Iniquity – Wickedness, Vice

“Sin, Confession and Redemption,” Isaiah 59:1) Behold, THE LORD’S HAND Is Not Shortened, That IT Cannot SAVE Neither HIS EAR Heavy, That IT Cannot HEAR:  Numbers 11:23; Isaiah 50:2.  2) But your iniquities have separated between you and your GOD, and your sins have Hid HIS FACE from you, that HE WILL NOT HEAR.  3) For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.  Romans 3:15.  4) None Calleth for Justice, nor any Pleadeth for Truth; they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.  Job 15:35.  5) They hatch cockatrice’ (vipers) eggs, and weave the spider’s web;  he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper (when one is broken an adder (venomous snake) is hatched).  6) Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works:  their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.  7) Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood:  their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.  8) The Way of Peace they know not; and there is no Judgment in their goings; they have made them crooked paths:  whosoever goeth therein shall not know Peace.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, 2, THE LORD’S EAR IS ABLE TO HEAR.  v3,  your hands are defiled with blood:  For similar Passages on the people’s guilt, see 1:15; 59:7.  Your lips have spoken lies:  For related Passages see 33:15; 59:13; Mark 7:21-23; Romans 3:10-18; Galatians 5:19-21.  v4, Calls for Justice probably to help the poor in the Law courts.  No one would plead the case of the poor fairly (1:17; 5:23; 59:14).  Conceive evil and bring forth iniquity is translated “conceive trouble and bring forth futility” in Job 15:35.  v5, Hatch … eggs and weave the … web signify the deliberate, calculated wickedness in the courts (32:7; 59:4).  v6, Their webs will not become garments illustrates the futility and ultimate failure of the schemes depicted in v. 5.  v7, 8, This Passage is cited in Romans 3:15-17 to document the universality of sin.  Their feet … make haste to shed innocent blood:  The people run without forethought into evil (Proverbs 1:16).

Quest Study Bible – v2, “Why Won’t GOD Listen To Sinners?”  GOD Does Listen To Sinners When They Genuinely Repent Of Their Sins And Ask GOD For Forgiveness, for example, GOD Listens And Answers.  So Isaiah’s statement needs to be understood within its context.  Isaiah was telling the people of his day that even though GOD Could Help Them, HE CHOSE NOT TO.  GOD WOULD NOT LISTEN TO THEIR PRAYERS AND RELIGIOUS RITUALS.  They wanted GOD to help them when they were in trouble, But They Didn’t Want To Serve HIM With All Their Hearts.  They didn’t want to abandon their wicked ways or their foreign idols.  If They Wouldn’t Listen To HIM, WHY SHOULD HE LISTEN TO THEM?  THE BIBLE TEACHES THAT GOD ANSWERS PRAYERS.  JESUS TELLS US THAT WE CAN SPEAK TO GOD as a child speaks to his father (Matthew 6:6).  GOD Cares For HIS People And Responds To Their Prayers Simply Because HE LOVES THEM.  The Irony (Signifying the Opposite) Is That When HE REFUSES TO ANSWER Requests, It’s For The Same Reason—BECAUSE OF HIS LOVE.  A father shows Love when he allows his children to learn from mistakes.  If he always protects his child, how will that child ever learn and mature?  GOD RESPONDS IN LOVE When HE Does Not Come To The Rescue Of HIS People who continue to live in Disobedience TO HIS COMMANDS.  Also see article:  “When Does GOD Refuse To Hear Our Prayers?”  (Jeremiah 11:11).

Quest Study Bible – v3, “What were the people guilty of?”  Among other things listed here, the people were guilty of violence, lying, injustice, hostility, rebellion, treachery, oppressing the weak and turning from GOD (vv. 3-21).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-8, If Our Prayers Are Not Answered, and The Salvation we wait for is not wrought for us, it is not because GOD Is Weary Of Hearing Prayer, but because we are weary of praying.  See here sin in true colors, exceedingly sinful; and see sin in its consequences, exceedingly hurtful, Separating From GOD, and so separating us, not only from all Good, but to all evil.  Yet numbers feed, to their own destruction, on infidel (unbelief) and wicked systems.  Nor can their skill or craft, in devising schemes, as the spider weaves its web, deliver or save them.  No schemes of self-wrought salvation shall avail those Who Despise THE REDEEMER’S ROBE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.  Every man who is destitute of THE SPIRIT OF CHRIST, runs swiftly to evil of some sort; but those regardless of DIVINE TRUTH AND JUSTICE, are strangers to Peace.   v9-15, If we shut our eyes against THE LIGHT Of DIVINE TRUTH, It Is JUST FOR GOD TO HIDE FROM OUR EYES The Things That Belong To Our PEACE.  The sins of those who profess themselves GOD’S PEOPLE, ARE WORSE THAN THE SINS OF OTHERS.  And The Sins Of A Nation Bring Public JUDGMENTS, When Not Restrained By Public JUSTICE.  Men may murmur under calamities, but nothing will Truly Profit while they REJECT CHRIST AND HIS GOSPEL  Amen.
