The word indeed provides a transition from the petition to the confession of sin.

Quest Study Bible – v1-3, “WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GOD COMES DOWN?”  Who can say?  With GOD, There Is No Limit As To What Can Happen.  Isaiah wanted GOD To Demonstrate HIS GREAT POWER AND REVEAL HIS GLORY TO ALL NATIONS, Not Just To HIS OWN PEOPLE.  He wanted GOD Both to JUDGE The Evil Nations and to BLESS HIS PEOPLE ISRAEL.  When GOD COMES IN POWER TO DO AWESOME THINGS That We Did Not Expect (v. 3), THE WICKED AND THE RIGHTEOUS BOTH TREMBLE BEFORE HIM.  v4, “How can we wait for HIM?”   To Wait For GOD Means To TRUST HIM, To Be FAITHFUL To HIM And To Commit Oneself To HIM (see for example Psalm 37:3-7).  Waiting For GOD means, in particular, To Keep On TRUSTING Even When Things Are Going Badly—When You Have Not Yet Been Delivered From Your Troubles.  GOD DOES NOT ALWAYS INTERVENE IMMEDIATELY WHEN WE CALL ON HIM FOR HELP.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – 1-5, They Desire That GOD Would Manifest HIMSELF To Them And For Them, So That All May See IT.  This is applicable to THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST, WHEN THE LORD HIMSELF SHALL DESCEND FROM HEAVEN.  They Plead What GOD Had Used To Do, AND HAD DECLARED HIS GRACIOUS PURPOSE TO DO, FOR HIS PEOPLE.  They need not fear being disappointed of IT, for IT IS SURE; or disappointed in IT, FOR IT IS SUFFICIENT.  The Happiness of HIS PEOPLE IS BOUND UP IN WHAT GOD HAS DESIGNED FOR THEM, AND IS PREPARING FOR THEM, AND PREPARING THEM FOR;  FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE OR WILL DO.  Can we Believe THIS, and then think anything Too Great To Expect From HIS TRUTH, POWER, AND LOVE?  It Is Spiritual And Cannot Be Comprehended By Human Understanding.  IT IS EVER READY (HIS TRUTH, POWER, AND LOVE).  See What Communion There Is Between A GRACIOUS (MERCIFUL AND COMPASSIONATE) GOD And A Gracious Soul.  We Must Make Conscience (Our Moral Conduct) Of Doing Our Duty In Every Thing THE LORD Our GOD Requires.  Thou Meetest HIM:  This Speaks HIS FREENESS AND FORWARDNESS IN DOING THEM GOOD.  Though GOD Has Been Angry With Us For Our Sins, And JUSTLY, Yet HIS Anger Has Soon Ended; But In HIS FAVOR IS LIFE, Which Goes On And Continues, AND ON THAT WE DEPEND FOR OUR SALVATION.  Amen.

“The Battle Is Not Yours,”  Yolanda Adams

“PRAISE AND PRAYER,” III, Isaiah 63:15) Look Down From Heaven,  And Behold From The Habitation Of THY HOLINESS AND OF THY GLORY:  Where Is THY ZEAL AND THY STRENGTH, THE SOUNDING OF THY BOWELS (STRONG PASSIONS) AND OF THY MERCIES TOWARD me?  Are THEY Restrained?  16) Doubtless THOU ART our FATHER, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledged us not:  THOU, O LORD, ART our FATHER, our REDEEMER, THY NAME IS FROM EVERLASTING.  Galatians 3:28.  17) O LORD, why hast THOU made us to err from THY WAYS, and hardened our hearts from THY FEAR?  Return For THY servants’ sake, the tribes of THINE INHERITANCE.  Psalm 119:10; Matthew 13:15.  18) The people of THY HOLINESS have possessed It (THY SANCTUARY) but a little while:  our adversaries have trodden down THY SANCTUARY.  Daniel 8:24.  19) We are THINE:  THOU NEVER barest rule over them (the heathens); they were not CALLED BY THY NAME.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary –  v15, HEAVEN REFERS TO GOD’S UNIVERSAL RULE OVER SPACE AND TIME (Psalm 11:4-6).  The pronoun me is a personified Israel (59:9-15).  v16, GOD Is their Father because HE CREATED THEM AS A NATION (Deuteronomy 32:6; Jeremiah 3:4, 19).  Abraham and Israel, the people’s human fathers (51:2), were limited in their knowledge by time and space, in contrast to THE LORD, the people’s FATHER AND REDEEMER FROM EVERLASTING (41:14).   v17, us:  Isaiah identifies himself with his people (59:9-15).  THE LORD confirming the people in their sin, hardened their hearts (6:10; Exodus 4:21; Psalm 95:8).   v18, 19, Called by YOUR NAME Signifies THE LORD OWNERSHIP OF THE PEOPLE (Deuteronomy 28:10; Jeremiah 14:9).

