“A Rebellious Nation,” V, Isaiah 1:21) How Is The Faithful City Become An Harlot! It Was Full Of Judgment; Righteousness Lodged In It; But Now Murderers. 22) Thy Silver Is Become Dross, Thy Wine Mixed With Water: 23) Thy Princes Are Rebellious, And Companions Of Thieves: Every One Loveth Gifts, And Followeth After Rewards: They Judge Not the Fatherless, Neither Doth The Cause Of The Widow Come Unto Them. 24) Therefore Saith The Lord, The Lord Of Hosts, The Mighty One Of Isreal, Ah, I Will Ease Me Of Mine Adversaries, And Avenge Me Of Mine Enemies: 25) And I Will Turn My Hand Upon Thee, And Purely Purge Away The Dross, And Take Away All Thy Tin: Revelation 3:19. 26) And I Will Restore Thy Judges As At The First, And Thy Counsellors As At The Beginning: Afterward Thou Shalt Be Called, The City Of Righteousness, The Faithful City. 27) Zion Shall Be Redeemed With Judgment, And Her Converts With Righteousness. 28) And The Destruction Of The Transgressors And Of The Sinners Shall Be Together, And They That Forsake The Lord Shall Be Consumed.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v. 21-24, The debased silver and wine refer to Jerusalem’s unjust rulers. v25, God’s Hand had delivered Jerusalem from Egypt. Now That Same Hand was against the people in Judgment. v26, God’s Goal For Jerusalem was to become a city of Righteousness, a city where The Lord Would Be Faithfully Worshiped. v27, 28, The Hebrew word for Redeemed means “Ransomed” or “Freed someone from another’s ownership through the payment of a price.” Zion’s Penitents, those who turned their backs on idolatry and injustice, would find Freedom from sin and Judgment.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – v21-28, Neither Holy cities nor royal ones are Faithful to their Trust, if Religion does not dwell in them. Dross may shine like silver, and the wine that is mixed with water may still have the color of wine. Those have a great deal to answer for, who do not help the oppressed, but oppress them. God Works Effectively By The Influences Of His Spirit, As A Spirit of Judgment. Sin is the worst captivity, the worst slavery. The Redemption of The Spiritual Zion, By The Righteousness And Death Of Christ And By His Powerful Grace, Most Fully Accord With What Is Here Meant. Utter ruin is threatened.
