“THE LORD’S SUPPER,”  Matthew 26:17) Now the first day of the Feast Of Unleavened Bread the Disciples came to Jesus, saying unto Him, Where Wilt Thou That We Prepare For Thee To Eat The Passover?  Exodus 12:6; Leviticus 23:5, 6.  18) And He Said, Go Into The City To Such A Man, And Say Unto him, The Master Saith, My Time Is At Hand; I Will Keep The Passover At Thy House With My Disciples.  19) And the Disciples Did As Jesus Had Appointed them, and they made ready The Passover.  20) Now When The Even Was Come, He Sat Down With The Twelve.  21) And As They Did Eat, He Said, Verily I Say Unto You, That One Of You Shall Betray Me.  22) And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say Unto Him, Lord, Is It I?  23) And He Answered And Said, he That Dippeth his hand With Me In The Dish, The Same Shall Betray Me.  Psalm 41:9.  24) The Son Of Man Goeth As It Is Written Of Him:  But Woe Unto That Man By Whom The Son Of Man Is Betrayed!  It Had Been Good For That Man If he Had Not Been Born.  Genesis 3:15; Psalm 22:1.  25) Then Judas, Which Betrayed Him, answered and said, Master, It It I?  He Said Unto him, Thou Hast Said.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v17-19, The First Day Of The Feast Of The Unleavened Bread is also The Day Of The Passover (v. 18).  The Disciples were Peter and John (see Luke 22:8).  v20, 21, One Of You Will Betray Me Indicates The Lord’s Omniscience.  Repeatedly—In Submission To The Father—Christ Unveiled Evidences Of His Deity To His Disciples.  v22, The Disciples had already heard That Jesus Was Going To Die In Jerusalem, But His Revelation Of Betrayal Was New.  Is It I expects a negative response.  The meaning is, “I’m not the one, am I?”  v23-25, The dish was a bowl of broth in which the guests dipped pieces of bread.

Quest Study Bible – v17-19,  SCRIPTURE LINK,  Details of The Passover Preparations are also recorded in Mark 14:12-16 and Luke 22:7-13.  v19, “How did the Disciples prepare for The Passover?”   Most importantly, they needed to acquire a lamb, take it to The Temple for slaughter and then roast it whole as prescribed by Jewish Law (Exodus 12:8-9).  They also would have had to purchase specific items required for The Passover meal, prepare the food and set the table.  v26-29, SCRIPTURE LINK, Jesus’ Use Of Bread And The Cup To Symbolize His Body And Blood Can Also Be Seen In Mark 14:22-25 and Luke 22:17-20.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v17-25, Observe, the place for their eating The Passover Was Pointed Out By Christ To His Disciples.  He Knows Those Hidden Ones Who Favor His Cause, And Will Graciously Visit All Who Are Willing To Receive Him.  The Disciples Did As Jesus Had Appointed.  Those Who Would Have Christ’s Presence In The Gospel Passover, Must Do What He Says.  It Well Becomes The Disciples Of Christ Always To Be Jealous (Vigilant, Guarding) Over Themselves, Especially In Trying Times.  We Know Not How Strongly We May Be Tempted, Nor How Far God May Leave Us To Ourselves, Therefore We Have Reason Not To Be High-minded, But To Fear.  Heart Searching Examination And Fervent Prayer Are Especially Proper Before The Lord’s Supper, That, As Christ Our Passover Is Now Sacrificed For Us, We May Keep This Feast, Renewing Our Repentance, Our Faith In His Blood, And Surrendering Ourselves To His Service.  Amen.