Quest Study Bible – v17, “WHY WOULD GOD CAUSE PEOPLE TO STRAY FROM HIS WAYS?”  Some say that GOD Simply Allowed HIS People To Stray–HE Gave Them The Opportunity.  GOD IS NOT THE AUTHOR OF SIN; HE DOES NOT CAUSE PEOPLE TO SIN.  Though the Hebrews did not always distinguish it so carefully, There Is A Vast Difference Between WHAT GOD ALLOWS TO HAPPEN, Which Can Include Sin, And WHAT GOD CAUSES TO HAPPEN.  For further discussion on this, see article:  “HOW CAN A HOLY GOD SEND AN EVIL SPIRIT?”  (Judges 9:23).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v15-19, They Beseech HIM To Look Down On The Abject Condition Of Their Once-Favored Nation.  Would It Not Be Glorious To HIS NAME To Remove The Veil From Their Hearts, To Return To The Tribes Of HIS INHERITANCE?  The Babylonish Captivity, And The After-Deliverance Of The Jews, Were Shadows Of The Events Here Foretold.  THE LORD LOOKS DOWN UPON US IN TENDERNESS AND MERCY.  SPIRITUAL JUDGMENTS ARE MORE TO BE DREADED THAN ANY OTHER CALAMITIES; And We Should Most Carefully Avoid Those Sins Which Justly PROVOKE THE LORD To Leave Them To Themselves And To Their Deceiver.  “OUR REDEEMER FROM EVERLASTING”  IS THY NAME; Thy People Have Always Looked Upon THE GOD TO WHOM THEY MIGHT APPEAL.  THE LORD WILL HEAR THE PRAYERS OF THOSE WHO BELONG TO HIM, AND DELIVER THEM FROM THOSE NOT CALLED BY HIS NAME.  Amen.

“PRAISE AND PRAYER,” cont’d, Isaiah 63:10) But they rebelled, and vexed HIS HOLY SPIRIT:  Therefore HE WAS TURNED TO BE THEIR ENEMY, AND HE FOUGHT AGAINST THEM.  11) THEN HE REMEMBERED THE DAYS OF OLD, Moses, and HIS People, saying, Where is HE that bought them up out of the sea, with the shepherd (Moses) of HIS flock?  where is HE THAT PUT HIS HOLY SPIRIT within him (Moses)?  12) That Led them by the right hand of Moses WITH HIS GLORIOUS ARM, DIVIDING THE WATER BEFORE THEM, TO MAKE HIMSELF AN EVERLASTING NAME?  13) THAT LED them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble?   14) As a beast goeth down into the valley, THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD Caused him (the people of Israel) to rest:  SO DIDST THOU LEAD THY PEOPLE, TO MAKE THYSELF A GLORIOUS NAME.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary –  v10, rebelled:  this verb means “to be contentious” (Numbers 20:10; Psalm 78:40; 106:33, 43).  The HOLY SPIRIT is referred to from time to time in the Hebrew Scriptures, and several times in the Book of Isaiah (11:2; 42:1).  v11, Days of old refers to the period of the Exodus and the Wilderness.  The sea is an allusion to the Red Sea (50:2; Exodus 14:21-29).  Shepherd, referring to Moses, is plural.  CHRIST IS THE GREATER SHEPHERD (John 10:11; Hebrews 13:20; 1 Peter 5:4).  PUT HIS HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN THEM is an allusion to Numbers 11:17, 25.  v12, GLORIOUS ARM is an allusion to Exodus 15:6 (see also 41:13; 51:9).  Dividing The Water is a reference to Exodus 14:16, 21 (see Psalm 78:13).   v13, 14, The account of the Exodus and settlement of the land is concluded with two images.  The first is a horse moving sure-footedly across the sea bottom as through a wilderness; the second is a beast, meaning “a domesticated herd,” returning from grazing on mountainsides into the valley … to rest (Deuteronomy 12:9).

