“The “Holy Ghost,” “Holy Spirit” – The Doctrine (Beliefs Taught by The Church) of The Holy Spirit, as Part of The Doctrine of The Trinity, is in part at least beyond human comprehension, and we are limited to The Statements of The Scriptures. The Scriptures Present The Holy Spirit as A Distinct Personality and as part of The Godhead or Trinity (Matthew 3:16-17) and Personal Pronouns are used (John 16:13-14). His Deity is likewise emphasized by giving to Him Names That Belong To God (Acts 5:3-4) and Divine Attributes are stated as Belonging To Him. The Work of The Holy Spirit is of The Utmost Importance to men (1 Corinthians 2:11-12). He is The Immediate Source of Life (Psalm 104:29, 30); He Played An Important part in The Coming of Christ (Luke 1:35); and He is The Revealer of Divine Truth and Thus The Source of The Inspired Scriptures (John 14:26). This means The Holy Spirit is Active in Conversions (Rebirth) and in The Edification (Spiritual and Moral Improvement) of The Believer by The Word of which He Is The Author (1 Peter 1:19-21). As Part of This The Holy Spirit Is Said To Dwell In Us.
“The Work Of The Holy Spirit,” cont’d, John 16:12) I Have Yet Many Things To Say Unto You, But Ye Cannot Bear Them Now. 13) Howbeit When He, The Spirit Of Truth, Is Come, He Will Guide You Into All Truth: For He Shall Not Speak Of Himself; But Whatsoever He Shall Hear, That Shall He Speak: And He Will Shew You Things To Come. 1 Timothy 4:1. 14) He Shall Glorify Me: For He Shall Receive Of Mine, And Shall Shew It Unto You. 15) All Things That The Father Hath Are Mine: Therefore Said I, That He Shall Take Of Mine, And Shall Shew It Unto You. Colossians 1:19. 16) A Little While, And Ye Shall Not See Me: And Again, A Little While, And Ye Shall See me, Because I Go To The Father.
Quest Study Bible – “Is The Holy Spirit Still Speaking Today?” v13, Jesus Explained That The Holy Spirit Would Expand The Apostles’ Partial Understanding Of Christ’s Life And Mission. This Aspect Of The Spirit’s Ministry was fulfilled primarily in The Writing of The New Testament. That, however, does not prevent The Spirit From Continuing To Enlighten men and women About What Christ’s Life And Death Means. Such Personal Illumination Never Contradicts Or Supersedes The Revelation Of God In His Word.
Nelson’s Compact Bible Commentary – v12, The Holy Spirit’s Ministry To The Apostles Was Threefold: (1) He Would Guide Them Into All Truth (v. 13); (2) He Would Tell Them Of The Future (v. 13); (3) He Would Help Them Glorify Christ (vv. 14, 15). v13, Spirit Of Truth: The Phrase Means That The Holy Spirit Is The Source Of Truth (14:17; 15:26). Guide: The Holy Spirit Would Not Guide Or Carry The Apostles Into Truth. He Would Lead; Their Job Was To Follow. All Truth refers to The Truth necessary to Mature Saints and thoroughly equip servants (see 2 Timothy 3:16, 17). v14, The Holy Spirit Glorifies Christ By Declaring Him Or Making Him Known. It Is The Work Of The Holy Spirit To Throw Light On Jesus Christ, Who Is The Image Of The Invisible God. v15, To Say That The Holy Spirit Will Take What Belongs To Christ (v.14) Does Not Mean He Will Concentrate On Christ To The Exclusion Of The Father. There Is No Division Within The Godhead. What The Father Has, The Son Has (17:10). What The Son Has, The Spirit Will Declare (see 1 Corinthians 2:13). However, The Focus Will Be On Christ Because He Is The “Image Of The Invisible God” (see Colossians 1:15). v16, You Will See Me has been interpreted to mean: (1) The Disciples would literally see Jesus After The Resurrection; (2) The Disciples Would Spiritually See Jesus After The Ascension Because Of The Work Of The Holy Spirit. Verse 22 Seems to support The Literal Sight After The Resurrection.
Matthew Henry’s Concise Bible Commentary – The Coming Of The Spirit Would Be Of Unspeakable Advantage To The Disciples. The Holy Spirit is our Guide, not only to Show Us The Way, But To Go With us By Continued Aids and Influences. To be led into a Truth is more than barely to know It; it is not only to have The Notion Of It in our heads, but The Relish (Great Enjoyment), and Savor (A Taste of Something Good), and Power Of It In Our Hearts. He Shall Teach All Truth, And Keep Back Nothing Profitable, For He Will Show Things To Come. All The Gifts And Graces Of The Spirit, All The Preaching, And All The Writing Of The Apostles, Under The Influence Of The Spirit, All The Tongues and Miracles, Were To Glorify Christ. It behooves everyone to ask, Whether The Holy Spirit Has Begun A Good Work In his heart? Without clear discovery of our guilt and danger, we Never Shall Understand The Value Of Christ’s Salvation, but when brought to know ourselves aright, we Begin To See The Value of The Redeemer. We should have Fuller Views (As Much As Possible) of The Redeemer, And More Lively (More Active) Affections To Him, if we Prayed (More), and Depended On The Holy Spirit. Amen.
