Moral Precept – General Rule, A Fundamental Truth
“Woe To Ephraim,” V, Isaiah 28:23) Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech. 24) Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doeth he open and break the clods of his ground? 25) When he hath made plain the face thereof (leveled the surface), doth he not cast abroad the fitches (caraway), and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie (spelt, wheat) in their place? 26) For his God Doth Instruct him to discretion, and Doth Teach him. 27) For the fitches (caraway) are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod. 28) Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen. 29) This Also Cometh Forth From The Lord Of Hosts, Which Is Wonderful In Counsel, And Excellent In Working. Romans 11:33.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v23-29, The Wisdom that the farmer uses in vv. 23-28 to tend the crops come from God, The Source Of All Good Counsel.
Quest Study Bible – v24-29, “Why all these references to agriculture?” Threshing was a well-known symbol of Judgment. Perhaps the point is that God Will Not Thresh, Or Punish, Israel Forever. Or, it could mean that just as God Has Provided a Strategy and Instructions For The Farmer To produce a Great Harvest (v. 28), He Also Has A Strategy And Instructions For The Nation To Produce Righteousness.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – 23-29, The husbandman applies to his calling with pains and prudence, in all the works of it according to their nature. Thus The Lord, Who Has Given Men This Wisdom, In Wonderful In Counsel, And Excellent In His Working. As The Occasion Requires, He Threatens, Corrects, Spares, Shows Mercy, Or Executes Vengeance. Afflictions Are God’s Threshing Instruments, To Loosen Us From The World, to part between us and our chaff, and to prepare us for use. God Will Proportion Them To Our Strength; They Shall Be No Heavier Than There Is Need. When His End Is Answered, The Trials And Sufferings Of His People Shall Cease; His Wheat Shall Be Gathered Into The Garner (Storehouse), But The Chaff Shall Be Burned With Unquenchable Fire.
