“Love Lifted Me”

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – Chapter 40, This Chapter Begins The Latter Part Of The Prophecy Of This Book.  All The Mercies Of God To The Jewish Nation Bore Some Resemblance Of Those Glorious Things Performed By Our Savior For Man’s Redemption.  So While The Prophet Is Speaking Of The Redemption Of The Jews He Had In His Thoughts A More Glorious Deliverance.  We Need Not Look For Any Further Accomplishment Of These Prophecies.  For If Jesus Is He, And His Kingdom Is It, We Are To Look For No Other But The Carrying On And Completing Of The Same Blessed Work That Was Begun In The First Preaching And Planting Of Christianity In The World.

“Comfort For God’s People,” lll, Isaiah 40:18) To whom then will ye liken God?  or what likeness will ye compare unto Him?  Acts 17:29.  19) The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains.  20) He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation (sacrifice or offering) chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.  21) Have ye not Known?  have ye not Heard?  hath It not been Told you from the beginning?  have ye not Understood from the foundations of the earth?  22) It Is He That Sitteth Upon The Circle Of The Earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; That Stretcheth Out the Heavens as a curtain, and Spreadeth Them out as a tent to dwell in:  23) That Bringeth the princes to nothing; He Maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.  Job 12:21.  24) Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown:  yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth:  And He Shall Also Blow Upon them, and they shall wither, and the Whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.  25) To whom then will ye Liken Me, or Shall I Be Equal?  SAITH THE HOLY ONE.  Acts 17:24-29.  26) Lift up your eyes On High, And Behold Who Hath Created Theses Things, That Bringeth Out Their Host By Number:  He Calleth Them All By Names By The Greatness Of His Might, For That He Is Strong In Power; Not One Faileth.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary –  v18, Liken God:  The God Of Scripture Is Incomparable; There Is No One Else Like Him (40:25; 46:5; Psalm 113:4-6).  v19, goldsmith:  Many idols were made with wood, then overlaid with gold (41:6, 7; 44:9-20; 46:6, 7).  Silver chains  kept the idol from moving or falling.  v20, too impoverished:  The poor had to choose the best wood available and then hope it was good enough.  What is the value of the prayer of a poor man to a plain idol?  What is the value of the prayer of the rich to one covered with gold?  To both questions, the answer is “none.”  v21, 22:  Have You Not Known:  The Questions Express God’s Incredulity at worshipers of idols.  Stretches Out The Heavens:   Creation Is The Work Of The God Of Israel.  v23, 24, nothing … useless:   For a similar expression of the insignificance of entire nations Before The Might Of The Living God, see v. 17.  planted … blow … wither:  This Imagery Describing God’s Judgment Is Similar To That In vv. 6-8.  v25, To Whom Then Will You Liken Me:   This Part Of An Important Biblical Theme, The Incomparability of God.  v26, Lift Up:  Human Beings Are Responsible To Discern The Greatness Of The Creator In His Creation.  These things refers to the Heavenly bodies.  by number:  Each of the stars is Known To The Creator; to each He Has Given A Name (Psalm 147:4).

Quest Study Bible – v22, “Circle of the earth,”  The horizon.  This is the only time this phrase appears in The Bible.  v23, “Does God Manipulate Political Events?”  Yes.  God Can Manipulate Political Events And Sometimes Does So In A Dramatic Fashion.  But humans are not mere puppets on a string.  They Still Have The Responsibility To Respond To What God Does And Says.  Also see “Is God Responsible For Bad Government?”  (Daniel 5:18) and article:  “Does God Support Bad Government?”  (Romans 13:1-7).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v18-26, Whatever We Esteem Or Love, Fear Or Hope In, More Than God, That Creature(,) We Make Equal With God.  (And) He That Is So Poor, That He Has Scarcely A Sacrifice To Offer (To The Living God), Yet Will Not Be Without A god (an idol) Of His Own.  (And Many) Spared No Cost Upon Their Idols; (But) We Grudge What Is Spent In The Service Of Our God.  To Prove The Greatness Of God, The Prophet Appeals To All Ages And Nations.  Those That Are Ignorant Of This, Are Willingly Ignorant.  God Has The Command Of All Creatures, And Of All Created Things.  The Prophet Directs Us To Use Our Reason As Well As Our Senses; To Consider Who Created The Hosts Of Heaven, And To Pay Our Homage To Him. ( And Let Us Not Forget He Will Fulfill All His Promises).  Amen.
