Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, This is the fourth Woe in 28:1-35:10. The rebellious children are Hezekiah’s advisers. To the sin of injustice they add the sin of devising plans Independently Of God. v2, the shadow of Egypt: The contrast, of course, would Be Trusting In The “Shadow Of The Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). v3, Shame refers to deep humiliation. v4, His ambassadors may be the people from Judah who went from Zoan (19:11-13) in the Delta to Hanes, some fifty miles south of Cairo. v5, Shame and reproach speak of an intolerable humiliation. v6, The burden against the beasts was because of the fact that they vainly carried Judah’s gifts through the wilderness to Egypt (vv. 7-11). v7, Rahab, which means “Storm’ or “Arrogant,” was a dragon from pagan mythology that was pictured as resisting creation.
Quest Study Bible – v1-2, “What was wrong with asking for Egyptian support?” The problem was that the Jewish leaders Hadn’t Consulted God. God Alone Was To Be Their Source Of Security, but the people wanted a backup plan—just in case something went wrong or God didn’t come through. So to hedge their bets with God, They made a treaty with Egypt (2 Kings 18:21). v7, “Rahab,” Mythical sea monster that ruled over chaos that existed at the time of Creation; also a nickname for Egypt (Psalm 87:4). Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, It was often the fault and folly of the Jews, that when troubled by the neighbors on one side, they sought for succor from others, Instead Of Looking Up To God. Nor can we avoid the dreadful consequences of adding sin to sin, But By Making The Righteousness Of Christ Our Refuge, And Seeking For The Sanctification Of The Holy Spirit. Men have always been prone to lean to their own understandings, but this will end in their shame and misery. They would not Trust In God. They took much pains to gain the Egyptians. The riches so spent turned to a bad account. See What Dangers Men Run Into Who Forsake God To Follow Their Carnal Confidences. The Creator Is The Rock Of Ages, And The Creature A Broken Reed; we cannot expect too little from man, or Too Much From God. Out Strength Is To Sit Still, In Humble Dependence Upon God And His Goodness, And Quiet Submission To His Will.
