“Judas Hangs Himself,” Matthew 27:1) When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people Took Counsel Against Jesus To Put Him To Death:  2) And When They Had Bound Him, They Led Him Away, And Delivered Him To Pontius Pilate The Governor.  Acts 3:13.  3) Then Judas, Which Had Betrayed Him, when he saw That He Was Condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,  2 Corinthians 7:10.  4) Saying, I Have Sinned In That I Have Betrayed The Innocent Blood.  And they said, What is That to us?  see thou to that.   5) And he cast down the pieces of silver in The Temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.  2 Samuel 17:23; Acts 1:18.  6) And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is The Price Of Blood.  7) And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in,  8) Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.  9) Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy (Jeremiah) The Prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, The Price Of Him That Was Valued, Whom they of the children of Israel did value;  Zechariah 11:12.  10) And gave them for the potter’s field, As The Lord Appointed me.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, This was the third Jewish trial.  The first two were illegal because the were held at night.  The third held when morning came and was a “rubber stamp” of the one vv. 57-68.  v2, Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Samaria and Idumea from A.D. 26-36.  Because the Jews did not have authority to execute Jesus (see John 18:31), they Brought Him To Pilate.  v3, 4, Judas felt remorse because he had not planned for this to happen; he may have Betrayed Jesus In Order To Force Him To Take Action Against His Enemies And Inaugurate Him Kingdom.  v5, Acts 1:18 says that the death of Judas was because of a headlong fall.  The likely explanation is that Judas hanged himself on a tree, only to have the rope or branch break.  v6, The religious leaders suddenly became very scrupulous about the Law.  Because of Deuteronomy 23:18, it was felt that blood money should not be used for religious purposes.  v7, 8,  Originally this plot of ground was known as the potter’s field, a place where potter’s dug for clay.  It was purchased as a cemetery for strangers who died in Jerusalem.  It is likely that Gentiles were also buried there.  v9,10, The Prophesy is found in Zechariah 11:12, 13; however Matthew states that the Prophecy was spoken by Jeremiah and recorded by Zechariah.

Quest Study Bible – v9-10, “Why did Matthew credit Zechariah with something Jeremiah said?”  Some say that Matthew made a mistake.  Others say some later scribe did.  Other solution’s suggest that Matthew combined Jeremiah’s material (see Jeremiah 18:2; 19:1, 11) with Zachariah’s statement (see Zachariah 11:12-13) but attributed it to Jeremiah because he was the Major Prophet.  Also it was customary to allude to an entire Section of The Bible by the name of the first Book In That Section.  It may be that in Matthew’s day Jeremiah was the first of The Prophetic Books.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-10, Wicked men see little of the consequences of their crimes when they commit them, but they must answer for them all.  In the fullest manner Judas acknowledged to the chief priests that he had sinned, and betrayed an innocent person.  This Was Full Testimony To The Character Of Christ, but the elders were hardened.  Casting down the money, Judas departed and went and hanged himself, Not Being Able To Bear The Terror Of Divine Wrath, and the anguish of despair.  There is little doubt but that the death of Judas was before that of our Blessed Lord.  But was it nothing to them that they had Thirsted After This Blood, and hired Judas to Betray It, and had condemned it to be shed unjustly?  Thus Do Fools Make A Mock At Sin.  Thus Many Make Light Of Christ Crucified.  AND IT IS A COMMON INSTANCE OF THE DECEITFULNESS OF OUR HEARTS, TO MAKE LIGHT OF OUR SIN BY DWELLING UPON OTHER PEOPLE’S SINS.  But The Judgment Of God Is According To Truth.  Many Apply This Passage Of The Buying The Piece Of Ground With The Money Judas Brought Back, To Signify The Favor Intended By The Blood Of Christ To Strangers, And Sinners Of The Gentiles.  It Fulfilled A Prophecy, Zachariah 11:12.  Judas Went Far Toward Repentance, Yet It Was Not To Salvation.  He Confessed, But Not To God; He (Judas) Did Not Go To Him (God) And Say, I Have Sinned, Father, Against Heaven.  Let Know Be Satisfied With Such Partial Convictions As A Man May Have, And Yet Remain Full Of Pride, Enmity (Hate), And Rebellion.  Amen.
