“The Sign Of Immanuel,” Isaiah 7:1) And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.  2 Kings 16:5.  2) And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim.  And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.  3) Then said The Lord Unto Isaiah, Go Forth Now To meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field;

Quest Study Bible – “What war was this?” v1, This was called the Syro-Ephraimite war and was fought during king Ahaz’s reign in Judah in 734 – 733 B. C.  Many nations in the region, including Israel (The Northern Kingdom), were controlled by Assyria.  In order to throw off Assyria’s yoke, Israel and Aram formed an alliance.  They then attempted to force Judah (The Southern Kingdom also lived in the shadow of the Assyrian threat) to join their conspiracy.  Their coercion resulted in war.  “Why did God Want Isaiah’s Son to go with Isaiah?”  v3, The name of Isaiah’s son was a message from God to Ahaz (Shear-Jashub means a Remnant Will Return).  Some think that God Wanted To Assure Ahaz that the armies of Israel and Aram would be defeated and reduced to a Remnant (2 Kings 15:29).  Others think God Wanted To Warn Ahaz that if he allied with Israel and Aram, only a Remnant of Judah would survive the bloodletting.  Still others believe that Shear-Jashub’s name offered Hope concerning a future beyond the present disaster.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, The Book of Isaiah was written over the period of the Prophet’s lifetime; but chapters 7–12 were set in the context of the Syro–Ephraimite wars.  v2, The phrase house of David is the king of Judah, Ahaz.  The word Ephraim represents The Northern Kingdom, Israel.  The heart of the nation was moved because Syria had defeated Ahaz earlier (2 Chronicles 28:5).  v3, Shear-Jashub means “A Remnant Will Return.”  The name of Isaiah’s son spoke of a coming exile and then The Salvation of the remaining Faithful.  Ahaz was probably standing at the aqueduct at the time of this encounter.

 Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-9, Ungodly men are often punished by others as bad as themselves.  Being in great distress and confusion, the Jews gave up all for lost.  They had made God their enemy, and knew not how to make Him Their Friend.  The Prophet must teach them to despise their enemies, In Faith and Dependence On God.  Ahaz, in fear, called them two powerful princes.  No, says the Prophet, they are but tails of smoking firebrands (those passionate for a cause), burnt out already.  The two kingdoms of Syria and Israel were nearly expiring.  While God Has Work for the firebrands of the earth, they consume all before them; but when their work is fulfilled, they will be extinguished in smoke.  That which Ahaz thought most formidable, is made the ground of their (the enemies) defeat; because they have taken evil counsel against thee:  Which Is An Offence To God.  God Scorns the scorners, and Gives His Word that the attempt should not succeed.  Man purposes, but God Disposes.  It was folly for those to be trying to ruin their neighbors, who were themselves near to ruin.  Isaiah must urge the Jews to rely On The Assurance Given Them.  Faith Is Absolutely Necessary To Quiet And Compose The Mind In Trials.
