“A Prophecy About Jerusalem,” cont’d, Isaiah 22:6) And Elam bare the quiver with chariots of men and horsemen, and Kir uncovered the shield.  Jeremiah 49:35;  7) And it shall come to pass that thy choicest valley shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.  8) And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest.  l Kings 7:2.  9) Ye have seen also the breaches of the City of David, that they are many:  and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.  10) And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall.  11) Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool:  but ye Have Not Looked Unto The Maker Thereof, Neither Had Respect Unto Him That Fashioned It Long Ago.  Nehemiah 3:16.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v6, 7, Kir is Elam.  The Elamites may have been part of the Assyrian army (5:26).  gate:  The same army that plundered Babylon (21:2) will arrive at Jerusalem’s gates.  v8, The House of the Forest is the nation’s armory (39:2).  v9-11, The defense of the city depended on the availability of the water within its walls.  Hezekiah addressed this need by digging a tunnel beneath the city, connecting the lower pool in Jerusalem’s southwestern valley with the old pool, the source of water in the eastern valley.

Quest Study Bible – v8-11, “Palace of the Forest,”  Solomon’s palace, built of cedars shipped from the forests of Lebanon (1 Kings 7:2).  Part of this palace served as an armory (39:2).  Isaiah lists the palace with its weapons, their ingeniously engineered water supply (v. 9) and their reinforced walls (v. 10) as evidence that they were trusting in themselves rather than in God.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-7, Why is Jerusalem in such terror?  Her slain men are not slain with the sword, but with famine; or, slain with fear, disheartened.  Their rulers fled, but were overtaken.  The servants of God, who foresee and warn sinners of coming miseries, are affected by the prospect.  But all the horrors of a city taken by storm, (have a shadow of the terrors coming on The Day Of Wrath).

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-14, The weakness of Judah now appeared more than ever.  Now(,) also they discovered their carnal confidence and their carnal security.  They looked to the fortifications. They made sure of water for the city.  But they were Regardless Of God (determined to carry on without His Help) in all these preparations.  They Did Not Care For His Glory In What They Did.  They did not Depend Upon Him For A Blessing On Their Endeavors.  For Every Creature Is To Us What God Makes It To Be; And We Must Bless Him For It, And Use It For Him.  There Was Great Contempt Of God’s Wrath And Justice, In Contending (Struggling) With Them.  God’s Design Was To Humble Them, And Bring Them To Repentance.  They walked contrary to this.  Actual Disbelief Of Another Life After This, Is At The Bottom Of The Carnal Security And Brutish Sensuality Which Are The Sin, The Shame, And Ruin Of So Great A Part Of Mankind.  God Was Displeased At This.  It is a sin against The Remedy (Repentance Unto Salvation, 2 Corinthians 7:10), and it is not likely they should ever Repent of it.  Whether this unbelief works by presumption or despair, It Produces The Same Contempt (Dislike and Disrespect) Of God.
