“A Song of Praise,” lll, Isaiah 26:12) Lord, Thou Wilt Ordain Peace For Us:  For Thou Also Hast Wrought All Our Works In Us.  13) O Lord Our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us:  But By Thee Only Will We Make Mention Of Thy Name.  Psalm 66:12.  14) They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise:  Therefore Hast Thou Visited And Destroyed Them, and made all their memory perish.  15) Thou Hast Increased The nation, O Lord, Thou Hast Increased The Nation:  Thou Art Glorified:  Thou Hadst Removed It Far Unt0 All The Ends Of The Earth.  16) Lord, in trouble have they Visited Thee, they poured out a Prayer when Thy Chastening Was Upon Them.  2 Chronicles 33:12; Hosea 5:15.  17) Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in Thy Sight, O Lord.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v12, True Peace Comes Only From The Lord (26:3; John 14:27).  v13, Other masters included rulers of Egypt in the past, rulers of Assyria in the present, and rulers of Babylon in the future.  v14, They are dead:  The Prophet saw the future demise of the enemies of God’s People.  v15, You Have Increased The Nation:  The repetition of this expression emphasizes both its certainty and its magnitude.  v16, The pronoun they refers to the Faithful Nation.  v17, 18, a woman with child:  A woman can endure labor pains for the sake of the joy that follows.  The Faithful Remnant of Isaiah’s time endured oppression, but brought forth wind, a metaphor for meaningless labor.

Quest Study Bible – v13, “What other lords had Israel served?”  Isaiah was not talking here about other gods.  He was talking about foreign rulers, dead and forgotten, Unlike The Lord Who Remained Very Much Alive.  These invaders came from nations such as Egypt, Assyria and Babylon.  Each took a turn ruling the land.  But The Hearts of Righteous Hebrews Remained Loyal To God.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v12-19, Every creature, every business, any way serviceable to our comfort, God Makes To Be So; He Makes That Work For Us Which Seemed To Be Against us.  They had been slaves of sin and Satan; But By The Divine Grace They Were Taught To Look To Be Set Free From All Former Masters.  The Cause Opposed To God And His Kingdom Will Sink At Last.  See our need of afflictions.  Before, Prayer Came Drop by Drop; Now They Pour It Out, It comes now like water from a fountain.  Afflictions bring us to Secret Prayer.  Consider Christ As The Speaker Addressing His Church.  His Resurrection From The Dead Was The Deliverance Foretold.  The Power Of His Grace, Like The Dew Or Rain, Which Causes the herbs that seem dead to Revive, Would Raise His His Church From The Lowest State.  But We May Refer To The Resurrection Of The Dead, Especially Of Those United To Christ.  Amen.