Quest Study Bible – v10, “How Can GOD Be Grieved (Vexed)?”  The BIBLE Often Speaks Of GOD’S PASSION AND DEEP EMOTIONS.  HE LOVES PEOPLE; HE HATES SIN.  HE SHOWS COMPASSION AND MERCY; HE GROWS ANGRY.  GOD’S EMOTIONS DEMONSTRATE HIS PERSONAL NATURE.  GOD IS NOT AN OMNIPOTENT MACHINE LOOKING DISPASSIONATELY ON THE WORLD.  HE LONGS TO BE INVOLVED IN OUR LIVES AND IS GRIEVED WHEN PEOPLE REJECT HIM.  THE PERSONAL SIDE OF GOD’S SPIRIT IS REVEALED MORE CLEARLY IN THIS PASSAGE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT.  Also see “WHAT GRIEVES THE HOLY SPIRIT?” (Ephesians 4:30).   v12, 14, “WHY DID CARE ABOUT PUBLIC RELATIONS?”  When people want to gain … renown or make … a glorious name for themselves, they are usually driven by less than pure motives including pride, self-centeredness and lust for power.  BUT GOD’S MOTIVES ARE ENTIRELY PURE.  HE WANTS PEOPLE TO KNOW THE TRUTH—THAT HE ALONE IS GOD, that other so-called gods are false.  ONLY WHEN PEOPLE KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD AND HONOR HIM AS GOD WILL THEY FIND THEIR DEEPEST NEEDS MET.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v7-14, The Latter Part Of This Chapter, and the whole of the next, seem to express the Payers of the Jews on their conversation.  They Acknowledge GOD’S GREAT MERCIES AND FAVORS TO THEIR NATION.  They Confess Their Wickedness And Hardness Of Heart; They Entreat HIS FORGIVENESS, And Deplore The Miserable Condition Under Which They Have So Long Suffered.  THE ONLY-BEGOTTEN SON OF THE FATHER BECAME THE ANGEL OR MESSENGER OF HIS LOVE; THUS HE REDEEMED AND BARE THEM WITH TENDERNESS.  Yet They Murdered, And Resisted HIS HOLY SPIRIT, Despising And Persecuting HIS HOLY PROPHETS, REJECTING AND CRUCIFYING THE PROMISED MESSIAH.  All Our Comforts And Hope Spring From THE LOVING-KINDNESS OF THE LORD, And All Our Miseries And Fears From Our Sins.  BUT HE IS THE SAVIOUR, And When Sinners SEEK AFTER HIM, WHO IN OTHER AGES GLORIFIED HIMSELF BY SAVING AND FEEDING HIS PURCHASED FLOCK, AND LEADING THEM SAFELY THROUGH DANGERS, AND HAS GIVEN HIS HOLY SPIRIT TO PROSPER THE LABORS OF HIS MINISTERS, There Is Good Ground To Hope That They Are Discovering THE WAY OF PEACE.  Amen.

“PRAISE AND PRAYER,” Isaiah 63:7) I Will Mention THE LOVINGKINDNESS OF THE LORD, AND THE PRAISES OF THE LORD, ACCORDING TO ALL THAT THE LORD HATH BESTOWED ON US, AND THE GREAT GOODNESS TOWARD THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL, WHICH HE HATH BESTOWED ON THEM ACCORDING TO HIS MERCIES, AND ACCORDING TO THE MULTITUDE OF HIS LOVINGKINDNESSES. 8) FOR HE SAID, SURELY THEY ARE MY PEOPLE, CHILDREN THAT WILL NOT LIE:  SO HE WAS THEIR SAVIOUR.  9) In their affliction HE WAS AFFLICTED, AND THE ANGEL OF HIS PRESENCE SAVED THEM:  IN HIS LOVE AND IN HIS PITY HE REDEEMED THEM; AND HE BARE THEM, AND CARRIED THEM ALL THE DAYS OF OLD.  Acts 12:11;  Exodus 19:4.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v7, I will mention:  Isaiah publicly proclaims GOD’S SAVING MERCIES (Psalm 77:12; 89:1).  The plural words Lovingkindnesses and praises refer to THE LORD’S MANY ACTS OF LOVE AND LOYALTY TO HIS PEOPLE.  The word Lovingkindnesses is translated “sure mercies” in 55:3 (see also Psalm 89:1).  v8, In the Hebrew BIBLE, the term MY people is used in two ways:  (1) for those who were united nationally to GOD by blood and history through Abraham’s flesh (48:1; Exodus 3:7), and (2) for those who were united to HIM inwardly through Abraham’s Faith and Obedience (Leviticus 26:12; Deuteronomy 29;13).  v9, Their affliction probably refers to GOD”S SYMPATHY FOR HIS PEOPLE IN EGYPT (Exodus 2:25; 3:7), and at the time of the judges (Judges 10:16).  HE WAS AFFLICTED:  GOD SHARES THE HURT OF HIS PEOPLE  (Exodus 2:23-25).  BORE AND CARRIED are allusions to Exodus 19:4 (see Deuteronomy 1:31; 32:10-12).

Amen.

