“Be Blessed,” Yolanda Adams
Sanhedrin Council – A legislative body of 71 members and headed by the high priest. It could condemn to death but could not execute (Matthew 26:3, 57). This was done by the Romans alone. Jesus (Matthew 26:59), Peter and John (Acts 4), Stephen (Acts 6:12) and Paul (Acts 22:30) were tried before it.
“BEFORE THE SANHEDRIN,” Matthew 26:57) And they that had Laid Hold On Jesus Led Him Away To Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Mark 14:53; Luke 22;54. 58) But Peter Followed Him Afar Off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, To See The End. 59) Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, Sought False Witness Against Jesus, To Put Him To Death; 60) But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses. 61) And said, This Fellow Said, I am able to destroy The Temple Of God, And To Build It In Three Days. John 2:19. 62) And the high priest arose, and said unto Him, Answerest Thou Nothing? what is it which these witness against Thee? 63) But Jesus Held His Peace. And the high priest answered and said unto Him, I adjure (request) Thee by The Living God, that Thou tell us whether Thou Be The Christ, The Son Of God. Isaiah 53:7. 64) Jesus Saith Unto him, Thou Hast Said: Nevertheless I Say Unto You, Hereafter Shall Ye See The Son Of Man Sitting On The Right Hand Of Power, And Coming In The Clouds Of Heaven. Psalm 110:1. 65) Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He Hath Spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard His blasphemy. Job 1:20; Isaiah 36:21, 22. 66) What think ye? They answered and said, He Is Guilty Of Death. Leviticus 24:16; 1 Thessalonians 2:14, 15. 67) Then did they Spit In His Face, And Buffeted Him With The Palms Of Their Hands, 68) Saying, Prophesy unto us, Thou Christ, Who is he that Smote Thee? Mark 14:65.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v57, Jesus Was Subjected To Six Trials—Three Jewish Trials and Three Gentile Trials. The First Jewish Trial was before Annas, who was not the high priest, but was a powerful influence on the high priest office. The Second Trial was before Caiaphas and the Jewish council. The council had been hastily called together in anticipation of Passing Judgment On Jesus. Matthew does not mention Jesus’ Trial before Herod Antipas (see Luke 23:6-12); he also combines the Two Trials Before Pilate into one (27:2; 11-26). Jesus’ opponents were trying desperately to find some legal basis for Condemning Him To Death. v58, Peter and John were both granted entrance into the courtyard because John was known to the high priest. The servants were probably house servants, not members of the mob who Arrested The Lord. v59-61, This was a misquotation to say that Jesus Had Spoken Against The Temple, but it was an action for which they could Condemn Him (see Acts 6:13, 14). v62, The high priest must have recognized that the accusers had no case Against Jesus. In Maintaining His Silence, Jesus Fulfilled The Prophecy Of Isaiah 53:7. v62, I put You Under Oath by The Living God: The high priest thought he needed to put Christ Under Oath. Christ Needed No Oath; He Had Indicated His Divine Nature And Unity With The Father On Several Occasions (see John 8:58; 10:30-33). v64, Jesus Answered the high priest’s Request (v. 63) In The Affirmative And Then Fortified His Answer By Applying Two Clearly Messianic Passages To Himself: Psalm 110:1 and Daniel 7:13. v65-6(8), Jesus’ Claim Of Sitting At The Right Hand Of God (v. 64) Was An Assertion Of Deity And Was, to this unbelieving high priest, a clear case of blasphemy.
Quest Study Bible – v57-68, SCRIPTURE LINK, Mark tells about Jesus’ Trial Before The Sanhedrin in Mark 14:53-65. John tells about it in John 18:12-13, 19-24. v63, “Why Did Jesus Refuse To Answer The False Charges?” These same men had resisted and twisted Jesus’ Words Before. Why Should He Speak To Them Now? This was a biased, hostile trial—not an impartial hearing. The unfair and contradictory charges did not deserve a response. Jesus, Did Answer, However, when the high priest Pressured Him Further, And Charged Him Under Oath To Repeat The Claims Jesus Had Made Throughout His Ministry (vv. 63-64).
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v57-68, Jesus Was Hurried Into Jerusalem. It Looks Ill, And Bodies Worse, When Those Who Are Willing To Be Christ’s Disciples, Are Not Willing To Be Known To Be So. Here Began Peter’s Denying Him: For To Follow Christ Afar Off, Is To Begin To Go Back From Him. It Is More Our Concern To Prepare For The End, Whatever It May Be, Than Curiously To Ask What The End Will Be. The Event Is God’s, But The Duty Is Ours. Now The Scriptures Were Fulfilled, Which Said, False Witnesses, Are Risen Up Against Me. Christ Was Accused, That We Might Not Be Condemned; And If At Any Time We Suffer Thus, Let Us Remember We Cannot Expect To Fare Better Than Our Master. WHEN CHRIST WAS MADE SIN FOR US, HE WAS SILENT, AND LEFT IT TO HIS BLOOD TO SPEAK. Hitherto, Jesus Had Seldom Professed Expressly To Be The Christ, The Son Of God; The Tenor (Meaning) Of His Doctrine Spoke It, And His Miracles Proved It; But Now He Would Not Omit To make An Open Confession Of It. It Would Have Looked Like Declining His Sufferings. He Thus Confessed, As An Example And Encouragement To His Followers, To Confess Him Before Men, Whatever Hazard They Ran. Disdain, Cruel Mocking, And Abhorrence, Are The Sure Portion Of The Disciple As They Were Of The Master, From Such As Would Buffet And Deride (Ridicule) The Lord Of Glory. These Things Were Exactly Foretold In The Fiftieth Chapter Of Isaiah. Let Us Confess Christ’s Name, And Bear The Reproach, AND HE WILL CONFESS US BEFORE HIS FATHER’S THRONE. Amen.
