“Because Of Who You Are,” Vicki Yohe
“THE LORD’S SUPPER,” cont’d, Matthew 26:26) And As They Were Eating, Jesus Took Bread, And Blessed It, And Brake It, And Gave It To The Disciples, And Said, Take, Eat; This Is My Body. 1 Corinthians 10:16. 27) And He Took The Cup, And Gave Thanks, And Gave It To Them, Saying, Drink Ye All Of It; 28) For This Is My Blood Of The New Testament, Which Is Shed For Many For The Remission Of Sins. Exodus 24:8; Leviticus 17:11. 29) But I Say Unto You, I Will Not Drink Henceforth Of This Fruit Of The Vine, Until That Day When I Drink It New With You In My Father’s Kingdom. Acts 10:41. 30) And When They Had Sung A Hymn, They Went Out Into The Mount Of Olives.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v26, This Is My Body means “This Symbolizes My Body” (see 1 Corinthians 10:4). v27, 28 This Is My Blood Of The New Covenant refers to The Covenant That Had Been Promised In The Old Testament (see Jeremiah 31:31-34; 32:37-44; Ezekiel 34:25-31; 37:26-28). v29, 30, This Verse Anticipates God’s Kingdom When Christ Will Reign On The Throne Of David.
Quest Study Bible – v26-29, “How Did Jesus Change Passover?” Rather Than Change Passover, CHRIST FULFILLED IT (1 Corinthians 5:7), Infusing A Time Honored Practice With Profound New Meaning. For centuries, The Unleavened Bread Had Reminded God’s People Of Their Hasty Exit From Egypt (see Exodus 12:14-20, 39). Now The Bread Would Remind Jesus’ Followers Of His Body, Given As A Sacrifice For Their Sins. The lamb had recalled the blood that spared the Israelites from death (Exodus 12:3-13). Now The Cup Would Remind Jesus’ Followers Of His Blood And Its Saving Effects. v29, “Why Did Jesus Say He Would Not Drink Again?” Because Jesus Was Going To Die, He Wouldn’t Be Here On Earth To Eat Or Drink Anything. But When He Returns, He Will Celebrate Again In Perfect Fellowship With All His Followers. Even Now When Christians Celebrate The Lord’s Supper, THEY ARE NOT ONLY REMEMBERING HIS CRUCIFIXION BUT ALSO LOOKING AHEAD TO HIS SECOND COMING. Amen.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v26-30, This Ordinance Of The Lord’s Supper Is To Us The Passover Supper, By Which We Commemorate A Much Greater Deliverance Than That Of Israel Out Of Egypt. TAKE, EAT, ACCEPT OF CHRIST As He Is Offered To You, RECEIVE THE ATONEMENT (THE SACRIFICE OF CHRIST), Approve Of It, Submit To His Grace And His Government. Meat Looked Upon, Be The Dish Ever So Well Garnished, Will Not Nourish, It Must Be Fed Upon, So Must The Doctrine Of Christ. THIS IS MY BODY; That Is, Spiritually, It Signifies And Represents His Body. We Partake Of The Sun, Not By Having The Sun Put Into Our Hands, But The Beams Of It Darted Down Upon Us, So We Partake Of Christ By Partaking Of His Grace, AND THE BLESSED FRUITS OF THE BREAKING OF HIS BODY. THE BLOOD OF CHRIST Is Signified And Represented By The Wine. He Gave Thanks, To Teach Us To Look To God In Every Part Of The Ordinance (Law). This Cup He Gave To The Disciples With A Command, DRINK YE ALL OF IT. The Pardon Of Sin Is That Great Blessing Which Is, In The Lord’s Supper, Conferred On All True Believers, It Is The Foundation Of All Other Blessings. He Takes Leave Of Such Communion (Goes On To Say); And Assures Them Of A Happy Meeting Again At Last. “UNTIL THAT DAY WHEN I DRINK IT NEW WITH YOU,” May Be Understood Of The Joys And Glories Of The Future State, Which The Saints Shall Partake With The Lord Jesus. That Will Be The Kingdom Of His Father; The Wine Of Consolation Will There Be, Always New.
WHILE WE LOOK AT THE OUTWARD SIGNS OF CHRIST’S BODY BROKEN AND HIS BLOOD SHED FOR THE REMISSION OF OUR SINS Let Us Recollect That The Feast Cost Him As Much As Though He Had Literally Given His Flesh To Be Eaten And His Blood For Us To Drink. Amen And Praise God!
