“A Prophecy About Jerusalem,” lV, Isaiah 22:18) He Will Surely Violently Turn And Toss (Throw) Thee Like A Ball Into A Large Country:  There Shalt Thou Die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord’s (master’s) house.  19) And I Will Drive Thee From Thy Station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down (you will be ousted from your position).  20) And it shall come to pass in That Day, That I Will Call My Servant Eliakim The Son Of Hilkiah:  2 Kings 18:18.  21) And I Will Clothe Him With Thy Robe, And Strengthen Him With Thy Girdle, And I Will Commit Thy Government Into His Hand:  And He Shall Be A Father To The Inhabitants Of Jerusalem, And To The House Of Judah.  22) And The Key Of The House Of David Will I Lay Upon His Shoulder; So He Shall Open, And None Shall Shut; And He Shall Shut, And None Shall Open.

Quest Study Bible – v22,   SCRIPTURE LINK (22:22) “What He Opens No One Can Shut,” Jesus used similar words to illustrate Authority Given By God.  See Matthew 16:19; Revelation 3:7.

Quest Study Bible – “How Could God Be So Unforgiving?” v19, Because the nation of Judah was so unrepentant.  If God Had Forgiven This Unrepentant People, it would have been the same as if He Had Approved Of Their Sin.  As it was, God Had Shown Incredible Patience Toward Them, even though they had repeatedly Broken Their Covenant With Him.  Through The Prophets God Tried Again and Again To Restore The Relationship The People Had Severed.  But the people rejected His Prophets And His Message.  Even the annihilation of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (722 B. C.) failed to convince the masses of the Southern Kingdom to Repent.  God May Have Appeared Unforgiving.  In reality, Isaiah was only declaring what the people had already decided:  They Would Not Repent; They Would Not Change Their Sinful Way Of Life; And They Would Not Seek God.  They result?  They Would Remain Unforgiven And Pay The Price For Their Own Sinful Choices.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v18, 19, drive you out:  Shebnar was demoted to a secretary by the time of the Assyrian siege (36:3, 22).  v20, Eliakim:  Was an official whom God Would Honor in place of the arrogant Shebnar (v. 15).  v21, The word father suggests the self-sacrificing love of Eliakim for citizens of Jerusalem.  v22, The steward had the key that gave him an audience with the king.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v15-25, This message to Shebna is a reproof of his pride, vanity, and security; what vanity is (is) all earthly grandeur, which death will so soon end!!  What will it avail, whether we are laid in a magnificent tomb, or covered with the green sod?  Those who, when in power, turn and toss (throw) others, will be justly turned and tossed (thrown) themselves.  Eliakim should be put into Shebna’s place.  Those called to places of Trust and Power, Should Seek To God For Grace To Enable Them To Do Their Duty.  Eliakim’s advancement is described.  Our Lord Jesus Describes His Own Power As Mediator, Revelation 3:7, That He Has The key Of David.  His Power In The Kingdom Of Heaven, And In Ordering All The Affairs Of That Kingdom, Is Absolute.  Rulers should be fathers to those under their government; and the honor men bring unto their families, by their Piety and Usefulness, is more to be valued than what they derive from them by their names and titles.  The glory of this world gives a man no real worth or excellence; it is but hung upon him, and it will soon drop from him.  Eliakim was compared to a nail (or peg)  in a sure place.  That Soul Cannot Perish, Nor That Concern Fall To The Ground, Which Is By Faith Hung Upon Christ.  He Will Set Before The Believer An Open Door, Which No Man Can Shut, And Bring Both Body And Soul To Eternal Glory.  But those who Neglect So Great Salvation will find that when He Shutteth None Can Open, Whether It Be Shutting Out From Heaven, Or Shutting Up In Hell For Ever.
