“Assyria, The Lord’s Instrument,” Isaiah 8:1) Moreover The Lord Said Unto me, Take Thee A Great Roll, And Write In It With A Man’s Pen Concerning Mahershalalhashbaz. 2) And I took unto me Faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah. 2 Kings 16:10. 3) And I went unto the Prophetess (his wife); and she conceived, and bare a son. Then Said The Lord to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz. 4) For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria. 5) The Lord Spake Also Unto Me Again, Saying, 6) Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliath’s son; 7) Now therefore, Behold, The Lord Bringeth Up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, Large Scroll: This Message From The Lord was intended to be read and pondered by many people. v2, Just as the wicked Ahaz was forced to be a party to The Sign about The Birth Of Immanuel (see 7:10-17), Urriah, an apostate (a person who renounces a religion) priest and Zechariah, presumably a false prophet (not the Zechariah that wrote The Book of Zechariah), were witness to this Prophecy. v3, Isaiah’s wife was a Prophetess in her own right. v4, spoil of Samaria … king of Assyria: This is a specific Prediction of the fall of Samaria to the Assyrians in 722 B. C. This Prophecy has to have been written shortly before that time, as the fulfillment would come before the new child would be able to speak. v5, The Lord Also Spoke To Me Again: This phrase introduces a new Prophetic section and reminds the reader of The Source of The Prophetic Images In The Book Of Isaiah. v6, The gentle waters of Shiloah picture The Sustaining Presence Of The Lord. Shiloah may have been a little stream that flowed through an aqueduct to the Pool of Siloam. rejoice: The Judeans looked for the salvation that a mere king could offer instead of appealing to The King of Kings for protection. v7, 8, The River refers to the Euphrates. neck: Assyria would devastate Judah, but not completely annihilate it (ch. 37). wings: In the middle of verse 8 the image of Assyria changes to the image of a bird of prey. Isaiah bestows the name of The Promised Child, Immanuel (7:14), on Judah, because it would be preserved only Because God Was With That Nation (see v. 10).
Quest Study Bible – v3, “Why give a name like this to a child?” To the Israelites names like this were often connected with special characteristics or events and sometimes were even Prophetic. In this case, God intended the child’s name to signal the coming Assyrian conquest of Israel (see NIV text note, v. 1). Although we may think the name unusual, it marked a turning point in Israel’s history, giving the child special significance. Actually this name suggested warrior-like qualities of strength and daring, far more desirable than some other Biblical names. See, for example, “Wouldn’t a name that means not loved harm a child’s self-esteem?” (Hosea 1:6). Shiloah, v6, This slow stream flowed from the stream of Gihon along The Southwest Wall of Jerusalem. It was sharply contrasted to mighty floodwaters of the River (v. 7), referring to the Euphrates, which flowed through the Assyrian capital. The Shiloah represented The Peace Of The Lord; the floodwaters represented the surging armies of Assyria. The River, v7, The Euphrates (see Map 7 at the back of This Bible). The river symbolizes the coming Assyrian destruction. See previous note. “Why does God seem to side with Israel’s enemies?” v7-8, He Had Given Israel and Judah Their Chance, but they refused to put their trust in Him. To punish His people, God Permitted Assyria To Ravage Israel.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-8, The Prophet is to write on a Large Scroll, or on a metal tablet, Words, Which Meant, “Make speed to spoil, hasten to the prey”: pointing out that the Assyrian army should come with speed, and make great spoil. Very soon the riches of Damascus and of Samaria, cities then secure and formidable, shall be taken away by the king of Assyria. The Promised Messiah, Who Should Appear In That Land In The Fullness Of Time, And, Therefore, As God, Would Preserve It In The Mean Time. As a gentle brook is an apt emblem of a mild government, so an overflowing torrent represents a conqueror and tyrant. The invader’s success was also described by a bird of prey stretching it’s wings over the whole land. Those who Reject Christ, will find that what they call liberty is the bassest (lowest) slavery. But no enemy shall pluck The Believer Out Of Emmanuel’s (Immanuel’s) Hand, or deprive him of His Heavenly Inheritance.
