Anti-type – Foreshadowed by a Type.

Types of Christ – Those Superseding Christ.  Historic.  Example:  The Passover Lamb is a Type Of Christ (Exodus 12).  ” The Goat of Atonement”  (Leviticus 16:29-34), a Type of Christ.  The Hebrews tells us that the “Types” are but the “SHADOW OF GOOD THINGS TO COME, AND NOT THE VERY IMAGE OF THE THING.” Heb. 10:1.

Christ The Anti-type –  Christ Supersedes The Types Of Christ.  He Is Prophetic, The Fulfillment and The Real Thing.  Ephesians 1:7; Romans 5:9; Hebrews 13:12….

Psalm 18 is attributed to David.  The text of this Psalm is found in 2 Samuel 22 with some variations.  The superscription (writing) indicates that this Psalm was David’s Hymn of Celebration To The Grace Of God.  This may be a Psalm of Trust.  *NCBC.

Psalm 18, Of David the servant of The Lord.  He sang to The Lord the words of this Song When The Lord Delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.  He said:

“I Will Love Thee, O Lord, My Strength,” V, Psalm 18:40) Thou Hast Also Given Me The Necks Of Mine Enemies; That I Might Destroy Them That Hate Me.  41) They cried, but there was none to save them:  Even Unto The Lord, But He Answered Them Not.  42) Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind:  I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.  43) Thou Hast Delivered Me Form The Strivings Of The People; And Thou Hast Made me the head of the heathen:  a people whom I have not known shall serve me.  44) As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me:  the strangers shall submit themselves unto me.  45) The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.  Micah 7:17.  46) The Lord Liveth; And Blessed Be My Rock; And Let The God Of My Salvation Be Exalted.  47) It Is God That Avengeth Me, And Subdueth The People Under Me.  48) He Delivereth Me From Mine Enemies:  Yea, Thou Liftest Me Up Above Those That Rise Up Against Me:  Thou Hast Delivered Me From The Violent Man.  49) Therefore Will I Give Thanks Unto Thee, O Lord, Among The Heathen, And Sing Praises Unto Thy Name.  50) Great Deliverance Giveth He To His king; And Sheweth Mercy To His Anointed, To David, and to his seed forevermore.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v37-41, pursued by enemies:  God Gives David Strength To Complete The Battle Against his Enemies.  God Himself Is A Warrior (Exodus 15:3) And He Outfits His Servants For Battle.  To The Lord:  Apparently in the extremes of battle, the enemies of David found no help from their gods, so they screamed aloud to David’s God for deliverance.  But God Would Not Answer Them.  There Is Only One Prayer From The Wicked To Which He Gladly Listens—The Prayer Of Repentance.  v42 43, Head Of The Nations is language That Prophetically Speaks Of The Reign Of The Messiah.  David gained his empire by The Work Of The Lord on his behalf.  But David’s empire was only a picture of The Kingdom Of God that will one day Be Governed By David’s Greater Son, The Lord Jesus.  v44-50, Ordinarily, Praise To The Lord Was Given In The Congregation Of The Israelites.  On occasion the poets speak of God’s Victories Among The Gentiles who still worship other gods (138:1).  This was a form of Mission Activity during The Old Testament Period (117:1).  By Proclaiming The Victories Of God To The Nations, the poets were calling to the nations to Respond In Faith.  How fitting that Paul would cite this Verse (or Its parallel in 2 Samuel 22:50) in Romans 15:19 As An Indicator Of God’s Ongoing Intention To Bring His Salvation To All People.  to His king:   David’s victories are prototypes of The Victories Of The Great King To Come.  The use of the word Anointed is appropriate for David, But It Points Forward To The Savior Who Is The Anointed One (2:2).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v29-50, When We Praise For One Mercy, We Must Observe The Many More, Which We Have Been Compassed (Covered) All Our Days.  Many Things Had Contributed To David’s Advancement, And He Own’s (To) The Hand Of God In Them All, To Teach Us To Do Likewise.  In Verse 32, And In The Following Verses, Are The Gifts Of God To The Spiritual Warrior, Whereby He (The Believer) Is Prepared For The Contest, After The Example Of His Victorious Leader (Christ).  Learn That We Must Seek Release Through Christ.  In David The Type (Of Christ), We Behold The Reconciliation Of Jesus Our Redeemer, Conflicting With Enemies, Compassed With Sorrows, And With Ungodly Men, Enduring Not Only The Pains Of Death, But The Wrath Of God For Us; Yet Calling Upon The Father With Strong Cries And Tears; Rescued From The Grave; Proceeding To Reconcile, Or To Put Under His Feet All Other Enemies, Till Death, The Last Enemy, Shall Be Destroyed.  We Should Love The Lord Our Strength, And Our Salvation; We Should Call On Him In Every Trouble, And Praise Him For Every Deliverance; We Should Aim To Walk With Him In All Righteousness And True Holiness, Keeping From Sin.  If We Belong To Him, He Conquers And Reigns For Us, And We Shall Conquer And Reign Through Him, And Partake Of The Mercy Of Our Anointed King, Which Is Promised To All His Seed Forevermore!  Amen.