Atoned/Atonement – CHRIST SACRIFICED HIMSELF FOR OUR SINS

“GOD’S DAY OF VENGEANCE AND REDEMPTION,” Isaiah 63:1) WHO IS THIS THAT COMETH FROM EDOM, WITH DYED GARMENTS FROM BOZRAH?  THIS THAT IS GLORIOUS IN HIS APPAREL, TRAVELING IN THE GREATNESS OF HIS STRENGTH?  I THAT SPEAK IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, MIGHTY TO SAVE.  2) Wherefore ART THOU RED IN THINE APPAREL, and THY GARMENTS like him that treadeth in the winefat?  Revelation 19:13.  3) I HAVE TRODDEN THE WINEPRESS ALONE; and of the people there was none with ME:  FOR I WILL TREAD THEM IN MINE ANGER, AND TRAMPLE THEM IN MY FURY; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon MY GARMENTS, AND I WILL STAIN ALL MY RAIMENT.  Lamentation 1:15.  4) FOR THE DAY OF VENGEANCE IS IN MY HEART, AND THE YEAR OF MY REDEEMED IS COME.  5) And I LOOKED and there was none to help; and I WONDERED that there was none to uphold:  THEREFORE MINE OWN ARM BROUGHT SALVATION UNTO ME; AND MY FURY, IT UPHELD ME.  John 16:32.  6) And I WILL TREAD DOWN THE PEOPLE IN MINE ANGER, AND MAKE THEM DRUNK IN MY FURY, AND I WILL BRING DOWN THEIR STRENGTH TO THE EARTH.  Revelation 16:6.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, The word COMES links this verse with 62:11.  Edom epitomized Israel’s enemies (Psalm 137:7; Lamentations 4:21, 22; Ezekiel 25:12; 35:1-15; Obadiah 13, 14); it was famous for its wine-making (see v. 3 for a reference to wine).  Note that the text does not say that GOD Vanquished (Defeat Thoroughly) Edom, but rather the “peoples” (vv. 3, 6).   GARMENTS:   See the warriors garments in 59:17.  Bozrah was the chief town of Edom (34:6; Jeremiah 49:13).  v2, The apparel will be red from bloodstains.  v3, I is Applied to CHRIST in Revelation 19:15.  The winepress represents the battle.  v4-6, Year Of MY Redeemed:  This   phrase alludes to the “law of redemption” of slaves and property (61:2; Leviticus 25).

Quest Study Bible  – v1, “Edom … Bozrah,”  Bozrah which means fortress, was the capital city of Edom, to the south and east of Israel.   v1-6, “Who is talking to whom?”  Isaiah, as a Prophet, plays the role of watchman guarding the city of Jerusalem.  He asks in effect, “Who goes there?”  and discovers IT IS THE LORD, SPEAKING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, MIGHTY TO SAVE.  v2, “Winepress,”  A large vat or trough where several people could work together stomping out grapes to squeeze out the juice so it could be drained off and collected.  The process left their feet and clothing stained by the red grape juice.  v5, SCRIPTURE LINK This Verse is similar to 59:16 and the meaning of the two Verses is the same:  GOD RESCUES HIS PEOPLE HIMSELF BECAUSE THERE IS NO ONE ELSE TO DO IT.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-6, The Prophet, In Vision, Beholds THE MESSIAH RETURNING IN TRIUMPH FROM THE CONQUEST OF HIS ENEMIES, of whom Edom was a type.  Travelling, Not As Wearied By The Combat, But, IN THE GREATNESS OF HIS STRENGTH, PREPARED TO OVERCOME EVERY OPPOSING POWER.  MESSIAH DECLARES THAT HE HAD BEEN TREADING THE WINE-PRESS OF THE WRATH OF GOD, Revelation 14:19; 19:13.  BY HIS OWN POWER, without any human help, HE HAD CRUSHED HIS OBSTINATE (STUBBORN, UNYIELDING) OPPOSERS, For The Day Of Vengeance Was Determined On, Being The Appointed Season For Rescuing HIS CHURCH.  Once, HE APPEARED ON EARTH IN APPARENT WEAKNESS, TO POUR OUT HIS PRECIOUS BLOOD AS AN ATONEMENT FOR OUR SINS; BUT IN DUE TIME HE WILL APPEAR IN THE GREATNESS OF HIS STRENGTH.  The Day Of Vengeance, Fixed And Determined On, Approaches;  Let Sinners Seek To Be Reconciled To Their RIGHTEOUS JUDGE, ERE (IN TIME) HE BRINGS DOWN THEIR STRENGTH TO THE EARTH.  DOES CHRIST SAY, “I COME QUICKLY?”  Let Your Hearts Reply, “Even So, Come; Let The Year Of The Redeemed Come.”

Psalm 105, A Psalm of Praise (compare Psalm 113), focuses on the positive experiences of Israel in their early history.  Contrast Psalm 106, which reviews the same period of history but with an emphasis on the faithlessness of the people.  This Poem Celebrates GOD’S FAITHFULNESS TO HIS COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM IN THE LIVES OF HIS PEOPLE.  The People Needed To Remember To Be FAITHFUL TO GOD, WHO HAD NEVER FORGOTTEN TO BE FAITHFUL TO THEM.  Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary.

