“GOD’S Accusation Against The Wicked,” III, Isaiah 57:3) But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer and the whore. 4) Against whom do ye sport yourselves?  against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue?  are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood.  5) Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?  6) Among the smooth stones of the steam (or, ravines) is thy portion; they, they are thy lot:  even to them hast thou poured a drink offering, thou hast offered a meat offering.  Should I Receive Comfort In These?  7) Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed:  even thither (there) wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.  Ezekiel 23:41.  8) Behind the doors also and the posts hast thou set up thy remembrance:  for thou hast discovered thyself to another than ME, and art gone up; thou hast enlarged thy bed, and made thee a covenant with them; thou lovedst their bed where thou sawest it (their nakedness).  9) And thou wentest to the king with ointment, and didst increase thy perfumes, and didst send thy messengers far off, and didst debase thyself even unto hell.  10) Thou art wearied in the greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou not, There is no Hope:  thou hast found the life of thine hand (strength); therefore thou wast not grieved (faint).  11) And of whom hast thou been afraid or feared, that thou hast lied, and hast not remembered ME, nor laid it to thy heart?  Have Not I Held MY PEACE Even Of Old, and thou fearest ME not?  12) I Will Declare (Expose) thy righteousness, and thy works; for they shall not profit thee.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v3, 4, Adulterer and harlot allude to the perverse Canaanite fertility rites that threatened the culture of ancient Israel.  v5, Green tree was associated with pagan fertility rites.  Slaying the children was associated with the worship of Molech and with demon worship.  v6, Immoral idolatry was the people’s portion and lot, instead of THE LORD (Deuteronomy 4:19, 20; Psalm 16:5; 142;5).  v7, A high mountain refers to a place for idolatrous practices (Jeremiah 3:6; Ezekiel 16:16; Micah 1:3-5).  The word bed is associated with sexual aspects of idolatry (Ezekiel 23;17; Hosea 4:13).  sacrifice:  Animal and grain offerings were also part of pagan worship.  v8, Remembrance may refer to a pagan cultic (a particular system religious worship, a body of admirers) symbol in the home.  made a covenant:  is here used in the context of obscene behavior associated with pagan worship.  nudity:  The Hebrew word is the regular term for “hand.”  Here appears to be a euphemism (a mild word used instead of a harsh word) for the male genitals.  v9, King probably refers to the Ammonite god Molech (1 Kings 11:7), whose name means “king.”  Sheol (Hell) alludes to the gods of the underworld.  v10, There is no hope:  The people found a counterfeit life in immorality and idolatry that would only lead to Permanent Death.  v11, Lied here refers to infidelity to THE LORD.  THE LORD HELD HIS PEACE BY NOT SENDING JUDGMENT IMMEDIATELY (42:14; 48:9; 2 Peter 3:9).  v12, your righteousness:  Here this phrase is Stated In Sarcasm And Irony (58:2, 3; 64:6).

Quest Study Bible – Quest Study Bible – v5, “What was going on among the oaks?”  Idolatry.  See Sacred oaks … gardens (1:29).  v8, “What sort of pagan symbols did they use?”   In The Law the People Of GOD were Commanded to place GOD”S COMMANDS on their doors to Remind Them Of THE LORD CONTINUALLY (Deuteronomy 6:9).  Here the Prophet says that, instead of GOD”S COMMANDS, they had placed the symbols of idolatry on heir doors.  Since the idolatry included sexual orgies, it is possible the symbols were themselves sexual in nature.  v9, Molech  was the primary god of the Ammonites and was worshiped by some Canaanites.  Worship of Molech included human sacrifice.  See Molech (Jeremiah 32:35).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v3-12, THE LORD Here Calls Apostates (those who no longer Believe In Christ) and hypocrites to Appear Before HIM.  When Reproved for their sins, and Threatened With Judgments, they ridiculed THE WORD OF GOD.  The Jews were guilty of idolatry before the captivity; but not after that affliction.  Their zeal in the worship of false gods, may shame our indifference in THE WORSHIP OF THE TRUE GOD.  The service of sin is disgraceful slavery; those who thus debase themselves to hell, will justly have their portion there.  Men incline to a religion that inflames their unholy passions.  They will follow any evil, however great or vile, if they think it will atone for crimes, or purchase indulgence for some Favorite Lust.  This explains idolatry, whether pagan, Jewish, or anti-Christian.  But those who set up anything instead of GOD, For Their Hope And Confidence, Never Will Come To A Right End.  Those Who Forsake THE ONLY RIGHT WAY, Wander In A Thousand By-paths.  The Pleasures O Sin Soon Tire, But Never Satisfy.  Those Who Care Not For THE WORD OF GOD AND HIS PROVIDENCES (His Protective Care And Will For Our Lives), Show They Have No FEAR OF GOD.   Sin Profits Not; IT RUINS AND DESTROYS.  Amen.
