“Lord Of Hosts” – A Title Of God Used Often In The Old Testament. It Emphasizes God’s Dominion Over All Forces (Genesis 2:1; Isaiah 1:9; 45:12).
“Isaiah’s Commission,” lll, Isaiah 6:9) And He Said, Go, And Tell This People, Hear Ye Indeed, But Understand Not; And See Ye Indeed, But Perceive Not. 10) Make The Heart Of This People Fat, And Make Their Ears Heavy, And Shut Their Eyes, Lest They See With Their Eyes, And Hear With Their Ears, And Understand With Their Heart, And Convert, And Be Healed. 11) Then said I, Lord, how long? And He Answered, Until The Cities Be Wasted Without Inhabitant, And The Houses Without Man, And The land Be Utterly Desolate. 12) And The Lord Have Removed Men Far Away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land. Deuteronomy 28:64. 13) But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten (again be laid waste): as a teil (terebinth) tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves (or, is cut down) so The Holy Seed Shall Be The Substance Thereof (Will Be The Stump In The Land).
Quest Study Bible – v9-13, Some ancient translators saw these commands as statements (see NIV text note). The Bible Record Is Clear On Two Things, however: (1) God Had Long Wanted His People’s Affections; (2) Israel consistently spurned Him. It seems that at this juncture, God Was At Long Last Responding In Judgment. Israel had crossed the line; no matter how much they repented, they would still Face The Wrath of God. “Holy Seed … Stump,” v13, In this Symbolic Language lies the heart of Isaiah’s Message: Through God’s Punishment, a small group of people (A Remnant) would return, Purified and Holy. With This Obedient Remnant, God Would Work His Plan Of Redemption. Also see Stump of Jesse (11:1).
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v9, 10, The people were cursed with Spiritual Deadness. Isaiah’s Preaching was destined to make … their ears heavy. Paul quotes this Proclamation to the Jew in Acts 28:26-27 as he turns to minister to the Gentiles. v11, 12, Understandably, Isaiah’s third question to The Lord was how long would the people continue to be unresponsive to his Words of Truth From God. The Answer Was Grim. waste … desolate: These Words Describe The Coming Judgment of God on Judah that would lead to the nation’s captivity under the Babylonians. v13 A tenth is one of Isaiah’s expressions for The “Remnant’; it is only a small percentage of the Israelites. From Israel’s blasted stump, God Would Produce A Holy Seed (11:1).
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v9-13, God Sends Isaiah To Foretell The Ruin Of His People. Many hear The Sound of God’s Word, but do not Feel The Power of It. God Sometimes In Righteous Judgment, gives men up to Blindness of Mind, because they will not Receive The Truth In The Love Of It. But no humble inquirer After Christ, needs to fear this Awful Doom, which is a Spiritual Judgment on those who will still hold fast their sins. Let Everyone Pray For The Enlightening Of The Holy Spirit, that he may perceive How Precious Are The Divine Mercies. by Which Alone We Are Secured Against This Dreadful Danger. Yet The Lord Would Preserve A Remnant, Like The Tenth, Holy To Him. And Blessed Be God, He Still Preserves His Church; however professors or visible churches may be lopped off as Unfruitful, The Holy Seed Will Shoot Forth, From Whom All The Numerous Branches of Righteousness Shall Arise.