“O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD,” III, Psalm 105:24) And HE (GOD) INCREASED HIS PEOPLE GREATLY; AND MADE THEM STRONGER THAN THEIR ENEMIES.  25) HE TURNED their heart to hate HIS PEOPLE, to deal subtilly with HIS Servants.  26) HE SENT MOSES HIS Servant; And Aaron Whom HE Had Chosen.  27) They Shewed HIS SIGNS Among them, And WONDERS in the land of Ham.  28) HE SENT DARKNESS, And Made It Dark; and they rebelled not against HIS WORD.  Psalm 99:7.  29) HE TURNED THEIR WATERS INTO BLOOD, AND SLEW THEIR FISH.  30) Their land brought forth Frogs in abundance, in the chambers of their kings.  31) HE SPAKE, and there came divers sorts of Flies, and Lice in all their coasts.  32) HE GAVE them Hail for rain, and Flaming Fire in their land.  33) HE SMOTE their Vines also and Fig Trees, and Brake the trees of their coasts.  34) HE SPAKE, and the Locusts came, and Caterpillars, and that without number,  35) And did Eat Up All The Herbs in their land, and Devoured the Fruit of their ground.  36) HE SMOTE ALSO THE FIRSTBORN IN THEIR LAND, the Chief of all their strength.  Genesis 49:3.  37) HE BROUGHT THEM FORTH (THE ISRAELITES) Also With Silver And Gold” And There Was Not One Feeble Person Among Their Tribes.  38) Egypt was glad when they departed:  For The FEAR Of Them Fell Upon Them.  39) HE SPREAD A CLOUD FOR A COVERING; AND FIRE TO GIVE LIGHT IN THE NIGHT.  40) The people asked, and HE Brought Quails, and Satisfied them with The Bread Of Heaven.  Exodus 16:12.  41) HE OPENED THE ROCK, And The Waters Gushed Out, They (The Waters) Ran In The Dry Places Like A River.  42) FOR HE REMEMBERED HIS HOLY PROMISE, AND ABRAHAM HIS SERVANT.  Genesis 15;4.  43) AND HE BROUGHT FORTH HIS PEOPLE WITH JOY, AND HIS CHOSEN WITH GLADNESS:  44) AND GAVE THEM The Lands Of The Heathen:  And They Inherited The Labour Of The People;  45) That They Might Observe HIS STATUTES (RULES OF THE COVENANT), AND KEEP HIS LAWS.  PRAISE YE THE LORD.  Deuteronomy 4:1.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v18-26, The psalmist recites the History Of The Plagues To Demonstrate THE LORD’S POWER.  The Plagues took place within time and space; they were THE ACTION OF GOD WITH HUMANS IN THE REAL WORLD.  The Order Of The Plagues is not followed strictly, and only eight of The Plagues are mentioned (Exodus 7–11).  v27-45, WITH GLADNESS:  This Poem Celebrates THE JOY OF THE LORD IN HIS ACTS OF DELIVERANCE.  GAVE THEM THE LANDS:  The Psalm was probably composed after the exile in Babylon.  A Celebration Of GOD’S GIFT OF LAND Would Have Been A Great Source Of Encouragement To The People That Had Just Returned To The Land.

Quest Study Bible – v24-45, SCRIPTURE LINK,  The Stories Of Israel’s Deliverance From Egypt, Travels In The Desert and Entrance Into The Land of Canaan Are Told In Exodus and Numbers.  v44, “Why Did GOD Give Israel The Lands Of Other People?”  It was not because Israel was more righteous or deserving.  GOD Expelled The Nations Of Canaan Because Of Their Wickedness.  Later Israel Was Punished For Sin In The Same Way When Assyria And Babylon Took Over The Land.  Also see article:  “What right did Israel have to take the land?”  (Numbers 33:52-52).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v24-45, As The Believer Commonly Thrives Best In His Soul When Under THE CROSS (or, The Will Of THE CROSS); So THE CHURCH Also Flourishes Most In TRUE HOLINESS, And Increases In Number, While Under Persecution.  Yet Instruments Shall Be Raised Up For Their Deliverance, And Plagues May Be Expected By (For) Persecutors.  And SEE THE SPECIAL CARE GOD TOOK OF HIS PEOPLE IN THE WILDERNESS.   All The Benefits Bestowed On Israel As A Nation, Were Shadows Of Spiritual Blessings With Which We Are BLESSED IN CHRIST JESUS.  HAVING REDEEMED US WITH HIS BLOOD, RESTORED OUR SOULS TO HOLINESS, AND SET US AT LIBERTY FROM SATAN’S BONDAGE, HE GUIDES AND GUARDS US ALL THE WAY.  HE SATISFIES OUR SOULS WITH THE BREAD OF HEAVEN, AND THE WATER OF LIFE FROM THE ROCK OF SALVATION, AND WILL BRING US SAFELY TO HEAVEN.  HE REDEEMS HIS SERVANTS FROM ALL INIQUITY, AND PURIFIES THEM UNTO HIMSELF, TO BE A PECULIAR PEOPLE, ZEALOUS OF GOOD WORKS.  Amen.

