“THE YEAR OF THE LORD’S FAVOR,”  Isaiah 61:1) THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD GOD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE THE LORD HATH ANOINTED ME TO PREACH GOOD TIDINGS UNTO THE MEEK; HE HATH SENT ME TO BIND UP THE BROKENHEARTED, TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES, AND THE OPENING OF THE PRISON TO THEM THAT ARE BOUND;  Psalm 34:18; Hosea 6:1.  2) TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR Of THE LORD, AND THE DAY OF VENGEANCE OF OUR GOD; TO COMFORT ALL THAT MOURN;  Malachi 4:1, 3.  3) TO APPOINT UNTO THEM THAT MOURN IN ZION, TO GIVE UNTO THEM BEAUTY FOR ASHES, THE OIL OF JOY FOR MOURNING, THE GARMENT OF PRAISE FOR THE SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS; THAT THEY MIGHT BE CALLED TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, THE PLANTING Of THE LORD, THAT HE MIGHT BE GLORIFIED.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, THE LORD HAS ANOINTED:  THE NAME MESSIAH, Or CHRIST in Greek, means the “ANOINTED ONE.”  Poor also means “humble,” which like brokenhearted, indicates those who confidently Hope In GOD in spite of their present distress (11:4; Psalm 34:18; 51:17).  Proclaim liberty probably alludes to the official Inauguration of the “Year of Release” or Jubilee (Leviticus 25:10).  Captives refers to those in bondage to wickedness.  Those who are bound is translated “prisoners” in 49:9, here it means “captives.”  v2, THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD corresponds to “THE DAY OF SALVATION” (49:8) and the Year of MY Redeemed” (63:4).  v3, A host lavished on a guest the oil of joy (Psalm 23:5; 45:7; Luke 7:46).  HE MAY BE GLORIFIED:  For similar references see 44:23; 49:5.

Quest Study Bible – v1-2, SCRIPTURE LINK, When JESUS PREACHED HIS FIRST SERMON In HIS Hometown Synagogue, HE READ THESE VERSES AND SAID THAT THEY WERE FULFILLED THAT DAY.  See Luke 4:16-19.  v3, “Why wear ashes?”  In the Bible, the ashes left behind after a fire had burned out were, were understandably, a sign of destruction.  When people experienced troubles, they sometimes sat on an ash pile (58:5) or put ashes on their heads (2 Samuel 13:19) as a sign of mourning.  But GOD PROMISES HIS PEOPLE THAT THEIR MOURNING WILL END; in place of ashes, they will well-groomed with Oil, A Symbol Of Joy And Celebration.  Also see “What was good and pleasant about oil poured on the head?”  (Psalm 133;2).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-3, The Prophets Had The Holy Spirit Of GOD At Times, Teaching them what to say, and causing them to say It; BUT CHRIST HAD THE SPIRIT ALWAYS, WITHOUT MEASURE TO QUALIFY HIM, AS MAN, FOR THE WORK TO WHICH HE WAS APPOINTED.  The poor are commonly best disposed to receive The Gospel, James 2:5; and IT is only likely to Profit us when Received with Meekness.  To such as are poor in Spirit, CHRIST PREACHED GOOD TIDINGS WHEN HE SAID, BLESSED ARE THE MEEK.  CHRIST’S Satisfaction Is Accepted.  By the domination of sin in us, we are bound under the power of Satan; But THE SON IS READY BY HIS SPIRIT, TO MAKE US FREE; AND THEN WE SHALL BE FREE INDEED (John 8:36).  Sin and Satan were to be destroyed; And CHRIST Triumphed Over them ON HIS CROSS.  But the children of men, who stand out against these Offers, shall be Dealt with as enemies.  CHRIST WAS TO BE A COMFORTER, AND SO HE IS, HE IS SENT TO COMFORT ALL WHO MOURN, AND WHO SEEK TO HIM, AND NOT TO THE WORLD, FOR COMFORT.  HE WILL DO ALL THIS FOR HIS PEOPLE, That They May Abound In The Fruits Of RIGHTEOUSNESS, As The Branches Of GOD’s PLANTING.  Neither THE MERCY OF GOD, THE ATONEMENT OF CHRIST (APPEASING OF GOD), NOR THE GOSPEL OF GRACE, Profits the self-sufficient and proud.  They must be Humbled, and Led to know their own character and wants, BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, that they may See and Feel their Need Of The Sinner’s FRIEND AND SAVIOUR.  HIS DOCTRINE CONTAINS GLAD TIDINGS Indeed To Those Who Are Humbled Before GOD.  Amen.
