“JESUS ANOINTED AT BETHANY,” cont’d, Matthew 26:8) But when His Disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?  9) For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.  10) When Jesus Understood It, He Said Unto Them, Why Trouble Ye The Woman?  For She Hath Wrought A Good Work Upon Me.  11) For Ye Have The Poor Always, With You; But Me Ye Have Not Always.  John 14:19.  12) For In That She Hath Poured This Ointment On My Body, She Did It For My Burial.  13) Verily I Say Unto You, Wheresoever This Gospel Shall Be Preached In The Whole World, There Shall Also This, That This Woman Hath Done, Be Told For A Memorial Of Her.  Romans 1:5; Romans 10:18.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v7-9, The costly fragrant oil (see Mark 14:3) was a perfume extracted from pure nard (an aromatic Himalayan plant).  She broke the flask and poured out the oil to cover Jesus’ Body (see Mark 14:3).  v10-13, Jesus Saw The Pouring Of The Fragrant Oil On His Body As An Anticipation Of His Death (see Mark 14:8).  The perfumed ointment was Placed On Jesus Before His Death; normally it would have used After His Death.

Quest Study Bible – v6-13, Mark tells about The Anointing Of Jesus at Bethany in Mark 14:3-9.  Luke and John give similar accounts in Luke 7:37-38 and John 12:1-8.   v6-13, “Is Matthew telling the same story as Mark, Luke and John?”   See “Is this the same story as Matthew, Luke and John?”  (Mark 14:3-9).

Quest Study Bible – v8-9, “Why were the Disciples indignant?”  They thought the woman’s actions were extravagant and wasteful because the perfume she poured out was so valuable.  It could have been sold and the money used for benevolent purposes.  However, it seems that the major complainer was Judas, whose real motive was not concern for the poor but personal greed (John 12:4-6).   v10, “Why Did Jesus Endorse Such Extravagance?”   This Was A Special Occasion—He Knew That He Would Soon Be Crucified.  In this impulsive act of Sacrifice, the woman Symbolically Prepared His Body For Burial.  It was a custom in those days to anoint the bodies of the dead with sweet-smelling oil or spices.  Jesus Had Already Emphasized The Ongoing Need To Help The Poor (25:35-36).  Now He Affirmed Another Important Principle:  IT IS NEVER A WASTE TO GIVE ONE’S BEST TO HONOR JESUS.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v6-13, The Pouring Ointment Upon The Head Of Christ Was A Token Of The Highest Respect (And Love).  When There Is True Love In The Heart To Jesus Christ, Nothing Will Be Thought Too Good To Bestow Upon Him.  The More Christ’s Servants And Their Services Are Cavilled At (Objected To), The More He Manifests His Acceptance.  This Act Of Faith And Love Was So Remarkable, That It Would Be Reported, As A Memorial Of Mary’s Faith And Love, To All Future Ages, And In All Places Where The Gospel Should Be Preached.  This Prophecy Is Fulfilled.  Amen.
