“The “Holy Ghost,”  “Holy Spirit” The Doctrine (Beliefs Taught by The Church) of The Holy Spirit, as Part of The Doctrine of The Trinity, is in part at least beyond human comprehension, and we are limited to The Statements of The Scriptures.  The Scriptures Present The Holy Spirit as A Distinct Personality and as part of The Godhead or Trinity (Matthew 3:16-17) and Personal Pronouns are used (John 16:13-14).   His Deity is likewise emphasized by giving to Him Names That Belong To God (Acts 5:3-4) and Divine Attributes are stated as Belonging To Him.  The Work of The Holy Spirit is of The Utmost Importance to men (1 Corinthians 2:11-12).  He is The Immediate Source of Life (Psalm 104:29, 30); He Played An Important part in The Coming of Christ (Luke 1:35); and He is The Revealer of Divine Truth and Thus The Source of The Inspired Scriptures (John 14:26).  This means The Holy Spirit is Active in Conversions (Rebirth) and in The Edification (Spiritual and Moral Improvement) of The Believer by The Word of which He Is The Author (1 Peter 1:19-21).  As Part of This The Holy Spirit Is Said To Dwell In Us.

“Life Through The Spirit,” Romans 8:1) There is therefore now no condemnation (disapproval and punishment) to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, But After The Spirit.  2) For The Law Of The Spirit Of Life In Christ Jesus Hath made me Free From The Law Of Sin And Death.  Corinthians 15:45; 2 Corinthians 3:6.  3) For what The Law could not do, in that It was weak through the flesh, God Sending His Own Son In The Likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin (or, By A Sacrifice for sin), condemned sin in the flesh:  4) That The Righteousness Of The Law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, But After The Spirit.  5) For They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after The Spirit The Things Of The Spirit.  6) For to be carnally (sexual, sensual) minded is death; but to be Spiritually Minded Is Life and Peace.  7) Because the carnal mind (the minding of the flesh) is enmity (hatred) against God:  for it is not subject to The Law Of God, neither indeed can be.   8) So then they that are in the flesh Cannot Please God.  9) But ye are not in the flesh, But In The Spirit, if so be that The Spirit Of God Dwell In you.  Now if any man have not The Spirit Of Christ, he Is None Of His.  John 3:34.  10) And If Christ Be In you, the body is dead because of sin; But The Spirit Is Life Because of Righteousness.  11) But If The Spirit Of Him That Raised Up Jesus From The Dead Dwell In you, He That Raised Up Christ From The Dead Shall Also Quicken (Make Alive) your mortal bodies By His Spirit That Dwelleth In you.  12) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  13) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye Through The Spirit Do Mortify (Deny) the deeds of the body, ye Shall Live.  14) For As Many As Are Led By The Spirit Of God, They Are The Sons Of God.

Quest Study Bible – “Do Spirit-Controlled Christians still sin?” v2-14, Yes, but not while they are controlled by The Spirit.  Having The Spirit Of God within does not always mean Surrendering To His Control.  To use Paul’s language, we can Be In The Spirit, but not (Always) Live According To The Spirit.  We can live in another part of the world, but not live according to its customs, patterns and ways.  The Journey Of Discipleship involves learning how to let The Spirit Have Control.

Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v1, no condemnation:  In Christ, we are no longer under the sentence of The Law, but Empowered By The Spirit To Live For Christ.  v2, The Law Of The Spirit:  The Spirit Refers To The Holy Spirit Who Energizes Our Renewed Spirit.   v3, The Law Could Pronounce Judgment on sin, but The Law could not do anything about sin itself.  It had no power to put sin to death in a person’s life.  God Accomplished What The Law Could Not Do By Sending His Own Son.  Although He Was Tempted, He Never Sinned.  v4, The Purpose Of The Coming Of Christ Was That The Law Might Be Fulfilled.  The Believer gains The Righteous Standard Of The Law–Love (see 13:8-10)–not by means of The Law But Being In Christ And Walking According To The Spirit.  v5, Setting the mind on the things of the flesh or on the things of The Spirit means being oriented to or governed by those things on which we focus.  v6, Peace is the Resolution of the intense warfare described in ch. 7, as well as the inward harmony and tranquility that results in Yielding To God.  v7, The reason that being carnally minded results in death (v. 6) is that the carnal mind is The Enemy Of God.  The mind of the flesh can never submit itself to The Law Of God.  v8, Being in the flesh means being unregenerate or sinful.  People in that state Cannot Please God.  v9, Christians no longer live according to the flesh.  Instead, with The Spirit Living In Them and Empowering them, They Can Live In A Way Pleasing To God.  v10, Dead because of sin refers not to the physical death but to the “body of death” of 7:24.  The problem that Paul is dealing with in this passage is how the “dead” body, in which sin dwells, can be made the vehicle for Expressing The Life Of God.  v11, The Solution to the problem of the flesh is The Holy Spirit.  He Gives Life To Your Mortal Bodies.  Being Spiritually Minded means overcoming the deadness of the body and experiencing Life and Peace.  This is The Resurrection Life (see Philippians 3:10).  v12, 13, you will die:  Death here does not refer to physical death.  It refers to the experience of those that live their lives Apart From Christ.  By The Spirit:  By Walking According To The Spirit (v.4, 6), The Believer can put to death sinful deeds and Live For God.   v14, Being Led By The Spirit is virtually synonymous with Walking According To The Spirit.  “Walking” Highlights The Active Participation and Effort of the Believer.  “Being led” underscores the passive side, The Submissive Dependence of the Believer On The Spirit.
