“Glory To The Lamb,” Geoffrey Golden
“Woe To Those Who Rely On Egypt,” Isaiah 31:1) Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they Look Not Unto The Holy One Of Israel, Neither Seek The Lord. Ezekiel 17:15. 2) Yet He Also Is Wise, And Will Bring Evil, And Will Not Call Back His Words: But Will Arise Against The House Of The Evildoers, And Against The Help Of Them That Work Iniquity. 3) Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not Spirit. When The Lord Shall Stretch Out His Hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen (helped) shall fall down, and they all shall fall together. Psalm 9:20; Ezekiel 28:9. 4) For Thus Hath The Lord Spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: So Shall The Lord Of Hosts Come Down To Fight For Mount Zion, And For The Hill Thereof. 5) As birds flying, So Will The Lord Of Hosts Defend Jerusalem; Defending Also He Will Deliver It; And passing Over He Will Preserve It. Deuteronomy 32:11; Psalm 91:4.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, Look means “to look with interest” or “to look with respect.” Seek The Lord entails Consulting His Prophets For Direction (29:9, 10; 30:1). v2, 3, The house of evildoers refers to Judah. Their help refers to Egypt. Both Egypt and Judah will perish together. v4, 5, Lion connotes (implies) The Lord Of Hosts And His Resolve To Fight The Enemy. The multitude of shepherds refers to the Assyrian officers.
Quest Study Bible – v1, “What was wrong with recruiting Egyptian support?” See “What was wrong with asking for Egyptian support?” (30:1-2). v1, “Why Did God Not Want Israel To Have A Strong National Defense?” God Wanted The People To Trust Him And Seek His Help. If their defenses were weak, Then There Would Be No Doubt That Their Help Came From God Alone.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-5, God Will Oppose The help Sought From Workers Of Iniquity. Sinners may be convicted of folly by plain and self-evident Truths, which they cannot deny, but will not Believe. There Is No Escaping The Judgments Of God; and evil pursues sinners. The Lord Of Hosts Will Come Down To Fight For Mount Zion. The Lord of the tribe of Judah Will Appear For The Defense Of His Church. And as birds hovering over their young ones to protect them, With Such Compassion And Affection Will The Lord Of Hosts Defend Jerusalem. He Will So Defend It, As To Secure Its Safety.