“O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD,” cont’d, Psalm 105:8) HE HATH REMEMBERED HIS COVENANT FOR EVER, THE WORD WHICH HE COMMANDED TO A THOUSAND GENERATIONS.  Luke 1:72.  9) WHICH COVENANT HE MADE WITH ABRAHAM, AND HIS OATH UNTO ISAAC;  Genesis 22:16; Hebrews 6:17.  10) AND CONFIRMED THE SAME UNTO JACOB FOR A LAW, AND TO ISRAEL FOR AN EVERLASTING COVENANT:  11) Saying, UNTO THEE WILL I GIVE THE LAND OF CANAAN THE LOT OF YOUR INHERITANCE:  12) When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it.  Genesis 34:30.  13) When they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;  14) HE SUFFERED (ALLOWED) no man to do them wrong:  yea, HE REPROVED (REBUKED) kings for their sakes;  Genesis 35:5.  15) Saying, TOUCH NOT MINE ANOINTED, AND DO MY PROPHETS NO HARM.  16) Moreover HE CALLED For A Famine Upon The Land:  HE BRAKE The Whole Staff Of Bread (HE DESTROYED All Their Supplies Of Food).  17) HE Sent A Man Before Them, Even Joseph, Who Was Sold For A Servant:  Genesis 37:28.  18) Whose feet they hurt with fetters:  he was laid in iron:  19) Until the time that HIS (GOD’S WORD) came:  THE WORD OF THE LORD TRIED him.  20) The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free.  21) He (the king) made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:  22) To bind his princes at his (Jacobs) pleasure; and teach his (the king’s) senators wisdom.  23) Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.  Genesis 46:6.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v7, 8, The psalmist assured his audience that even if they did not remember, GOD DOES REMEMBER.  HE REMEMBERS:  The Words Of The Original Promise To Abraham Set Out THE LORD’S Obligation In Strong Terms (Genesis 12:1-3).  These ideas are reinforced by the Dramatic Encounter With Abraham In Genesis 15.  In the Story of the binding of Isaac in Genesis 22, THE LORD UNDERTAKES AN IRREVOCABLE OATH OF OBLIGATION (Genesis 22:16-18).  v9-15, When they went:   This section is an overview of the history of Israel, probably written after the return of the exiles from Babylon (Psalm 147).  The Major Theme Of The Poem Is GOD’S FAITHFULNESS TO HIS PEOPLE IN THEIR EARLY HISTORY.  v16, 17, The experiences of Joseph occupy a long section of The Book of Genesis (Genesis 37–50).  Here Joseph’s story is recounted as poetry and song.  v18-26, The psalmist recites the History Of The Plagues To Demonstrate THE LORD’S POWER.  The Plagues took place within time and space; they were THE ACTION OF GOD WITH HUMANS IN THE REAL WORLD.  The Order Of The Plagues is not followed strictly, and only eight of The Plagues are mentioned (Exodus 7–11).

Quest Study Bible – v8-10, SCRIPTURE LINK, “HIS COVENANT,”  THE PROMISE That The People Of Israel Would Possess The Land Of Canaan (v. 11).  This PROMISE Was Made To Abraham (Genesis 22:15-18), Isaac (Genesis 26:3) and Jacob (Genesis 35:11-12).  v15, “MY ANOINTED ONES,”  Generally Means Specially Set Apart And Consecrated For GOD’S USE ONLY.  In This Case It Refers To The Prophets. MESSIAH AND CHRIST BOTH MEAN THE ANOINTED ONE (see NIV text note at Matthew 1:17).   v17, SCRIPTURE LINK, Joseph’s story can be found in Genesis 37, 39-48.

