“Comfort For The Contrite (Repentant),” Isaiah 57:14) And Shall Say, Cast Ye Up, Prepare The Way, Take Up The Stumblingblock Out Of The Way Of MY People.  15) For Thus Saith The High And Lofty ONE That Inhabiteth Eternity, WHOSE NAME IS HOLY; I DWELL IN THE HIGH AND HOLY PLACE, With him Also That Is Of A Contrite And Humble Spirit, To Revive The Spirit Of The Humble, And To Revive The Heart Of The Contrite Ones.  Zechariah 2:13; Psalm 34:18.

 Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v14, The phrase one shall say resembles “The voice of one crying” (40:2).  Heap it up resembles “Every valley shall be exalted” (40:4).  Prepare the way repeats the appeal of 40:3 (see also 11:16; 35:8-10; 62:10).  Stumbling block probably refers to the idolatry describes in vv. 3–13.    v15, High and Lofty may be rephrased as “Exceedingly Lofty” (2:11; 6:1; 52:13).  GOD Is Above Everyone–Perfect And Holy.  Inhabits Eternity:  Not Only Is GOD Eternal, Without Beginning Or Ending, HE Transcends (Goes Beyond) Time Itself.  In this way HE Is Able To Give All HIS Time To Each Of HIS People.  High And Holy may be rephrased as “Unsearchably High” (32:15; 33:5, 16).  Contrite and humble may be rephrased as “genuinely humble,” referring to those who Submit and Repent Under GOD’S Judgment (Psalm 34:17, 18; 51:17; 1 Peter 5:6).

Vitringa interprets this of the Waldenses and Bohemian brethren; but it seems to respect later times.

Quest Study Bible – v15, “Where Does God Live?”  The Bible often describes Heaven As GOD’S Home (Matthew 6:9, for example).  It also speaks of GOD Living Among Or Within HIS People (John 1:14, for example).  Here Isaiah combines both ideas in a beautiful way:  GOD LIVES IN HEAVEN, But HE Also Lives With Humble People To Give Them Hope And Confidence.  Also see “Where Does God Live?” (Micah 1:3).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v14-21, When Troubles Last Long, Even Good Men Are Tempted To Entertain Hard Thoughts Of GOD.  Therefore HE WILL NOT CONTEND (STRIVE, STRUGGLE WITH Man), For Ever, For HE WILL NOT FORSAKE THE WORK OF HIS OWN HANDS, NOR DEFEAT THE PURCHASE OF HIS SON’S BLOOD.  COVETOUSNESS Is A Sin that particularly lays men under THE DIVINE Displeasure.  See The Sinfulness Of Sin.  See Also That Troubles Cannot Reform Men Unless GOD’S GRACE Work(s) In Them.  PEACE Shall Be Published (Made Public), PERFECT PEACE.  It Is The Fruit Of Preaching Lips, And Praying Lips.  CHRIST CAME AND PREACHED PEACE TO GENTILES, AS WELL AS TO THE JEWS; To After-Ages, Who Were Afar Off In Time, As Well As To Those Of That Age.  But the wicked would not be healed by GOD’S GRACE, Therefore Would Not Be Helped By HIS Comforts.  Their ungoverned lusts and passions made them like the troubled sea.  Also The Terrors Of Conscience Disturbed Their Enjoyments.  GOD HATH SAID IT, AND ALL THE WORLD CANNOT UNSAY IT.  That There Is No PEACE To Those Who Allow Themselves In Any Sin.  If We Are Recovered From Such An Awful State, IT IS ONLY BY THE GRACE OF GOD.  AND THE INFLUENCES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND THAT NEW HEART, From Whence Comes GRATEFUL PRAISE, THE FRUIT Of Our Lips, ARE HIS GIFT.  SALVATION, With All Fruits, Hopes, And Comforts, IS HIS WORK, AND TO HIM BELONGS ALL THE GLORY.  There Is No Peace For The Wicked Man; But Let The Wicked Forsake his Way, And The Unrighteous Man his Thoughts; And Let him RETURN TO THE LORD, AND HE WILL HAVE MERCY UPON him, AND (RETURN) TO OUR GOD, AND HE WILL ABUNDANTLY PARDON.  Amen.
