God’s Elect – Saved through Justification: The Action of Declaring or Making Righteous In The Sight Of God Through The Shed Blood Of His Son Jesus Christ.
“Israel’s Sin And The Servant’s Obedience,” cont’d, Israel 50:4) The Lord God Hath Given Me The Tongue Of The Learned, A Word In Season To him that is weary: He Wakeneth Morning By Morning, He Wakeneth Mine Ear To Hear As The Learned. Matthew 11:28. 5) The Lord God Hath Openeth Mine Ear, And I Was Not Rebellious, Neither Turned Away Back. Philippians 2:8; Hebrews 10:5. 6) I Gave My Back To The Smiters, And My Cheeks To Them That Plucked Off The Hair: I Hid Not My Face From Shame And Spitting. 7) For The Lord God Will Help Me; Therefore Shall I Not Be Confounded: Therefore Have I Set My Face Like A Flint, And I Know That I Shall Not Be Ashamed. 8) He Is Near That Justifieth Me; Who Will Contend With Me? Let Us Stand Together: Who Is Mine Adversary? Let him Come Near To Me. 1 Corinthians 4:4. 9) Behold, The Lord God Will Help Me; Who Is he That Shall Condemn Me? Lo, They All Shall Wax Old As A Garment; The Moth Shall Eat Them Up. Hebrews 1:11, 12.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v4, The Title Lord God is emphasized in this section (vv. 5, 7 , 9). The Lord Educated The Servant’s Tongue. The word Learned is translated elsewhere as “disciple” (8:16). The Lord Awakens The Servant’s Ear To Hear. v5, Opened: The Opening Of The Ear Canal as a Symbol For Hearing And Obeying. v6, People sometimes struck the back of a fool. Pulling someone’s beard was a sign of contempt and disrespect ( 2 Samuel 10:4, 5). v7, The Lord Is The Servant’s Only Source Of Help (41:10; 49:8). The phrase not be Disgraced (Ashamed) means to be Honored (49:7; 52:13). Like a flint indicates determination. v8, Justifies: God Would View This One As Completely Righteous. v9, The Lord God Will Help Me: See the same Voice Of Confidence In The Lord in Psalm 118:6-12.
Quest Study Bible – v4-6, “How was Isaiah physically and verbally abused? Although Jeremiah was abused (Jeremiah 36-38) and other Prophets insulted, we don’t have any record of Isaiah being mistreated. This Text Must Refer To The Servant, Who Would Be Faithful To God Despite The Abuse That Might Result. Verse 6 Describes Treatment Jesus Endured Before His Crucifixion (see Matthew 26:67, 68; 27:30, 31. v7, “Flint,” A hard rock abundant in the Middle East. Its hardness, made it useful in tool such as hammers, chisels and knives. It also became a symbol for stubborn endurance, as it is used here.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v-9, As Jesus Was God And Man In One person, We Find Him Sometimes Speaking, Or Spoken Of, As The Lord God, At Other Times, As Man And The Servant of Jehovah. He Was To Declare The Truths Which Comfort The Broken, Contrite Heart, Those Weary of Sin, Harassed With Afflictions. And As The Holy Spirit Was Upon Him, That He Might Speak As Never Man Spake; So The Same Divine Influence Daily Wakened Him To Pray, To Preach The Gospel, And To Receive And Deliver The Whole Will Of The Father. THE FATHER JUSTIFIED THE SON WHEN HE ACCEPTED THE SATISFACTION HE (CHRIST) MADE FOR THE SIN OF MAN. Christ Speaks In The Name Of All Believers. Who Dares To Be An Enemy To Those Unto Whom He Is A Friend? Or Who Will Contend (Fight) With Those For Whom He Is An Advocate? Thus St Paul Applies It , Romans 8:33) Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s Elect? It Is God That Justifieth. John Gill’s Exposition Of The Bible – v33, Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s Elect? &c.] The Elect Of God are a certain select number of persons, whom He Has So Loved, As Of His Sovereign Good Will And Pleasure, To Choose In Christ Before The Foundation Of The World, Unto Eternal Life And Salvation, by certain ways and means of His Own Appointing, As Sanctification and Faith, so that they are Peculiarly His: but are these persons chargeable with nothing criminal? yes, with Adam’s sin; with a want of Original Righteousness; with multitudes of sins before conversion, some of them with very great ones; and all, even after conversion, with frequent infirmities and backslidings: and will none rise up and exhibit charges of this nature against them? yes, even now, they very often bring charges against themselves; they are very apt to charge one another; Satan, the accuser of the brethren, lays many things to their charge very frequently, and so do the men of the world; BUT ALL THESE CHARGES AVAIL NOTHING, SINCE NONE OF THE DIVINE PERSONS, Father, Son, and Spirit, Lay Anything Against Them: Not God The Father, For It Is God That Justifieth; He Against Whom (Against Him) Sin Is Committed, Who Is The Lawgiver, And The Righteous Judge, Justifies Them From Every Charge; not by teaching them the way of Justification, nor by Infusing Righteousness into them, or on account of any Works of Righteousness done by them, but by Pronouncing Them Righteous Through The Imputation Of The Righteousness Of His Son Unto Them: Observe, That “God’s Elect”, as such, are The Objects Of Justification (Made Righteous); Which Proves The Eternity Of It; The Speciality Of It As Belonging To Particular Persons, And The Everlasting Security And Continuance Of It. Amen.
