“A Prophecy Against Babylon,” cont’d, Isaiah 21:6) For Thus Hath The Lord Said Unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth.  7) And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with much heed:  8) And he cried, A lion:  My lord, I stand continually upon the watchtower in the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:  9) And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen.  And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, and all the graven images of her gods He Hath Broken Into The Ground.  Jeremiah 50:2; Revelation 14:8.  10) O My Threshing, And The Corn Of My Floor (or, O My People, Crushed On The Threshing Floor); That Which I Have Heard Of The Lord Of Hosts, The God Of Israel, have I declared unto you.

Quest Study Bible – “What can we learn from ancient Prophecies?”  v1, Prophecy teaches us lessons, much as history does.  When we see the parallels between our times and the Israelites’, we can benefit from the things they learned.  For instance, Prophecy offers a glimpse of how seriously God Takes Sin.  A Holy God Cannot Leave Sin Unpunished Indefinitely.  Sinners must either be Forgiven or face a Day of Judgment.  Prophecy also reveals the image of specific sins.  Israel, for example, desiring to be self-sufficient, Often Was Reluctant To Trust In God.  If their crops didn’t grow or their wives didn’t conceive, they would turn to fertility gods for solutions.  If neighboring armies strapped on body armor, the Israelites would make treaties with pagan allies instead of Trusting In God (Leviticus 26:7-8; Isaiah 31:1).  Prophecies sometimes show us examples of God’s Patience and Mercy.  He Often Used Prophecy To Call Israel Back To Him–His Last Attempt To Avoid Punishing Them For Their Failure To Follow Him.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v6, Lord here means “Master.”  The watchman is probably Isaiah.  v7, A chariot of donkeys (asses) probably means “donkey riders” and a chariot of camels probably means “camel riders.”  The Persian army used donkeys and camels.  v8, 9, In the daytime … every night suggests “continually” — a display of Isaiah’s Faithfulness To His Calling.   v10, My threshing (violently beat) is a metaphor (comparison) for the punishment coming to Judah.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-10, Babylon was a flat country, abundantly watered.  The destruction of Babylon, so often Prophesied of by Isaiah, was typical of the destruction of the great foe of the New Testament Church, foretold in The Revelation.  To the poor oppressed captives it would be grievous.  Let this check vain mirth and sensual pleasures, that we know not in what heaviness the mirth may end.  Here is the alarm given to Babylon, when forced by Cyrus.  An ass and a camel seem to be the symbols of the Medes and Persians.  Babylon’s idols shall be so far from protecting her, that they shall be broken down.  True Believers Are The Corn Of God’s Floor; hypocrites are but as chaff and straw with which the wheat is now mixed, but from which it shall be separated.  The Corn Of God’s Floor Must Expect To Be Threshed By Afflictions and Persecutions.  God’s Israel of old was afflicted.  Even then God Owns it is His Still.  In All Events Concerning The Church, Past, Present, And To Come, We Must Look To God, Who Has Power To Do Any Thing For His Church, And Grace To Do Every Thing That Is For Her Good.
