“Glory To The Lamb,” Geoffrey Golden
“THE SUFFERING AND THE GLORY OF THE SERVANT,” IV, Isaiah 53:10) YET IT PLEASED THE LORD TO BRUISE HIM, HE HATH PUT HIM TO GRIEF: WHEN THOU SHALT MAKE HIS SOUL AN OFFERING FOR SIN, HE SHALL SEE HIS SEED, HE SHALL PROLONG HIS DAYS, AND THE PLEASURE OF THE LORD SHALL PROSPER IN HIS HAND. 11) HE SHALL SEE OF THE TRAVAIL OF HIS SOUL, AND SHALL BE SATISFIED: BY HIS KNOWLEDGE SHALL MY RIGHTEOUS SERVANT JUSTIFY MANY; FOR HE SHALL BEAR THEIR INIQUITIES. 12) THEREFORE WILL I DIVIDE HIM A PORTION WITH THE GREAT, AND HE SHALL DIVIDE THE SPOIL WITH THE STRONG; BECAUSE HE HATH POURED OUT HIS SOUL UNTO DEATH: AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS; AND HE BARE THE SIN OF MANY, AND MADE INTERCESSION FOR THE TRANSGRESSORS. Mark 15:28.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, It Pleased The Lord: The Old Testament Pointed To The Doctrine Of The Atonement Long Before Jesus Died For Our Sins. The Father Was Pleased That His Son Should Die Because It Would Cover The Sins Of Many And Reconcile Them To Himself (see v. 11). Offering refers to the “trespass offering,” The Sacrifice of the ram For The Lord’s Atonement For Sin. v11, Knowledge means having insight into one’s mission (see 52:13). Justify Means To Acquit From Guilt And Declare Righteous (5:23). v12, As The Great King, The Lord Will Divide The Spoil Of Victory With His Servant (41:8; 52:13). Great And Strong Correspond To The Servant’s Condition After His Rejection. Suffering, And Death. Amen.
Quest Study Bible – v10, “Guilt suffering,” In the Israelite sacrificial system, a guilt offering was made for unintentional (or even unknown) violations. A person brought an untainted ram to the Priest for sacrifice, made restitution as necessary and paid a fine (Leviticus 5:14-19). v12, “How Would God Reward His Suffering Servant?” If Israel is the Servant, the Reward is a return to their own land and the new freedom and wealth that would result. But Christians see a hint of Resurrection In This Verse. Though The Servant-Messiah Dies In Disgrace, Great Honor Awaits Him (Philippians 2:6-11). This Is The Language Of A Conquering King Sharing The Spoils Of Victory.
Quest Study Bible – v10, “Why Did God Allow His Servant To Suffer?” Isaiah Emphasizes The Purpose Of God. Something Great Is Happening Here, the Prophet says. Cyrus will make it happen, The Servant Will Make It Happen, But It Will Happen Because God Will’s It (55:11). Though this part of Isaiah is clearly written to the Jews in Babylonian captivity, the nations are part of this drama, too. All of humanity is in captivity, in one sense or another. It Is God’s Purpose To Set Us Free. The Whole Bible Is This Phenomenal Love Story—God Creates People, people turn away, God Woos People Back. Israel is the microcosm (a smaller version of something much larger) of humanity. God Plays The Love Scene Again And Again Through Moses, David, Elijah, Hosea And Isaiah. But Too Often His Love Goes Unrequited (Unreturned and Unrewarded). The Sin Of Rejecting Divine Love Requires Sacrifice And God Decided To Make The Sacrifice Himself. He Would Send His Innocent Servant To Bear The Weight Of The World’s Sin. This Would Clear The Way For A New Relationship Between God And The People He Loves So Much. It Might Seem Gruesome In The Face Of It—Unjust And Blood Thirsty. But It Is God’s Purpose. The Suffering Of God’s Servant Is The Key To His Plan; That God Was Reconciling The World To Himself In Christ, Not Counting Men’s Sins Against Them (2 Corinthians 5:19). Amen.
MATTHEW HENRY’S CONCISE BIBLE COMMENTARY – v10-12, COME, AND SEE HOW CHRIST LOVED US! WE COULD NOT PUT HIM IN OUR STEAD, BUT HE PUT HIMSELF. THUS HE TOOK AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD, BY TAKING IT ON HIMSELF. HE MADE HIMSELF SUBJECT TO DEATH, WHICH TO US IS THE WAGES OF SIN. OBSERVE THE GRACES AND GLORIES OF HIS STATE OF EXALTATION. CHRIST WILL NOT COMMIT THE CARE OF HIS FAMILY TO ANY OTHER. GOD’S PURPOSES SHALL TAKE EFFECT. AND WHATEVER IS UNDERTAKEN ACCORDING TO GOD’S PLEASURE SHALL PROSPER. HE SHALL SEE IT ACCOMPLISHED IN THE CONVERSION AND SALVATION OF SINNERS. THERE ARE MANY WHOM CHRIST JUSTIFIES, EVEN AS MANY AS HE GAVE HIS LIFE A RANSOM FOR. BY FAITH WE ARE JUSTIFIED; THUS GOD IS MOST GLORIFIED, FREE GRACE MOST ADVANCED (TO THE UTMOST), SELF MOST ABASED (HUMBLED AND REPENTANT), AND OUR HAPPINESS SECURED. WE MUST KNOW HIM, AND BELIEVE IN HIM, AS ONE THAT BORE OUR SINS, AND SAVES US FROM SINKING UNDER THE LOAD, BY TAKING IT UPON HIMSELF. SIN AND SATAN, DEATH AND HELL, THE WORLD AND THE FLESH, ARE THE STRONG FOES HE HAS VANQUISHED. WHAT GOD HAD DESIGNED FOR THE REDEEMER HE SHALL CERTAINLY POSSESS. WHEN HE LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE, HE RECEIVED GIFTS FOR MEN, THAT HE MIGHT GIVE GIFTS TO MEN.
WHILE WE SURVEY THE SUFFERINGS OF THE SON OF GOD, LET US REMEMBER OUR LONG CATALOG OF TRANSGRESSIONS, AND CONSIDER HIM AS SUFFERING UNDER THE LOAD OF OUR GUILT. HERE IS LAID A FIRM FOUNDATION FOR THE TREMBLING SINNER TO REST HIS SOUL UPON. WE ARE THE PURCHASE OF HIS BLOOD, AND THE MONUMENTS OF HIS GRACE; FOR THIS HE CONTINUALLY PLEADS AND PREVAILS, DESTROYING THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL. Amen and Hallelujah!!!!
