“Glory To The Lamb,” Geoffrey Golden
“THE SUFFERING AND THE GLORY OF THE SERVANT,” III, Isaiah 53:4) SURELY HE HATH BORNE OUR GRIEFS, AND CARRIED OUR SORROWS: YET WE DID ESTEEM HIM STRICKEN, SMITTEN OF GOD, AND AFFLICTED. 5) BUT HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS, HE WAS BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES: THE CHASTISEMENT OF OUR PEACE WAS UPON HIM; AND WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED. 6) All We Like Sheep Have Gone Astray; We have Turned Every One To His Own Way; AND THE LORD HATH LAID ON HIM THE INIQUITY OF US ALL 7) HE WAS OPPRESSED, AND HE WAS AFFLICTED, YET HE OPENED NOT HIS MOUTH: HE IS BROUGHT AS A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER, AND AS A SHEEP BEFORE HER SHEARERS IS DUMB, SO HE OPENETH NOT HIS MOUTH. 1 Peter 1:19. 8) HE WAS TAKEN FROM PRISON AND FROM JUDGMENT: AND WHO SHALL DECLARE HIS GENERATION? FOR HE WAS CUT OFF OUT OF THE LAND OF THE LIVING: FOR THE TRANSGRESSION OF my PEOPLE WAS HE STRICKEN. 9) AND HE MADE HIS GRAVE WITH THE WICKED, AND WITH THE RICH IN HIS DEATH; BECAUSE HE HAD DONE NO VIOLENCE, NEITHER WAS ANY DECEIT IN HIS MOUTH. Matthew 27:57.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v4, He Has Borne: Jesus Came To Suffer And Die For The Sins Of Others. Griefs—or pain—and sorrows—or sickness—refer to the consequences of sin. The people considered Christ To Have Been Smitten By God because the Law said, “he who is hanged [on a tree] is Cursed By God” (Deuteronomy 21:22, 23; Galatians 3:13). v5, The repetition of the pronouns He, Him, and His for our and we underscores the fact that The Servant Suffered In Our Place. Peace Sum’s Up The Servant’s Ministry Of Reconciliation(,) (2 Corinthians 5:17-21). By saying that they were healed (v. 4), the Remnant expressed its Faith In What God Had Announced In 52:13. v6, All we like sheep have gone astray: For a New Testament Perspective, see 1 Peter 2:25. v7, Opened Not His Mouth Speaks Of The Servants Willingness To Die For Sinners As A Lamb To The Slaughter. v8, Cut Off From The Land Of The Living: This language clearly indicates that The Servant Would Die. v9, Often in Hebrew poetry, the rich appear as synonymous with the wicked. At His Death: The Hebrew term death is in the plural, as a focus On The Deep Significance Of Christ’s Death.
John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – BUT HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS NOT FOR ANY OF HIS OWN, BUT FOR OURS, FOR OUR REBELLIONS AGAINST GOD, AND TRANSGRESSIONS OF HIS LAW, IN ORDER TO MAKE ATONEMENT (PAYMENT) AND SATISFACTION FOR THEM; THESE WERE THE PROCURING (ACQUIRED) AND MERITORIOUS CAUSES (HIS DESERVING OF A REWARD FOR) OF HIS SUFFERINGS AND DEATH, AS THEY WERE TAKEN UPON HIM BY HIM TO ANSWER FOR THEM TO DIVINE JUSTICE, WHICH ARE MEANT BY HIS BEING WOUNDED; FOR NOT MERELY THE WOUNDS HE RECEIVED IN HIS HANDS, FEET, AND SIDE, MADE BY THE NAILS AND SPEAR, ARE MEANT, BUT THE WHOLE OF HIS SUFFERINGS, AND ESPECIALLY HIS BEING WOUNDED TO DEATH, AND WHICH WAS BY BEARING THE SINS OF HIS PEOPLE; AND HEREBY HE REMOVED THE GUILT FROM THEM, AND FREED THEM FROM THE PUNISHMENT DUE UNTO THEM: HE WAS BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES; AS BREAD CORN IS BRUISED BY THRESHING IT, OR BY ITS BEING GROUND IN THE MILL, AS THE MANNA WAS; OR AS SPICE IS BRUISED IN A MORTAR, HE BEING BROKEN AND CRUSHED TO PIECES UNDER THE WEIGHT OF SIN, AND THE PUNISHMENT OF IT. The ancient Jews understood THIS OF THE MESSIAH; in one place they say F15, “chastisements are divided into three parts, one to David and the fathers, one to our generation, and one to THE KING MESSIAH; AS IT IS WRITTEN, “HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS; AND BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES”: and in another place F16, “at that time they shall declare to THE MESSIAH the troubles of Israel in captivity, and the wicked which are among them, that do not mind to know THE LORD; HE SHALL LIFT UP HIS VOICE, AND WEEP OVER THE WICKED AMONG THEM; AS IT IS SAID, “HE WAS WOUNDED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS”” THE CHASTISEMENT OF OUR PEACE WAS UPON HIM; THAT IS, THE PUNISHMENT OF OUR SINS WAS INFLICTED ON HIM, WHEREBY OUR PEACE AND RECONCILIATION WITH GOD WAS