John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v23, Israel also came into Egypt  That is, Jacob, as afterwards expressed, who had the name of Israel, from his Wrestling With GOD and prevailing. He came into Egypt, being invited by Pharaoh, and having heard of his son Joseph being alive, and of his exaltation.  And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham:
the same with Egypt; Mizraim, from whence Egypt has its name, being the son of Ham, ( Genesis 10:6 ) . Hence Egypt is called by Plutarch F11 Chemia; and Diodorus Siculus F12 speaks of a city in Thebais, or Upper Egypt, which was called by the inhabitants Chemmis, interpreted by them the city of Pan; and Plutarch.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-23, Let Us Remember THE REDEEMER’S MARVELOUS WORKS, HIS WONDERS, AND THE JUDGMENTS OF HIS MOUTH.  Though True Christians are few (in) number, strangers and pilgrims on earth, yet a Far Better Inheritance Than Canaan Is Made Sure (Guaranteed) To Them By THE COVENANT OF GOD; And If We Have THE ANOINTING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, None Can Do Us Any Harm.  Afflictions Are Among Our Mercies.  They Prove Our Faith And Love, They Humble Our Pride, They Wean Us From The World, And Quicken Our Prayers.  Bread is the staff (the resource) which supports life; when that staff is broken, the body fails and sinks to the earth.  THE WORD OF GOD IS THE STAFF (THE RESOURCE) OF SPIRITUAL LIFE, The Food And Support Of The Soul:  The Sorest Judgment IS A FAMINE OF HEARING THE WORD OF THE LORD.  Such A Famine Was Sore In All Lands When CHRIST APPEARED IN THE FLESH; WHOSE COMING, AND THE BLESSED EFFECT OF IT, Are Shadowed Forth In The History Of Joseph.  AT THE APPOINTED TIME CHRIST WAS EXALTED AS MEDIATOR; ALL THE TREASURES OF GRACE AND SALVATION ARE AT HIS DISPOSAL, Perishing Sinners Come To HIM, And Are RELIEVED BY HIM (FOR HIS SALVATION).  Amen.

“O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD,” Psalm 105:1) O Give Thanks Unto THE LORD, Call Upon HIS NAME:  Make Known HIS DEEDS Among The People.  Isaiah 12:4.  2) Sing Unto HIM, Sing Psalms Unto HIM:  Talk Ye Of All HIS WONDROUS WORKS.  3) Glory Ye In HIS HOLY NAME:  Let The Heart Of Them Rejoice That SEEK THE LORD.  4) SEEK THE LORD, AND HIS STRENGTH:  SEEK HIS FACE EVER MORE.  5) REMEMBER HIS MARVELLOUS WORKS THAT HE HATH DONE; HIS WONDERS, AND THE JUDGMENTS OF HIS MOUTH;  Deuteronomy 8:2.  6) O ye seed of Abraham HIS Servant, ye children of Jacob HIS Chosen.  7) HE IS THE LORD Our GOD:  HIS JUDGMENTS ARE IN ALL THE EARTH.  Isaiah 26:9.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1-6, The psalmist calls to memory what GOD DID FOR HIS PEOPLE IN FULFILLMENT Of THE COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM.  Remember is the Key Word of the Psalm:  The psalmist wanted to remind GOD’S People Of HIS GOODNESS.   v7, 8, The psalmist assured his audience that even if they did not remember, GOD DOES REMEMBER.

Quest Study Bible – v1, “Why was history important?”  GOD Reminded The People Of HIS MIRACLES Interwoven Throughout Their History—How HE HAD DELIVERED THEM FROM THEIR ENEMIES AND CARED FOR THEM IN TIMES OF NEED.  HE HAD RESCUED THEM From Egyptian Bondage And Given The Entire Nation A New Birth.  Using History Was A Means To Call Israel Back To Its Roots, WARNING THE PEOPLE OF JUDGMENT AND EXHORTING THEM TO REPENT.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, Our Devotion Is Here Stirred Up, that we may stir up ourselves to PRAISE GOD.  SEEK HIS STRENGTH, THAT IS, HIS GRACE; THE STRENGTH OF HIS SPIRIT To Work In Us That Which Is Good, Which We Cannot Do But By STRENGTH DERIVED FROM HIM, For Which HE WILL BE SOUGHT (OR, MUST BE SOUGHT).  SEEK TO HAVE HIS FAVOR TO ETERNITY, Therefore Continue SEEKING IT, While Living In This World, For HE WILL Not Only Be Found, But HE WILL REWARD THOSE THAT DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM.

“Let The Church Say Amen,”  Andre Crouch featuring Marvin Winans

Zion, historically, Zion was the rock out-cropping between two valleys in Jerusalem.  Later, the Term came to mean the entire western ridge of early Jerusalem, and still later, to Jerusalem, itself (Psalm 126:1).  This area was originally inhabited by the Jebusites (II Samuel 5:7), later becoming the City of David.  Here David Consecrated his palace, acquired the threshing floor of Araunah (II Samuel 24:16), there erected an Altar, and there Solomon built HIS (GOD”S) TEMPLE.  Spiritually, the Term applies to the City of David (I Chronicles 11;5), to The Church Of GOD (Isaiah 2:3; Hebrews 11:10; 12:22).  And to The Heavenly City (Hebrews 12:22-24).

