“Deliverance of Israel,” lll, Isaiah 27:11) When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: Therefore He That Made them Will Not Have Mercy On them, And He That Formed them Will Shew them No Favour. Deuteronomy 32:28; 2 Thessalonians 1:8. 12) And it shall come to pass In That Day, That The Lord Shall Beat Off From The Channel Of The River Unto The Stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel. 13) And it shall come to pass In That Day, That The Great Trumpet Shall Be Blown , and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, And Shall Worship The Lord In The Holy Mount At Jerusalem.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v10, 11, the fortified city will be desolate: For a similar idea see 25:2; 10-12; 26:5, 6. v12, Thresh refers to harvesting a crop by flailing, such as beating an olive tree. the River to the brook of Egypt: These geographical references mark out Israel’s Ideal Homeland. v13, The Great Trumpet is a figure of speech for assembling troops (Exodus 19:16, 19; 1 Samuel 13:3; 2 Samuel 16:5; Matthew 24:31; 1 Corinthians 15:52; 1 Thessalonians 4:16).
Quest Study Bible – v10-11, “Why Didn’t God Show Compassion For Those Who Couldn’t Understand?” Its not that the people couldn’t understand—they wouldn’t. They were seeking direction from idols instead of The One, True God. Their lack of Discernment was self-inflicted and deserved Judgment Rather Than Compassion. v12, “Why thresh from the Euphrates River to Egypt?” This was a Promise of A Coming Harvest: though they would be scattered from Egypt to Babylon, God’s People would again be gathered back to The Promised Land. Because threshing was often used as an image of punishment, some suggest this also contains the idea of Judgment upon the nations that carried Israel away. Others see an illusion to a coming golden age: from the Euphrates to Egypt represented the boundaries of Israel at its peak (1 Kings 4:21).
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v11-13, Jerusalem had been Defended By Grace and The Divine Protection, but When God Withdrew, she was left like a wilderness. This has awfully come to pass. And this is the figure of the deplorable state of The Vineyard, The Church, when It brought forth wild grapes. Sinners flatter themselves they shall not be dealt with severely, because God Is Merciful, and is their Maker. We see how weak those pleas will be. Verses 12-13 seem to Predict The Restoration of The Jews after the Babylonia Captivity, and their recovery from their present dispersion. This is further applicable to the Preaching Of The Gospel, by which sinners are gathered into The Grace Of God; The Gospel Proclaims The Acceptable Year Of The Lord. Those gathered by the sounding of The Gospel Trumpet, are brought in to Worship God, and added To The Church, and The Last Trumpet Will Gather The Saints Together. Amen.