MADE BY HIM; for chastisement here does not design the chastisement of a father, and in love, such as THE LORD CHASTISES HIS PEOPLE WITH; BUT AN ACT OF VINDICTIVE JUSTICE, AND IN WRATH, TAKING VENGEANCE ON OUR SINS, OF OUR SURETY (SACRED SACRIFICE), WHEREBY DIVINE WRATH IS APPEASED, JUSTICE IS SATISFIED, AND PEACE IS MADE (WITH GOD THE FATHER): AND WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED; or “BY HIS STRIPE” F17, or “BRUISE”: PROPERLY THE BLACK AND BLUE MARK OF IT, SO CALLED FROM THE GATHERING AND SETTLING OF THE BLOOD WHERE THE BLOW IS GIVEN. Sin is a disease belonging to all men, a natural, hereditary, nauseous, and incurable one, BUT BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST; FORGIVING SIN IS A HEALING OF THIS DISEASE; AND THIS IS TO BE HAD, AND IN NO OTHER WAY, THAN THROUGH THE STRIPES AND WOUNDS, THE BLOOD AND SACRIFICE, OF THE SON OF GOD. CHRIST IS A WONDERFUL PHYSICIAN; HE HEALS BY TAKING THE SICKNESSES OF HIS PEOPLE UPON HIMSELF, BY BEARING THEIR SINS, AND BEING WOUNDED AND BRUISED FOR THEM, AND BY HIS ENDURING BLOWS, AND SUFFERING DEATH ITSELF FOR THEM. The Targum is, “WHEN WE OBEY HIS WORDS, OUR SINS WILL BE FORGIVEN US;” BUT FORGIVENESS IS NOT THROUGH OUR OBEDIENCE, BUT THE BLOOD OF CHRIST. Amen.
Quest Study Bible – v4-5, SCRIPTURE LINK, See Matthew 8:17; 1 Peter 2:24. Matthew Saw Jesus Healing People And Thought Of This Text. Peter extended the Image—When Christ Died, He Bore Our Sins In His Body On The Cross. v5, “How can a Substitute Suffer The Punishment For Our Sins?” By killing innocent animals, the Israelites made a covering for their sins Before The Coming Of The Perfect Sacrifice. In retrospect, the writer of Hebrews declares it impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. These were merely Symbols Of Christ, Who Was Sacrificed Once To Take Away The Sins Of Many People (Hebrews 9:28; 10:4). v5, “How are we healed by wounds given to someone else?” A modern analogy (comparison) might be a heart transplant: one person lives because another dies. That physical analogy pictures The Spiritual Healing God Makes Available To Us. The Bible Shows Humanity With A Heart Condition—our hearts are evil, incapable of the Wholeness and Holiness God Intended. The Servant, Pure Of Heart, Suffers And Dies So That We Can Live. v6-7, “How are we like sheep?” We go astray. The Bible depicts sheep as helpless and rather ignorant. They do not keep themselves safe, but wander into dangerous situations. v7, SCRIPTURE LINK, See John 1:29. John the Baptist Hailed Jesus As The Lamb Of God, Who Takes Away The Sin Of The World, Alluding To The Passover Sacrifice (EXODUS 12) And To This Text. At The Beginning Of His Public Ministry, Jesus Was Already Heading Toward His Sacrificial Death. v7, 8, SCRIPTURE LINK, See Acts 8:32-35. This Text by Isaiah was being read by the Ethiopian official when Philip approached him. Like some modern readers, the official wasn’t sure Who The Passage Was Describing. Philip explained That It Was About Jesus. v9, SCRIPTURE LINK, See 1 Peter 2:22. Peter was writing to Suffering Christians. But he wanted to make sure they were suffering Righteously and not just being punished for wrongs they had done. He used this Verse from Isaiah as an Image Of Righteous Suffering And Silent Endurance.
MATTHEW HENRY’S CONCISE BIBLE COMMENTARY – v4-9, IN THESE VERSES IS AN ACCOUNT OF THE SUFFERING OF CHRIST; ALSO OF THE DESIGN OF HIS SUFFERINGS. IT WAS FOR OUR SINS, AND IN OUR STEAD, THAT OUR LORD JESUS SUFFERED. WE HAVE ALL SINNED, AND HAVE COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD. SINNERS, HAVE THEIR BELOVED SIN, THEIR OWN EVIL WAY, OF WHICH THEY ARE FOND. OUR SINS DESERVE ALL GRIEFS, AND SORROWS, EVEN THE MOST SEVERE. WE ARE SAVED FROM THE RUIN, TO WHICH BY SIN WE BECOME LIABLE, BY LAYING OUR SINS ON CHRIST. THIS ATONEMENT WAS TO BE MADE FOR OUR SINS. AND THIS IS THE ONLY WAY OF SALVATION. OUR SINS WERE THE THORNS IN CHRIST’S HEAD, THE NAILS IN HIS HANDS AND FEET, THE SPEAR IN HIS SIDE. HE WAS DELIVERED TO DEATH FOR OUR OFFENCES. BY HIS SUFFERINGS HE PURCHASED FOR US THE SPIRIT AND GRACE OF GOD, TO MORTIFY (SHAME) OUR CORRUPTIONS, WHICH ARE THE DISTEMPERS (ILLS) OF OUR SOULS. WE MAY WELL ENDURE OUR LIGHTER SUFFERINGS, IF WE LOVE HIM WHO FIRST LOVED US. Amen.
