“Now Behold The Lamb,” Kirk Franklin
“JESUS ARRESTED,” Matthew 26:47) And While He Yet Spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. John 18:3; Acts 1:16. 48) Now he that Betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, That Same Is He: Hold Him Fast. 49) And forthwith he Came To Jesus, and said, Hail, Master; And Kissed Him. 2 Samuel 20:9. 50) And Jesus Said Unto him, Friend, Wherefore Art Thou Come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, And Took Him. 51) And, Behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. 52) Then Said Jesus Unto him, Put Up Again Thy Sword Into his Place; For All They That Take The Sword Shall Perish With The Sword. Genesis 9:6; Revelation 13:10. 53) Thinkest Thou That I Cannot Now Pray To My Father, And He Shall Presently Give Me More Than Twelve Legions (72,000 or more) Of Angels? 54) But How Then Shall The Scripture Be Fulfilled, That Thus It Must Be? Isaiah 53:7; Daniel 9:26. 55) In That Same Hour Said Jesus To The Multitudes, Are Ye Come Out As Against A Thief With Swords And Staves For To Take Me? I Sat Daily With You Teaching In The Temple, And Ye Laid No Hold On Me. 56) But All This Was Done, That The Scriptures Of The Prophets Might Be Fulfilled. Then all the Disciples Forsook Him, And Fled.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v47, 48, The fact that the multitude was armed with swords and clubs indicates that Judas did not really know The Heart Of Jesus. v49, The only person to address The Lord As Rabbi in The Book of Matthew was Judas (v. 25). Kissed means to kiss as a display of affection. v50, Friend: Jesus Offered Judas Friendship And Opportunity for him to change his mind. The Words Translated Why Have You Come may also mean “Do What You Have Come To Do.” v51, John 18:10 informs us that the impetus swordsman was Peter. v52, 53, A legion is the Roman was about 6,000 men. When one considers The Power Of One Angel, The Power Of More Than 72,000 Angels Is Beyond Comprehension. Jesus Had All Of Heaven’s Power At His Disposal, Yet He Refused To Use It. HIS FATHER’S WILL WAS FOR HIM TO GO TO THE CROSS. v54, IF JESUS HAD CALLED FOR ANGELIC AID, THE PROPHETIC SCRIPTURES FORETELLING HIS BETRAYAL, HIS DEATH, AND HIS RESURRECTION WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN FULFILLED. v55, 56, all the Disciples Forsook Him and fled: Compare Peter’s claim in v. 35 With Jesus’ Words In v. 41, “The Spirit Indeed Is Willing, But The Flesh Is Weak.”
Quest Study Bible – v47-56, SCRIPTURE LINK, Mark gives the details of Jesus’ Arrest in Mark 14:43-50. Luke gives them in Luke 22:47-53. v49, “Why did Judas Kiss Jesus?” A kiss was traditional greeting. A disciple would great his teacher with a kiss on the cheek or beard to show Honor and submission. The less important person initiated the kiss. This is the irony in this passage, that Judas would use something meant to give Honor to instead betray.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v47 – 56, No Enemies Are So Much To Be Abhorred As Those Professed Disciples That Betray Christ With A Kiss. God Has No Need Of Our Services, Much Less Of Our Sins, To Bring About His Purposes. Though Christ Was Crucified Through Weakness, It Was Voluntary Weakness; HE SUBMITTED TO DEATH. IF HE HAD NOT BEEN WILLING TO SUFFER, THEY COULD NOT CONQUER HIM. It Was A Great Sin For Those Who Had Left All To Follow Jesus, Now To Leave Him For They Knew Not What. What Folly, For Fear Of Death To Flee From Him, WHOM THEY KNEW AND ACKNOWLEDGED TO BE THE FOUNTAIN OF LIFE! Amen.
