Quest Study Bible – “How should we understand Prophetic Visions?” v1, It’s clear that The Book of Isaiah cannot be read like a typical novel. Transitions are lacking, time frames jump dramatically and threads of plot or direction are often severed without warning. Confusion often results. The Book Of Isaiah is primarily a collection of Visions. Although The Words must be regarded as Authentic History, Prophecy and poetry, They must first and foremost be understood as Visions. The problem with understanding Visions is not with the Text, but in our limited understanding of how God Communicated With Prophets: When A Prophet Of The Lord Is Among You, I Reveal Myself To Him In Visions, I Speak To Him In Dreams (Numbers 12:6). Prophets then relayed those Visions to the people. The purpose of a Vision was not straight-line communication. It was to create an Impression Of God upon a person. Prophetic Words, then, primarily carry The Power Of The Message. (For lack of understanding) poetry with its graphic images and exaggeration was often the preferred literary form of the Prophets. The story line was abandoned in favor of more tumultuous (passionate and intense) language. This was certainly true with Isaiah. He was especially concerned with revealing the Paradoxical (Contradicting) Character Of God, Between His Mercy And His Discipline, for example. To communicate such Tensions, Isaiah chose to describe what he saw. “Visions,” v1, cont’d, A Supernatural Revelation, message, or insight communicated through images seen only within a person’s mind or spirit. The pictures seen in a Vision May Illustrate Spiritual Truths or future events.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, God Mediated His Message Through the godly Isaiah to Judah, specifically to their magistrates, priests, and prophets in Jerusalem. The nation of Israel had been divided into two parts: Judah (The Southern Kingdom) and Israel (The Northern Kingdom). The entire nation was heading a path of sin and idolatry that would end in destruction. Thus In This Book, The word Israel sometimes refers to both The Southern and The Northern Kingdoms. Isaiah lived to the nation of Assyria take The Northern Kingdom into captivity in 722 B.C. Therefore this record of Isaiah’s Vision’s contains The Revelation That God Graciously Gave during the reigns of Uzziah (792-740 B.C.), Jotham (752-736 B.C.), Ahaz (736-720 B.C.), and Hezekiah (729-699 B.C.). Because God Never Changes, This Revelation Is Still Relevant For His People Today. v2, God’s Relationship With His People Is Personal; He likens Judah to Ungrateful children (63:8; Exodus 4:22; Hosea 11:1). The Hebrew term translated rebelled means “to refuse to submit to someone’s authority and rule” (63:10; 66:24). v3, Even an ox and a donkey recognize the owner who feeds them, so they do not rebel against him. But Israel, God’s Own children whom He “Nourished and Brought Up” (v. 2), had Rebelled Against Him.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v1-9, Isaiah signifies (or, means), “The Salvation Of The Lord”; a very suitable name for this Prophet, who Prophesies so much of Jesus The Saviour and His Salvation. God’s people did not know or consider that they owed their lives and comforts to God’s Fatherly Care And Kindness. How many are very careless in the affairs of their souls! Not considering what we do know in Religion, does us as much harm, as ignorance of what we should know. The wickedness was universal. Here is a comparison taken from a sick and diseased body. The distemper (a viral disease) threatens to be mortal. From the sole of the foot even to the head; from the meanest peasant to the greatest peer, there is no soundness, no good principle, no Religion, for that is the Health of the soul. Nothing but guilt and corruption, the sad effects of Adam’s Fall. This Passage declares the total depravity of human nature.
