“Judgment and Salvation,” VI,  Isaiah 65:1) I AM SOUGHT of them that asked not for ME; I AM found of them that sought ME not:  I SAID, BEHOLD ME, BEHOLD ME, unto a nation that was not CALLED BY MY NAME.  Romans 10:20.  2) I HAVE SPREAD OUT MY HANDS ALL THE DAY unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;  Romans 10:21.  3) A people that provoketh ME to anger continually to MY FACE; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;  Leviticus 17:5.  4) Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;  5) Which say, stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou.  These are a smoke in MY NOSE, a fire that burneth all day.  6) Behold, It Is Written Before ME:  I WILL NOT KEEP SILENCE, BUT WILL RECOMPENSE, EVEN RECOMPENSE into their bosom.  Malachi 3:16.  7) Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, SAITH THE LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed ME upon the hills; therefore will I MEASURE their former work into their bosom.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, I WAS SOUGHT means “I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE SOUGHT.”  I WAS FOUND means “I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BE FOUND.”  A nation that was not CALLED BY MY NAME includes the Gentiles and the remnant who “sought” GOD (v. 10).  Together they are the servants who will be called “by another name.”  v2, I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS pictures GOD beckoning Israel to Respond To HIM.  All day long suggests patience.  Rebellious describes Israel (63:10).  Who, repeated six times in vv. 2-5, introduces a sorry catalog of Israel’s abominable religious practices:  arrogance (v. 2), open defiance (v. 3), idolatrous fertility rites (v. 3), divination (v. 4), and blasphemous self-righteousness (v. 5).  v3, To MY FACE means “openly.”  The people did not hide their shameful practices or restrain their evil habits.   v4, Spend the night in the tombs (remain among the graves) may refer to the practice of seeking an oracle from the dead.  The Law prohibited eating swine’s flesh (66:17; Leviticus 11:7).  v5, I am holier than you:  The idolaters regarded themselves as better than others.  Smoke and fire stand for things that provoke GOD’S ANGER.  v6, It Is Written refers to Heavenly Records.  I WILL NOT KEEP SILENCE  see 62:1, For Zion’s sake Will I NOT HOLD MY PEACE,  v7, blasphemed ME:  The   Israelites rejected and offended GOD by offering sacrifices to the false gods of other nations on the hill-tops.

Quest Study Bible – v1, “Why did GOD come to those who didn’t care?”  GOD came to them not because of, but in spite of, the fact that they did not care.  Left to ourselves, none of us would Care About GOD.  But HE Initiates A Relationship; HE COMES despite our inability to see our own need.  In fact, the human heart cannot respond to GOD until after GOD HAS SOMEHOW TOUCHED IT.  Some speak of GOD”S “PREVENIENT GRACE”—GRACE THAT COMES BEFORE WE CAN MOVE TOWARDS GOD (1 John 4:19, We Love HIM, Because HE FIRST LOVED US.)  v3-4,  “How did they Provoke THE LORD?”   Other than worshiping idols, its not entirely clear what the people were doing.  Some suggest that they may have been practicing some sort of nature cults in the gardens or perhaps even necromancy (black arts) in the graveyards.  Furthermore, GOD HAD COMMANDED THAT their Altar be of uncut stone, not brick (Exodus 20:25) and that they eat clean meat, not unclean (Leviticus 11).  Also see “Why were uncut stones needed for the Altar?”  (Joshua 8:31).  v5, “Why would people think they were too holy for GOD?”  Because of their idolatry.  Some Israelites had tried to serve both THE LORD and the false gods.  But these people no longer attempted to play that game.  They had dedicated themselves to worshiping idols, and wanted nothing at all to do with THE ONE TRUE GOD.  Apparently they thought that if they associated with THE LORD as well, the effectiveness of their idolatry and incantations would be cancelled.  v7, “What did it mean to pay back into their laps (bosom)?”   This pictures someone seated with a cloth or shawl in his or her lap, into which grain was poured (Ruth 3:15).  It symbolized THE JUDGMENT GOD WOULD POUR UPON THOSE WHO HAD COMMITTED THESE TERRIBLE IDOLATRIES.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, The Gentiles Came To Seek GOD, And Find HIM, Because They Were First Sought And Found By HIM.  Often HE meets some thoughtless trifler or profligate opposer, And Says To him, BEHOLD ME; And A Speedy Change Takes Place.  ALL THE GOSPEL DAY, CHRIST WAITED TO BE GRACIOUS.  The Jews were bidden, but would not come.  It is not without cause they are Rejected Of GOD.  They would do what most pleased them.  They grieved, they Vexed THE HOLY SPIRIT.  They forsook GOD”S TEMPLE, and sacrificed in groves.  They cared not for the distinction between clean and unclean meats, before it was taken away by THE GOSPEL.  Perhaps this is put for all forbidden pleasures, and all that is thought to be gotten by sin, that abominable thing which THE LORD HATES.  CHRIST PRONOUNCED MANY WOES AGAINST THE PRIDE AND HYPOCRISY OF THE JEWS.  The proof against them is plain.  And let us watch against pride and self-preference, remembering that every sin, and the most secret thoughts of man’s heart, are known AND WILL BE JUDGED BY GOD.
