Mountains – The Symbols of Oppression
“The Helper of Israel,” cont’d, Isaiah 41:10) Fear thou not; For I Am With thee: Be Not Dismayed; For I Am thy God: I Will Strengthen thee; Yea, I Will Help thee; Yea, I Will Uphold thee With The Right Hand Of My Righteousness. 11) Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. 12) Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. 13) For I The Lord Thy God Will Hold thy right hand, Saying Unto thee, Fear Not; I Will Help thee. 14) Fear Not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I Will Help thee, Saith The Lord, and thy Redeemer, The Holy One Of Israel. 15) Behold, I Will Make thee a New Sharp Threshing Instrument Having Teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. Micah 4:13; 2 Chronicles 10:4, 5. 16) Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt Rejoice In The Lord, And Shalt Glory In The Holy One Of Israel. Jeremiah 51:2. 17) When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I The Lord Will Hear them, I The God Of Israel Will Not Forsake them. 18) I Will Open Rivers In High places, And Fountains In The Midst Of The Valley: I Will make The Wilderness A Pool Of Water, And The Dry land Springs Of Water. 19) I Will Plant In The Wilderness The Cedar, The Shittah Tree, And The Myrtle, And The Oil Tree; I Will Set In The Desert The Fir Tree, And The Pine, And The Box Tree Together: 20) That they may See, and Know, and Consider, and Understand together, That The Hand Of The Lord Hath Done This, And The Holy One Of Israel Hath Created It. Job 12:9.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, The Lord’s Command To The Israelites To Fear Not contrasts with fright of pagans in vv. 5, 6. v11, 12 The People Of God are given Renewed Assurance that their formidable enemies will be brought to nothing (40:17, 23). v13, The Lord Will Hold The Exile’s Right Hand (42:6) Just As He Held The Hand Of Moses (63:12). The Lord Is With Them, They Have Nothing To Fear. v14, Redeemer refers to the family protector who would avenge murders (Numbers 35:19) and redeem indentured (binding contract) slaves (Leviticus 25:47-49). When The Lord Is Called The Redeemer, The Title Highlights His Zeal To Purchase Back His People (49:26). v15, The lowly “worm” (v. 14) would be transformed into a threshing sledge (28:27) that removes mountains, the symbols of opposition. v16, winnow Threshed grain is tossed in the air to separate the chaff from the grain. v17, The poor and needy refers to the exiles moving homeward across the desert. thirst: God Will Meet The People’s Most Basic Needs. v18, rivers … fountains … pool of water … springs of water: The returning exiles would need water, But God’s Provision Would Be Bountiful. v19, In the wilderness … tree: The abundant water supply would also lead To The Lord’s Massive Plantings Of Trees And Vegetation (35:1, 2). v20, The Hand: God’s Hand Indicates His Power And Strength (40:10; 41:10).
Quest Study Bible – v14, “Why Does God Call His People A Worm?” It’s obvious from the context that God Was Not Scolding His People. They already must have been considering themselves as insignificant as worms. He Was Comforting Them And Offering New Hope. They may have been little and insignificant compared to the great nations battling for power, But God Would Still Use Israel In Mighty Ways. v15, “Threshing sledge,” After grain was harvested, it was usually dried and taken to a threshing floor to be crushed in order to separate the stalks and husks from the edible kernels. This was often done with large sleds, drawn by animals. Not only would the weight of the sledges crush the grain, but some sledges were fitted with sharp teeth to rip the grain apart. This is an image of great power. Little Israel would become a huge sledge, threshing the mountains, the surrounding nations. v18, “When Did God Turn The Desert Into Pools Of Water?” We must look at These Prophecies in three ways: Spiritual, historical and future-kingdom. Spiritually, God Turns A Dry Heart Into A Spring Of Water Welling Up To Eternal Life (John 4:14). Historically, we might find some fulfillment in Israel’s Return to Its land after the Babylonian captivity (or in the twentieth century). But God Regularly Uses This Image To Describe His Future Kingdom, In Which The Earth Itself Will Be Transformed (see 35:6-7).
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v10-20, God Speaks With Tenderness; Fear Thou Not, For I Am With Thee: Not Only Within Hearing, But Present With Thee. Art Thou Weak? I Will Strengthen Thee: Art Thou In Want Of Friends? I Will Help Thee In The Time Of Need. Art Thou Ready To Fall? I Will Uphold Thee With That Right Hand Which Is Full Of Righteousness, Dealing Forth Rewards And Punishments. There are those that strive with God’s People, that seek their ruin. Let Not God’s People Render Evil For Evil, But Wait God Time. It is the worm Jacob; so little, so weak, so despised and trampled on by everyone. God’s People Are Like Worms, In Their Own Humble Thoughts, And In Their Enemies Haughty Thoughts Of Them; Worms, But Not Vipers, Not Of The Serpent’s Seed. Every Par Of God’s Word Is Calculated To Humble Man’s Pride, and to make him appear little in his own eyes. The Lord Will Help Them, For He Is Their REDEEMER. The Lord Will Make Jacob To Become A Threshing Instrument. God Will Make Him Fit For Use, New, And Having Sharp Spikes. This Has Fulfillment In The Triumphs Of The Gospel Of Christ, And of All Faithful Followers Of Christ, Over The Power Of Darkness. God Has Provided Comforts To Supply All Their Wants, And To Answer All Their Prayers. Our Way To Heaven Lies Through The Wilderness Of This World. The Soul Of Man Is In Want, And Seeks For Satisfaction; But Becomes Weary Of Seeking That In The World, Which Is Not To Be Had (In It). Yet They Shall Have A Constant Supply, Where One Would Least Expect it. I Will Open Rivers Of Grace, Rivers Of Living Water, Which Christ Spake Of The Spirit, John 7:38-39. When God Sets Up His Church In The Gentile Wilderness, There Shall Be A Great Change, As If Thorns And Briers Were Tuned Into Cedars, And Fir-Trees, For The Poor In Spirit, Who Long For Divine Enlightening, Pardon, And Holiness. AND GOD WILL RENDER THEIR BARREN SOULS FRUITFUL IN THE GRACE OF HIS SPIRIT, That All Who Behold May Consider It.
