Judgment – Divine Punishment
“The “Holy Ghost,” “Holy Spirit” – The Doctrine (Beliefs Taught by The Church) of The Holy Spirit, as Part of The Doctrine of The Trinity, is in part at least beyond human comprehension, and we are limited to The Statements of The Scriptures. The Scriptures Present The Holy Spirit as A Distinct Personality and as part of The Godhead or Trinity (Matthew 3:16-17) and Personal Pronouns are used (John 16:13-14). His Deity is likewise emphasized by giving to Him Names That Belong To God (Acts 5:3-4) and Divine Attributes are stated as Belonging To Him. The Work of The Holy Spirit is of The Utmost Importance to men (1 Corinthians 2:11-12). He is The Immediate Source of Life (Psalm 104:29, 30); He Played An Important part in The Coming of Christ (Luke 1:35); and He is The Revealer of Divine Truth and Thus The Source of The Inspired Scriptures (John 14:26). This means The Holy Spirit is Active in Conversions (Rebirth) and in The Edification (Spiritual and Moral Improvement) of The Believer by The Word of which He Is The Author (1 Peter 1:19-21). As Part of This The Holy Spirit Is Said To Dwell In Us.
“The Work Of The Holy Spirit,” John 16:4) But These Things Have I Told You, That When The TIme Shall Come, Ye May Remember That I Told You Of Them. And These Things I Said Not Unto You At The Beginning, Because I Was With You. 5) But Now I Go My Way To Him That Sent Me; And None Of You Asketh me, Whither Goest Thou? 6) But, Because I Have Said These Things Unto You, Sorrow Hath Filled Your Heart. 7) Nevertheless I Tell You The Truth; It Is Expedient For You That I Go Away: For If I Go Not Away, The Comforter Will Not Come Unto You, But If I Depart, I Will Send Him Unto You. Ephesians 4:8. 8) And When He Is Come, He Will Reprove The World Of Sin, And Of Righteousness, And Of Judgment. 9) Of Sin, Because They Believe Not On Me. Acts 2:22; Galatians 3:22. 10) Of Righteousness, Because I Go To My Father, And Ye See Me No More; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Galatians 5:5. 11) Of Judgment, Because the prince Of This World Is Judged.
Quest Study Bible – “Did Jesus forget Peter’s earlier question?” v5, Jesus seemed to overlook Peter’s earlier question, Lord, where are You Going? (see 13:36). Peter worried about their dilemma if Jesus abandoned them, had asked the right question for the wrong reason. Jesus wanted The Disciples to focus on The Direction of His Ministry and Purpose. The preoccupation with themselves kept them from getting to the significant Spiritual Question. “Counselor,” (v. 16, 26) v7, Means One Who is called alongside. It conveys the idea of an Encourager in the sense of a legal counsel. Just As Jesus Had Encouraged And Assisted His Disciples, He Assured Them The Holy Spirit Would Be There For Them As Well. “How does The Counselor convict the world regarding Sin, Righteousness and Judgment?” v8, The Spirit will expose The Sin of Unbelief (v.9). The Spirit Will Also Demonstrate That Christ Alone Is Righteous and all others Fall Short Of God’s Standards (v. 10). Finally, He will show that people that do not Repent and Believe In Christ will share condemnation with Satan (v. 11). “Prince of this world,” (see v.12:31) v11, A title for Satan that suggests the he currently held limited power over the people of this world. Yet, (Jesus), Anticipating His Death and Resurrection, was preparing to dethrone Satan. In the world to come Satan will be powerless and confined under Judgment.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v3, 4, at the beginning: Jesus had been preparing His Disciples to assimilate The Truth (see Proverbs 22:6). In His Wisdom The Lord Never Gives Us More Than We Can Handle. v5, One of you asks Me, “Where are You Going?”: Peter had asked this very question (13:36) and Thomas has suggested it (14:5). However, things were different now. The Disciples had learned about denials, suffering and death. v6, 7, Jesus Explained The Benefits of His Departure. When He Left The Believers Would Have (1) The Provision of The Holy Spirit (vv. 7-15); (2) The potential of Full Joy (vv. 16-24); (3) the possibility of fuller knowledge (vv. 25-28); (4) the privilege of Peace (vv. 29-33). to you: The Holy Spirit would not be given to the world, but to Believers. The Coming of The Spirit would be more profitable to Believers than even The Physical Presence Of Christ, since The Spirit Could Dwell In All Believers At The Same Time. v8, The Holy Spirit Would Demonstrate The Truth Of Christ Beyond The Fear Of Contradiction. The Holy Spirit Convicts unbelievers Through Believers Who Witness About Christ (15:16, 27). Believers Are The Mouth Piece For God’s Voice. The Content of The Witness that The Spirit Reinforces includes Truth about sin, Righteousness and Judgment. v9, of sin: Note the singular sin, not sins. Our witness should not focus on sins (adultery, gluttony, pride, and other sins), But On The Full Payment That Christ Has Made For All Sin. v10, of Righteousness: After Christ’s Departure The Holy Spirit Would Convict The World of The Nature Of Righteousness and The Need For Righteousness. Jesus’ Work On The Cross Was Completely Righteous. This Is Demonstrated By The Father’s Emptying Of The Tomb, Signifying His Satisfaction With The Righteous Payment And His Acceptance Of Christ Into His Presence. v11, of Judgment: The Holy Spirit Would Convince people Of The Judgment To Come. Satan has been judged, so all who side with him will be Judged With Him.