“Zion’s New Name,” III, Isaiah 62:10) Go through, go through The Gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a Standard (A Level of Acceptable Quality) for the people.  11) Behold, THE LORD Hath Proclaimed Unto The End Of The World, Say Ye To The Daughter Of Zion, Behold, Thy SALVATION COMETH; Behold, HIS REWARD IS WITH HIM, And HIS WORK BEFORE HIM.  12) And They Shall Call Them, The Holy People, The Redeemed Of THE LORD:  And thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, Gates probably refers to those in The “Holy Courts” (v. 9).  The Prophet commanded the Worshipers of v. 9 to pass through The Gates in order to Praise THE LORD.  Prepare the way means to encourage the people to come to THE TEMPLE For Worship (40:3, 4; 57:14).  Stones refers to any impediment to Worship (57:14).  Lift up a Banner (Standard) (5:26; 11:10) is an encouragement to all peoples To Worship GOD.  v11, Proclaimed to the end of the world links this verse with “a Banner for the peoples” in v. 10.  The verb say is plural, indicating that a number of people will declare this Announcement Of SALVATION to Jerusalem.  v12, The pronoun they refers to the Gentiles (v. 2).  The Holy People:  For similar descriptions of The Redeemed,  see 4:3; Exodus 19:6.

Quest Study Bible – v10, “Why build a road for the people?”  Rebuilding the fallen City of Jerusalem Pictures SALVATION.  The road repairs illustrates the Israelites’ return to Jerusalem, The Way That Leads To SALVATION.  GOD WOULD MAKE HIS SALVATION AVAILABLE TO All OF HIS PEOPLE.  Amen.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v10-12, ROOM WILL BE MADE FOR CHRIST’S SALVATION; ALL DIFFICULTIES SHALL BE REMOVED.  HE BRINGS A REWARD OF COMFORT AND PEACE WITH HIM; But A Work Of Humiliation and Reformation (Is) Before HIM; And They  (HIS CHURCH) Shall Be Called The HOLY People, And, The REDEEMED Of THE LORD.  HOLINESS Puts Honor And Beauty Upon Any Place Or Person, Makes Them Admired, Beloved, And Sought After.  Many Events May Have Been Part Fulfillment’s Of This, As Earnest (Truth) Of More Glorious Times Yet To Come.  The Close Connection Between The Blessedness Of The Jews And Of The Gentiles, Runs Through The Scriptures.  THE LORD JESUS WILL COMPLETE HIS WORK, AND HE NEVER WILL FORSAKE ONE WHOM HE HAS REDEEMED AND SANCTIFIED.  Amen.

“Grateful,” Hezekiah Walker

“Zion’s New Name,” cont’d, Isaiah 62:6) I Have Set Watchman Upon Thy Walls, O Jerusalem, Which Shall Never Hold Their Peace Day Or Night:  Ye That Make Mention Of THE LORD, Keep Not Silence.  7) And Give HIM No Rest, Till HE Establish, And Till HE Make Jerusalem A Praise In The Earth.  8) THE LORD HATH SWORN BY HIS RIGHT HAND, AND BY THE ARM OF HIS STRENGTH, SURELY I WILL NO MORE GIVE THY CORN TO BE MEAT FOR THINE ENEMIES; AND THE SONS OF THE STRANGER SHALL NOT DRINK THY WINE, FOR THE WHICH THOU HAST LABOURED.  9) But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and Praise THE LORD; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in The Courts Of MY HOLINESS.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v6, 7, I refers to THE LORD (vv. 1, 8).  Watchmen refers to Prophets (56:10).  You who make mention of THE LORD is Isaiah’s synonym (meaning the same thing) for “watchmen” and shows that the Prophets were intercessors.  The phrases do not keep silent and give HIM no rest relate the Prophets’ Prayer to THE LORD’S Promises in v. 1 (see 64:12; 65:6).  v8, no longer:  This phrase gives Assurance that The Covenantal Blessings will outlast the curses.  v9, in MY Holy Courts:  This phrase anticipates the rebuilding of THE HOLY TEMPLE (Leviticus 23:39, 40; Deuteronomy 12:17, 18; 14:22-27; 16:9-17).

Quest Study Bible – v7, “Can we Tire GOD Out with our prayers?”  No.  But The Bible Sometimes Pictures GOD As Having Physical Human Characteristics.  This Verse simply urges GOD”S People To Pray Until Their Prayers Are Answered.  Though Prayers do not Literally Wear GOD Out, HE DOES RESPOND TO PERSISTENCE (Luke 18:1-8).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v6-9, GOD’S Professing People Must Be A Praying People.  HE Is Not Displeased With Us For Being Earnest, As Men Commonly Are; HE Bids Us To Cry After HIM, And Give HIM No Rest.  Luke 11:5-6.  It Is A Sign That GOD Is Coming To A People In MERCY, WHEN HE POURS OUT A SPIRIT OF PRAYER UPON THEM.  See how uncertain our creature comforts are.  See Also GOD’S MERCY In Giving Plenty, And PEACE To Enjoy It.  Let Us Delight In Attending THE COURTS OF THE LORD, THAT WE MAY ENJOY THE CONSOLATIONS OF HIS SPIRIT.
