“Be Blessed,” Yolanda Adams
“Stubborn Israel,” Isaiah 48:1) Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, Which Swear By The Lord, And Make Mention Of The God Of Israel, but not in Truth, nor in Righteousness. Jeremiah 7:9; Zephaniah 1:5. 2) For they call themselves of The Holy City, and stay themselves upon The God Of Israel; The Lord Of Hosts Is His Name. 3) I Have Declared The Former Things From The Beginning; And They Went Forth Out Of My Mouth, And I Shewed Them; I Did Them Suddenly, And They Came To Pass. 4) Because I Knew That Thou Art Obstinate, And Thy Neck Is An Iron Sinew, And Thy Brow Brass; 5) I Have Even From The Beginning Declared It To Thee; Before It Came To Pass I Shewed It Thee: Lest Thou Shouldest Say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. 6) Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare It? I Have Shewed Thee New Things From This Time, Even Hidden Things, And Thou Didst Not Know Them. 7) They Are Created Now, And Not From The Beginning; Even Before The Day When Thou Heardest Them Not (You Have Not Heard Them Before Today); Lest Thou Shouldest Say, Behold, I Knew Them. 8) Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: For I Knew That Thou Wouldest Deal Very Treacherously, And Wast Called A Transgressor From The Womb. Psalm 58:3. 9) For My Name’s Sake Will I Defer Mine Anger, And For My Praise Will I Refrain For Thee, That I Cut Thee Not Off. Joshua 7:9. 10) Behold, I Have Refined Thee, But Not With Silver; I Have Chosen Thee In The Furnace Of Affliction. 11) For Mine Own Sake, Even For Mine Own Shake, Will I Do It: For How Should My Name Be Polluted? And I Will Not Give My Glory Unto Another. Deuteronomy 32:26.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, Hear is an appeal to “deaf Israel.” v2, 3, The citizens of the Holy City, Jerusalem, professed to lean on The God Of Israel (Romans 9:6). v4, Obstinate means “hard.” Iron and bronze are metaphors (meaning something else) for rebelliousness. v5, Despite Israel’s knowledge that no idol had helped them, in the future they would attribute their salvation to some other god Than The One Lord. v6, To Declare … Hidden Things, The Lord Must Know And Control The Future. v7, 8, As God Unfolded His Plan Of Redemption, He Created Events That Israel Had Not Hear About Before. v9, Defer My Anger means to be “Longsuffering” (Exodus 34:6). v10, Refined, a reference to Judgment (1:25; 4:4), refers to the Babylonian captivity. Furnace is an illusion to Israel’s suffering in Egypt (Deuteronomy 4:20; Jeremiah 11;4). v11, For My Own Sake: The Lord Shows His Settled Will To Maintain The Integrity Of His Great Name (v. 9).
Quest Study Bible – v1, “What kind of Oaths did God’s people take?” People took oaths to affirm loyalty to someone (Nehemiah 6:18), to testify in court (Exodus 22:11) or to promise something to God or another person (Joshua 2:17-20). This Text seems to refer to Religious or interpersonal oaths that were not kept, or that were wrongly taken (such as an oath of vengeance). v6, “What New Things … Hidden Things were coming?” The “new exodus” —that is, the release from Babylon and the return to Judah. God Wanted His people To Pay Attention and not to assume they heard this before. It is also possible that these New Things are The Prophecies About The Servant-Messiah. v10, “How does affliction refine God’s people?” Metal such as silver was refined with fire. Impurities were burned off. In the same way, the seven-decade captivity in Babylon was intended to burn away the sins, such as idolatry and corruption, that had tainted Israel. Though not as silver may indicate God’s Frustration that His people had not forsaken their sins yet and thus were not like pure silver.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-8, The Jews valued themselves on descent from Jacob, and used The Name Of Jehovah as their God. They prided themselves respecting Jerusalem and The Temple, yet there was no Holiness in their lives. If We Are Not Sincere In Religion, We Do But Take The Name Of The Lord In Vain. By Prophecy They Were Shown How God Would Deal With Them, Long Before It Came To Pass, God Has Said And Done Enough To Prevent Men’s Boasting Of Themselves, Which Makes The Sin And Ruin Of The Proud Worse; Sooner Or Later Every Mouth Shall Be Stopped, And All Become Silent Before Him. We Are All Born Children Of Disobedience. Where Original Sin Is, Actual Sin Will Follow. DOES NOT THE CONSCIENCE OF EVERY MAN WITNESS TO THE TRUTH OF SCRIPTURE? May The Lord Prove Us, And Render Us Doers Of The Word. Amen. v9-13, We have nothing ourselves to plead with God, Why He Should Have Mercy Upon Us. It Is For His Praise, To The Honor Of His Mercy, To Spare Us. His Bringing Men Into Trouble Was To Do Them Good. It Was To Refine Them, But Not As Silver; Not So Thoroughly As men Refine Silver. If God Should Take That Course, They Are All Dross (Worthless), And As Such, Might Justly Be Put Away. He Takes Them (The Redeemed) As Refined In Part Only. Many Have Been Brought Home To God As Chosen Vessels, And A Good Work Of Grace Begun In Them, In The Furnace Of Affliction. It Is Comfort To God’s People, That God Will Secure His Own Honor, (And) Therefore Work Deliverance For Them. And If God Delivers His People, He Cannot Be At A Loss For Instruments To Be Employed. God Has Formed A Plan, In Which, For His Own Sake, And The Glory Of His Grace, He Saves All That Come To Him.
