“Woes and Judgments,” cont’d, Isaiah 5:15) And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:  16) But The Lord Of Hosts Shall Be Exalted In Judgment, And God That Is Holy Shall Be Sanctified In Righteousness.  17) Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.  18) Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:  19) That say, let him make speed, and hasten his work, that we may see it, And Let The Counsel Of The Holy One of Israel Draw Nigh And Come, that we may know it!  Jeremiah 17:5; 2 Peter 3:3.  20) Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  21) Woe unto them that are Wise in their own eyes, and Prudent in their own sight!  22) Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:  23) Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away The Righteousness of The Righteous from him (the innocent)!

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v15, 16, the eyes of the lofty:  Proud people get little respect from God (Psalm 147:6).  v17, What were formerly mansions surrounded with lush vineyards would become waste places, where lambs and fat ones, those prepared for sacrifice, feed.  v18, 19, Those who mocked Isaiah’s Proclamation of The Day Of The Lord were not simply “falling,” into sin; rather, they labored to draw iniquity along, as on a cart.  v20, call evil good:  Those who pervert God’s Evaluation Of What Is Good by calling evil good is heading down a Path To Judgment.  v21, At the root of the moral, social, and theological corruption denounced in This Prophecy is being wise in one’s own eyes—an insensitive, arrogant egotism.  v22, mighty at drinking wine:  The intoxicating drink was probably beer (and wine).  v23, bribe:  The perversion of Justice By Bribery is a serious evil that undermines society.

Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v8-23, Here is a Woe to those who set their hearts on the wealth of the world.  Not that it is sinful for those who have a house and a field to purchase another; but the fault is that they never know when they have enough.  Covetousness is idolatry; and while many envy the prosperous, wretched man, The Lord Denounces Awful Woes Upon Him.  How applicable to many among us!  God Has Many Ways To Empty The Most Populace Cities.  Those who set their hearts upon the world, Will Justly Be Disappointed.  Here is Woe to those who dote upon the pleasures and the delights of sense (sensations).  The use of music is lawful; but when it draws away the heart from God, then it becomes a sin to us.  God’s Judgments have seized them, but they will not disturb themselves in their pleasures. The Judgments Are Declared.  Let a man be ever so high, death will bring him low; ever so mean, death will bring him lower.  The Fruit Of These Judgments, Shall Be, That God Will Be Glorified As A God Of Power.  Also, As A God That Is Holy; He Shall Be Owned And Declared To Be So, In The Righteous Punishment of proud men.  Those are in a woeful condition that set up sin, and who exert themselves to gratify their base lusts.  It is in scorn that they call God The Holy One of Israel.  They confound and overthrow distinctions between good and evil.  They prefer their own reasoning’s to Divine Revelations; their own devices To The Councils and Commands Of God.  They deem it prudent and politic to continue profitable sins, and to neglect self-denying duties.  Also, how light men make of drunkenness, It Is A Sin Which Lays Open To The Wrath And Curse Of God.  Their judges perverted Justice.  Every sin needs some other to conceal it.
